Pixmac / Re: Pixmac merges with Pond5
« on: November 21, 2013, 15:02 »
When I cashed out at pixmac this week, the payment came from Pond5 - so in that sense they are merged.

In terms of the images or sites merging, they're still separate. Sales (for photos) don't seem to be great at either (although I have only a fraction of my stuff at either site - was sort of waiting for something to happen with the merger before doing more uploading, but...)

Thanks for the update  :)

I wanted to give them a go and was wondering whether its better to go thru Pixmac or Pond5 (since I have mostly photos).  But I guess that may be a premature question if the merger is still not fully implemented - and maybe hard to predict how exactly it will go.

Just wondering ... did this merger develop as expected?  Apologies if there's another thread I should be looking at?  ???

It seemed like a nice-ish bit of news - one of the few good ones - thus the curiosity!

Got accepted onto Stockbo... now lets see how it goes.

Congratulations - that's first step done and now to see how the sales will go ...

I've applied with a link to my port as well, as they seem to make a good confidence-building start! :)

How 'bout?  :-\

#14 Business model
You chose a business with low entry barrier, reducing commission structure, excessive market competition, like products available for FREE, and having little voice in the overall business conduct.

My sales are better then ever. Shutterstock has put some nitro in my port. 123 is performing well. Symbiostock is picking up. FAA keeps earning for me.

Great, happy for you!  I dont finding a justifiable increase in line with uploads made since last year.  That suggests a declining trend, good part of which comes from reducing RPDs.  Its like running hard but going nowhere ... or maybe I'm on the 'wall' (as I read on another post).

General Stock Discussion / Winter of our discontent
« on: September 11, 2013, 02:16 »
Winter is still some months away, but stock sales are falling like snowflakes, with falling RPDs or sales across multiple sites.

What does one do?

a.  Keep griping and keep uploading - business as usual !  ;)
b. Go exclusive to one agency of choice
c. Be non-exclusive and upload to as many agencies as physically possible to spread income effect
d. Say hasta la vista to microstock and commit effort elsewhere to substitute the income
e. Go independent such as own site or Symbiostock

The best option from the above .. or smthg else...?

General Stock Discussion / Re: August Sales
« on: September 01, 2013, 09:24 »
Going back to August sales ...  ;)

SS marginally over august 2012
DT slipped under aug 12 but they got me 2 BMEs in last 4 months so cant complain abt occasional dips
PD gradually growing trend and up in line with uploads
IS fallen off - I have deactivated fair amount of content as well
FT cant find growth compared to uploads done - RPD declines ...
123RF - also slower and I think the rate changes hurt and continues to..
Canstock - saved by one better value sale otherwise a disaster
Veer - very low, almost negligible sales
Bigstock - increased up a little - but the sale volume in no way justifies the very low sub rate
Alamy - nothing

Overall, and in relation to the uploads done during past year (fair comparison basis), august 2013 continued the trend of not producing reasonable returns.

In good part and in my opinion, the problem lies with most/ many agencies now offering ridiculously low sub rates WITHOUT generating enough sales volume to satisfy contributor efforts in portfolio building (SS is one clear exception for me because they do much better volume).

And on the third hand, there are very few, if any, of the other micros that I'd be totally happy about getting into bed with. Devil and deep blue sea. Rock and hard place.

And here's one statement I couldn't agree more with!  Especially when looking at the dismal sub rates to which so many - maybe all - stock agencies and sales volumes have progressively shifted.   Barring 1 or 2 agencies, such as SS perhaps, there seems to be no real contributor care in the overall business actions of  most stock agencies.   So .. go as exclusive as you want with any agency that takes your fancy - it may not really matter in the long run.  And you can always revert that decision if it doesn't work for you. ::)

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia - Poor Sales
« on: August 28, 2013, 08:49 »
Also experiencing pretty low sales this month/ recent weeks - and the ones coming thru mostly sub or XS at miserably low returns!   Funny how the subs even at xl and xxl sizes yield the same low revenue - that should really be changed across the board  >:(

This looks like a good deal and I want to say a big Thumbs Up to SS ...

(Quote)
Images used in ads will be limited to digital sizes often appearing as thumbnails and unlike .. standard royalty-free license, use of the images is limited to Facebook. The images themselves are never downloaded by customers theyre incorporated into ads via the Facebook interface. Ads can be targeted based on likes or based on viewer demographic data such as age, gender and other factors. Facebook users have control over which ads they see.
(Unquote)

Time will show how this bears out but it clearly appears to be synergistic sales activity - FB is prime social media with lots of users and advertisers - and contributor interest seems to have been kept in mind.  SS core model is subscription based and this is positively aligned, so cant complain there.

Cheers SS!   :)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Shall We Say Goodbye?
« on: August 16, 2013, 20:52 »
My crystal ball says ...

Short term ( 2- 3 years) - more penny pinching stuff, more of the same we have now with supply running way ahead of demand.  Contributors struggle on / no real returns/ little voice in the business.

