iStockPhoto.com / Re: August best match shift?
« on: September 02, 2011, 01:41 »
So many editorial in the first page. Edstock almost everywhere.

My 2 cents is

1) if photography is your (serious) hobby but not primary job and you think that you can create images which could make to Vetta or Agency collections, be exclusive. You'll earn more from higher % and also Vetta money coming from Getty Site will be good. But if photography is your job and you do it 24/7 you can be independent. Myself I am in the first category and I can say that I am happy.

2) PP sucks. There is no guarantee that they can place or withdraw your images to/from on time. Furthermore with the new image search capability of Google, if I was a customer I would always searched for the photo I liked in IS. Maybe it pops up in Thinkstock. If yes I would pay less and the contributor loses money. So, I wouldn't bother PP.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I am not planning to abuse any good intention, whatsoever. In the end I will explain these people as much as I can. I have local guide with me as well. In the end there is an editorial option too.

Hello folks,

I am off to a 4 week trip to Indonesia in short time. I will be mostly travelling in less famous places and a lot among the local people. That's very nice for photography of course. Next to editorial (I submit in IS) I would like to also make some shots of local people posing actually.

Does anybody have some experience here? How do you approach people and explain them the logic of a model release especially in remote and authentic locations?

Do you also know if we have to make a picture of the ID all the time? Or can they just hold a filled in MR and I photograph the the person holding the MR?

Any comment is welcome :)

(...) - BME for dls and $$, and almost reaching last June's dls, then suddenly after last Thursday, which was my BDY for dls, CRASH on Friday, and it's been dire since. Right back to Jan-Apr sales figures.
(...)

That's exactly my situation. Up to friday last week the sales were great and from that day on it just dried up. So I guess it's a best match tweak.

I gave up on istock for video.  The upload often went wrong, sales were low and 15% commission is horrible.  Pond5 do everything better for me and pay 50% commission.

I have been hearing this from other people as well. Have you tried being exclusive there?

My plan was actually starting as exclusive and build up the portfolio as quickly as possible. After a while, let's say 6 months or a year, become independent. I guess IS will accept editorial videos as well in the future. That can make things more interesting.

Just started using Nikon D7000. Up to now no problems.

OK man, I have figured it out know. Thanks!  ;)

iStockPhoto.com / istockvideo - how many files to upload?
« on: June 22, 2011, 07:59 »
Hello peeps,

I have been trying to upload my first video files to istock however I am getting the error *Enter and upload files before proceding* So I thought that I had to upload also PAL and NTSC versions of the same clip so I converted the original HD file to PAL and NTSC and tried to upload but I got the same error.

Anybody knows what is going wrong here? And do I need to upload other versions than HD as well every time or uploading the HD is sufficient and IS converts the HD to other file formats internally?

I am using Nikon D7000. Any help will be appreciated very much!

regards
J.

I'm too new at this to have comparisons to previous years, but my DL trend has been odd nevertheless.  1, maybe two DL's on any given day, with a handful of zeros is typical and to be expected with just under 100 photos online.  Slow start to April - no DL's until on on the 4th, so imagine my surprise to find SIX DL's on Tuesday.  Back to zeros until a few DL's today.  I attribute it to whatever is happening with the search and best match changes.

Same here. April began terrible. No DL's for days. Suddenly 11 downloads on thursday. Friday only 1 download. Why are they playing with best match? Just leave it there.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Yuri new studio..!

Great video, thank you for sharing.

All that antique outlook of the studio and the classical furniture reminded me of Vetta collection of Istock. Am I right if I say 'Yuri will start shooting Vetta-style images' ?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Amazing waste of reviewing time!
« on: February 08, 2011, 07:27 »
I had a similar problem last year and found a solution. I upload the images with minimum keywords which is 5 I think. These are Photography, Nobody/People, Horizontal/Vertical, Color Image/Black and White, Outdoors/Indoors. I don't bother with other "risky" keyword during the upload. Once they are accepted I fill in all the blanks. Worked always uintil now.

You other guys who had just one photo nicked - was it your best seller?
Mine are from 12/22 and 12/23. 3 images stolen, one a good seller with above 30 DLs in half year.

64
I have 3 fraud downloads. I consider myself lucky. Some people lost lots of money, some lots of images. Think about stolen Vetta's..

IMHO IS has screwed up again. They are not even in a position to distinguish between a fake/stolen credit card and a safe one.

Mr. Arcurs, can you have some holiday or take some time off, so that we can also sell some pictures? :)

You definitely deserved it in the end.

It's just me or view and vote process via Stockys site is a pain experience?

In fact, entire site is useless.

The voting site seems really amateur. Most of the shortlisted people are not new guys but heavy contributors (gold & diamond, etc.) who really need the 2000 bucks, I guess.

I just wonder who liked this image so much that it became Vetta
[snip]
It was uploaded on 1st Nov so can't have been up for more than a couple of weeks and has sold three times. Seems pretty good.
It probably needed a PR, which could be hard to get, so Vetta for rarity value(?)

I was more thinking about cutting the blade edges and lamp on the ceiling. So it's not the best composition and lighting is also not very good. And I don't think it's a rare image on the other hand.

I am a bit frustrated with Vetta selections lately. Trying some soft light, artistic shots but none of them has been accepted to Vetta :(

Tried following the iStock examples and it looks like they may have pulled one of each of pairs. I guess that is an improvement.

The idea of Vetta is just a group of images that someone liked. You pay extra for having them sort through the mass, not because the images are 5x better...

For reasons I can guess at, there appear to be a lot of the newbies who qualify at 250 downloads who are becoming exclusive - even after the September bombshell. Initially, I'd have expected that no one would become exclusive who wasn't already. However...

If you look at it from their perspective though (especially if they haven't been uploading elsewhere) it's a way to get a guaranteed 25% next year regardless of sales this year. They're looking at a raise and thus aren't p#$sed off.

The number of such exclusives are relatively much higher than their portfolio or sales (with respect to total collection or total sales). I think this is where the bulk of the additions comes from.
......

I totally agree with this. I am a relative newbie, started uploading in january this year and turned exclusive in past october. For me 25% instead of 15% is very good since I can not upload in other sites, because I don't have the time. I am not a full-time photographer. I like photography and financing this hobby of mind through stock is a huge opportunity for me. I can further invest in gear and try different things which would be Vetta-like shots. So I guess there are other people like me who thinks similar and turning exclusive.

On the other hand I totally understand the frustration on higher levels, gold and diamond canisters. IS/Getty has literally deceived these people IMHO.

Partner Program.. Once you're in you will never (or after some real hard days and nights) get out..

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Contact HQ via phone. How?
« on: November 08, 2010, 16:37 »
I used skype twice and both worked very well. No problems calling from the Netherlands.

74
I had made a list of files still present in partner sites. When they have replied my initial ticket I had sent them the list of image numbers. Today I have seen that the images are disappearing in other sites. After sending the list it took 4-5 days.

75
My images are also in photos.com and TS although I have opted them out 2 months back.

Am I right with the thinking that I may be losing more DLs/income since my images are available in partner sites? I recently (since 3 weeks) became exclusive and although I had a very good month the DL numbers are minimally above the numbers of base contribution period. I am a bit disappointed.
