Stocksy / Re: Stocksy's call to artist
« on: May 07, 2014, 09:22 »

Anyone who thinks that VSCO grid is primarily about effects is utterly missing the point. It's about the content. It's about what people actually post.

How people choose to process is like talking about what film someone used or what they did in the darkroom. It's interesting - but only in the same way as it always was. For years many photographers, their look, was in many ways partly defined by what camera and film they used or the processing. But serious people did not go on and on about that as if was the only thing.

Spot on

I don't think it's a trade secret who to get the 'instagram effect' or vsco as it is also termed. You only have to Google the question and there are tons of links, blogs and Youtube videos on how to do it.

Here's one of very many:

Yes, it's not a trade secret. I even have VSCO plug-in. It's weird that I like the affect of the filters on other people's photos but not on mine  ;D

until this minute hadn't heard of vsco grid

I spend hours and hours browsing vsco grid. IMO it has almost nothing in common with instagram.

I like vsco grid in the same ways as I liked the Sally Eauclaire book when it first came out in the early 80s. It's that good.

Correct observation for VSCO. As for instagram, I don't look at their explore. Check out those popular instragrammers such as Michael O'Neil, Chris Ozer, Tim Landis and so on. Their work are outstanding.

I did see those links. They are beautiful portfolios but i could see why they aren't accepted. Being an avid instragram & vsco grid follower and a fan of contemporary lifestyle magazines, I 'get' Stocksy's style. While i appreciate their taste, I'm struggling in editing photos to match their instagrami-ish, retro, matte and muted style. I'm more inclined toward natural tones in Offset and shiny perfect photos in microstock.

To search for images, I need sign up for an account which required credit card.

Well, while I wasn't lucky with previous application, but I still like the fact that Stocksy control the influx tightly.

Thank you! Great news. I have enough time getting ready and start applying filters on my portfolio.

Walking away from Getty or iStock Exclusive is like leaving a wealthy, but abusive, manipulative and controlling spouse. Some continue to stay for financial security, some choose to be free, albeit poorer.

It has been a while, but Stocksy's call to artists is still not opened. Any insider info when are they gonna open the door again?
Well, looking at my portfolio I'm not hopeful. But I'm in need for some kind of excitement.

you have beautiful site and beautiful content. What's a great idea to have photo library just for babies!

I have terminated my contract with Getty and have a bunch of RM images sitting around and still not sure what to do with them. I'm not motivated to upload to Alamy. Any recommendation which RM agency I can consider?
As most of my models are Asian, I'm looking at Blend Images. But I don't have 1000 images to qualify for their 50% royalty rate so I have to be content with 20%. Also, anyone has any idea what are they royalty rates like through their partner program? As an example, if an image licensed through Getty as partner, does that mean Getty will be paying them 30% and 20% of this amount will go to the photographer?

onepointfour, perhaps you can give Inmagine a try - http://submission.inmagine.com/ .  You get 50% when your image gets sold and paid for.  Besides, it is a non-exclusive contract.  However, my advice, don't submit the same images that are on your microstock portfolios to them.  High possibility that your images will get rejected, as it did with mine.  Other than that, they seem pretty fine.  If you are interested, just give them a try  :)

Thanks eDelaney. I juct check them out and my first impression is they seem to favour people on white background and images that are shot and staged purposely for stock. I'm afraid I don't have a lot of those.

What are actually criteria to get in? Sometimes looking at some RM stuff  I got the feeling it was a closed club you can only get if you know somebody. Microstock with its craze rejections and large volume of uploads created much better collections.

I was browsing in Offset collection and stumbled on this shot http://www.offset.com/photos/61270.

Since most of my issues with SS is focus, it makes me wonder if the images in Offset need to go through the same reviewing process.
Don't get me wrong, I don't intend to bash Offset or the photographer. In fact I have high admiration for this photographer and have been following their works for years now.
For 500 dollar thats called art.

Shocking, but thats how it is these days. The work on SS is of a much higher quality than offset, yet it gets sold for pennies. Submit horribly out of focus shots to Offset and they charge 500 dollar.