Medium term (5 − 7 years) - Micro rates potentially falling so low that a large, high volume site or two giving away free images to users and making their money from ad revenues.  Alongside that emergence of a new order with high quality concept images and specific theme images (including industrial, etc) at higher, macro type rates.  Sharp drop off in contributor numbers for microstock content.

Longterm (10 + years) - there's no long term in the internet age :)  Who knows what might happen!

Anyhow, I doubt that microstock is worthwhile for either new contributors or existing contributors without large, well established portfolios  to waste time/ effort in the current environment. Just my take.

So do fotolia and canstock. Just ask support. However, many companies offer free online storage e.g. dropbox.

Which companies?

Yes, whatever happened to sales?  There used to be those nice $ 35 downloads once in a while that seem to have disappeared lately (at least on my port).. one hopes they come back  :(

Wondering what the experience is like? Any guidance much appreciated.

To get images taken in decent light AND  edited in Lightroom 4 to be rejected on the basis of poor lighting is quite ridiculous.

ROFL, that statement is quite ridiculous. It's the camera and Lightroom that make the image, huh?!  Reminds me of that cartoon where the bird says to the photographer bird, "Your camera takes nice pictures" and the photographer bird says, "Your mouth makes really nice compliments."

LOL, good one!  Reminds me of something that Eve Arnold said .. It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument .. read here fascinating post

Does someone know how long does it take for GL to payout after you request it?  With over 800 images online (I stopped uploading after that due to some - in my opinion - strange rejections I was getting from them) - I managed to reach payout in (roughly) a year or so.  Not too much selling going on there, is it?  Anyhow, requested payout couple days back and am wondering how long before that happens...  :)

General Stock Discussion / Brilliant move?
« on: August 10, 2013, 10:42 »
Lets sits back and appreciate some (at least one) brilliant move in the microstock world.

So lets imagine I'm a stock agency ( its imagination only - and I'M NOT a stock agency) facing
stifling competition.   And then there's new stock agencies arriving in the market pushing rates
down - including at least one that's cash rich and offers lower rates for the same or very
similar content.  My business is pressured more and more.

The contributors are a mass-less, shapeless and generally dispensible commodity - of no account
really because for each one that leaves there's ten more arriving in queue - with same or very similar
content.

I know that I can drop contributor share or overall rates and there's no significant long-term
repercussion from the Contributors side that I need bother about.

So then I make a brilliant move.

I give away a whole bunch of images for free distribution.

So what happens -

1. Contributors lose money (who cares!).  In fact I reduce their share further while the going is good.

2.  All exisiting stock agencies start to lose market share.  The stronger 3 or 4 will likely ride it out. But
the smaller/ weaker/ newer agencies who are on the threshhold of survival will likely go under or get further
marginalized.  Leaving the marketplace open again for the few bigger/ stronger players - like me.

3.  Then, when all the fallout has taken place two things have happened.  Contributor shares have been
further reduced.  The weaker agencies have become even less significant. Leaving the market open for
strong players like me.

Then I can take profit and rake it in - over months and years - till the marketplace changes again -
and I come up with some other new, smart strategy.

Applaud.

197
And then (taking an Outside In approach), there is the question of how the world at large, or at least our immediate community, "see" us.  Hugely relevant in my opinion because otherwise whatever we call ourselves is in our own vacuum  ;)

General Stock Discussion / Re: July Earnings
« on: August 02, 2013, 12:45 »
Flat as a pancake despite few hundred uploads to various sites in past year.  The new uploads, and new income effectively countered by drop in royalty rates by so many sites!  SS hung in just about to July last year, ok on FT and PD, lacklustre performances on 123rf, Bigstock, poor on Canstock, DISMAL alamy over past two months - dont feel like uploading there anymore unless smthng changes there quickly - however DT came in with a BME recouping a good deal of the month.  IS low but I have removed a fair bit of content there.  GL continues with non-existent sales.

General Stock Discussion / Re: I Think I'm Done
« on: July 23, 2013, 15:48 »
The past being the best indicator of the future - and history having a tendency to repeat itself.. and so on..

We should all just keep shooting and contributing, shouldn't we  ;)

Keep shootin for the LOVE of photography just as we did before - followed by keywording - loading - taking rejections with a grin - and shooting some more..

And the agencies should also go on just as they did before - squeezing commissions, squeezing some more and then some - and keeping an ever larger chunk of the sales for all the hard work (and hard squeezing) done.

And history shall keep repeating itself, till one fine day every next stock agency will have a trillion and a half stock images of the handsome businessman shaking hands etc - and then perhaps this stock model will die a quiet death - with no more contributors - and trillions of stock images already uploaded chasing and badgering the buyers to buy buy buy .. or well, just take it for free.

Lousy month.. sales down almost 8% from June last year with about 800 or so images added in year.  One doesn't need a crystal bowl anymore to see where microstock is headed .. (hoping to be wrong - the perennial optimist!