I could be wrong. But what's obvious to me is the majority of the Offset contributors are assignment photographers who have shot big campaigns and are not known in stock photographer. I do recognize a couple of contributors who are also stock shooters. So I assume Offset offers very limited place for stock shooters and small-time photographers. Also, what I noticed many of the lifestyle, interior and food photos are styled by professional props and food stylist. So, I don't see any glimpse of hope how to get into this club unless I move out from where I live because the only assignment a photographer can make a living here is wedding photography which I hate, and there is hardly professional stylist in my area.

While I think it's a brilliant move by SS to have these group of photographers as contributors, I'm wondering, how are they going to compete with Getty in building a comprehensive library. I don't see how these elite photographers will be able to contribute local cultural content that specific to certain region except for some touristy shots. Just search Lunar/Chinese New Year which is a big celebration in Asia, it's almost non existent in Offset. I hope Offset will welcome more small-time photographers while still maintain strict curation of the collection.

Hello,

Sorry for the confusion - that image looks like an upload error (the wrong file in a single edit being uploaded or approved) and has been removed.

Best,

Scott

Scott,

Glad to know that it was an error. My admiration has been restored.

I submitted 11 images this week, 9 older images at 4MP, shot with a 450D+cheap kit lens 18-55mm, and 2 images at 10MP shot with a 450D+24-70L II. Some of the 4mp images were soft, I expected them to get some rejections, the 10mp images were sharp. The downsized images all got accepted and the 2 sharp images got rejected for focus. Go figure.

Same here. I only got a couple files accepted which were shot by using my super old camera in smallish jpeg files. None of the large files shot by my spanky new camera got accepted. Mind you, the rejected images were even shot using tripod and wireless trigger.

none because in one way or another they all sub-licence to Getty and Getty is still nr.1 for RM.
i'm afraid you just shot yourself in the foot.

you can make some sales at Alamy, AGE, and the others, but it will be a pain in the as-s to reupload and rekeyword and their sales are no big deal compared to Getty.

I do miss the occasional RM sales there except the Premium Access. I don't regret leaving them because I really hate the way they treat the contributors there. It was a difficult decision but it's liberating to finally end the dysfunctional relationship with them. My focus will be more on microstock now and I'm looking for places for a small collection of my RM photos that I dont intend to offer them as RF.

I can't recommend an agency because I'd guess it depends on your location and the kind of images you shoot. There are too many different agencies, all with their own approach.

With regards to distribution: Yes, you get whatever your share is (40%? 50%?) from what your agency receives from distribution partners. If Getty is one of the distribution partners, you might end up getting 50% of 30%... or... none of those numbers are a given. I believe distribution agencies receive a bit more from Getty and Corbis than direct photographers get. Reasonable because they already do the editing and keywording etc. But it depends on the specific contract the agency has.

But then again, if you upload images to Getty, you might see them on Corbis as well. So in the end, you might be getting 30% of 50% of what the customer paid. It's very confusing and very intransparent. In the end, you just have to trust the agency you choose to distribute your images as good as they can.

Thanks so much Michael. Appreciate your input.

I don't mind changing some of RM photos to RF. There are some photos that I will never let go as RF. I don't mind if it's not selling at all. At worst, I will save it indefinitely for photo competition or for Image Brief. This is purely an example - a photo of a newborn identical twins with his great grandpa and his (identical) twin. No, I will not sell it at 0.25 cent. Call me naive or foolish, but I have been lucky with a couple of huge RM sales to continue believing that there are places for these type of images.

Well, I always keep work that can't be replicated easily as RM. I don't mean my works is out of this world until it can't be replicated, but it takes a lot more effort to be replicated. The rest go to my RF bin.
From my previous experience with RM licensing, another thing I noticed that the company that purchased want to make sure the same photo is not being used by their competitor.

It wouldn't be any different than a picture in a frame.  You'd need a PR.

Sean, I assume you are responding to my earlier question.

But what if we use fabric as backdrop? I know I will need a PR using the framed photo analogy. But what about those printed fabric worn by model?

Sorry for I know this is slightly off topic, I could start a new thread.

Now this make me worry. I bought vinyl backdrops for my photography. After some inspection, I think the texture and pattern printed on the vinyl are stock images. I assume the well known seller probably bought extended right for resell. Can I submit the photos taken with this backdrops to be sold as stock photos? Do I need a release or need to buy extended license from the artist too?
