Symbiostock - General / Re: PayPal Digital Goods
« on: July 08, 2013, 07:40 »
A DG transaction is never eligible for seller protection. There is no physical product, hence no tracking number. When there is a spoof case or unauthorized transaction or chargeback, you will always lose the case, if its SNAD or NR case you will get to keep the money.

Thanks Ron. Seems odd that Paypal's terms for DGs are not as advantageous as their standard terms. Commissions seem comparable.

Is there an upside?

I did a test transaction this morning and the Paypal emails contained the stuff about being "eligible for Seller Protection" and postal requirements.

Is it worth using the PayPal Digital Goods facility so that these aren't an issue? Are there any other benefits or downsides?

What are the panel's thoughts?

You are not the only one new to css and php, the first time I was advised to change something in the child them I thought "what, how, where" then found the child them only to discover there was nothing in it to change which confused me even more.  Eventually I got there though using Firebug and the edit thingy in Chrome.  Usually have Chrome open to try and find the bits I want to edit and find it easier and more responsive than Firefox's Firebug

Thanks for the heads up, C.

Sorry people, it's my fault.

I closed my iS port a couple of weeks back and they have to send me my closing balance.

Site: http://stockphotology.com
Host: www.justhost.com
Results: A mixed bag - seems to be working now.
Info: Justhost Customer Support is not all that. Ended up sorting things out myself after setting up a new subdomain and redirecting nameservers from another domain name registrar with a bit of Googling and reading fora. This was after Justhost told me it couldn't be done. Also, speed seems a bit slow (but I'm on a shared subscription) and I've already had two complete outages.

I didn't answer the poll as my experience was somewhere between easy and hard. I got on board with SY quite late and I think that searching for answers has become increasingly difficult because of the the rapidly increasing mine of information on bugs and workarounds and also the rapid increase in SY's functionality (which of course is to be applauded).

For those of us who have never interacted with CSS, I think that site setup is more difficult. For instance, I'll search for an answer to a problem and I'll find, "Yeah just copy and paste this code snippet after #*/php>" and I'm thinking "You what? I can't find anything remotely similar to #*/php> Where is it? Which page? How do I open the CSS to edit it? Child or parent theme? Or do I use phpadmin?". You get the picture.

This isn't a criticism of course, and it's no-one else's problem that I've never worked with CSS and WP. But looking for answers, whether in SY's excellent resources or elsewhere, does add considerably to the time taken to get the site working and looking good. In fact, I've put off any site customisation for now, for exactly this reason.

Doing this is fun though.

That's great Ron. Delighted for you.

...aaaaannnnd I'm back in the game.

2.5.5 solved the search and categories issues.

Sterling work Leo and the team. Thanks.

108
Found 2.5.5. As you were.

Thanks Ron. I've made a few changes based on that and I'll see what happens when I upload again this week.

Just reset your filters.

Just set your content filter to red in your network area. You've probably set some of your content as yellow and red during creation process.

Done that and it's still the same.

I'll try again later just in case it takes a while to propagate the filter changes.

Now, how do I update to 2.5.5 as suggested by Steve? It's not coming up on my Dashboard and I can't find it on your (i.e. Leo's) update page.

111
imagenomad - just noticed you're still on v 2.4.9 - there were definitely some bugs related to images and searches that got fixed after that, so anyone who's having a roblem with search  needs to get to 2.5.5 to see if the problem's already been fixed.

no one's reported any problems with search in 2.5.5

Oh, OK. Thanks. I haven't had any update prompts on my Dashboard though. Should I have?

112
Ok, I just read you need to update public info on the symbiostock section of WP. Tick the box and click save

Yup, already done. And repeated. And there's no change. Still no hits with the Search box and not all images showing in Image Categories.

113
Go to Network page, check "Update public image info" and Save. Then count your orangutans again :)

Thanks but I'd already done that. I've also turned off WP-Super-Cache.

I've done the "Update public image info" on the Network page again though, just in case, and it's exactly the same.

114
Make sure the image is published, I had a few images that were published and then unpublished, they had categories assigned to them but they didnt show up in the categories.

Thanks Ron but all of my images are Published.

Finding images on my site (Stockphotology) is made difficult on two fronts -

If I search for images using the search box on my site, I get hits from other Symbio sites but none, zip, nada from my own unless my site is the only one with images with that keyword.

So for example, searching using "bubble" gets a number of hits across SY but not on mine despite me having a number of "bubble" images.

On the other hand, searching for "orangutan" gets most of my orangutan images but not all of them - "Results" is the correct number (23) but only 20 images are shown with no "next page".

Also, if I try to find my images via "Image Categories", the number of "Results" is again correct but now a half of the images or even less are shown, even if the Category contains a few pages worth of images.

Any thoughts?

Is there a box I haven't ticked that I should or a box that I have ticked that I shouldn't?

PS - I've added the "Search" problem to Ron's thread.

116
+1

If I search for images on my site in the search box, I get hits from other Symbio sites but none, zip, nada from my own unless my site is the only one with images with that keyword (e.g. in my case, orangutan).

I've also started a new topic regarding "Image Categories" not returning all of my images.

In other words, any visitors to my site will not be able to find my images on two fronts.

Sorry for the delayed update on this. I've had some downtime and outages on JustHost  ::)

Anyway, the long and the short of it is that even writing just to XMP still results in two captions if inverted commas/quotemarks are in the caption or title.

So curiosity satisfied and yes, it was a fool's errand in the end.

Great resource. This network just gets better and better.

119
the reason this happens is that it takes info from 2 different pieces of meta data -- I made tiny change in my exif data after  I got a dupe. the result in the image as processed was:

Ski lift carries skiers to the high alpine mountains2
Ski lift carries skiers to the high alpine mountains 1

the first is from xmp-description, the second from iptc caption-abstract.. so it looks like a logic problem somewhere -- it tries to find a desc, thinks it has failed, and looks in an alternative place.  normally, once it finds one, it doesn't  collect the other...  several agencies have similar bugs they wont admit to.  in their cases I get NO desc when the info is there (I finally fixed the problem by always supplying both)

why this only happens sometimes, I can 't guess, but it not that unusual - and now, I only do one thing at a time -- upload, then process, then edit,.

Interesting. I use Photo Mechanic to add metadata on ingestion and then again with more specific captioning and keywords before I export files for upload. At the moment, in my PM Prefs, the box is checked to write both XMP and IPTC into all files, whether TIFF, JPEG or native raw.

Would it be worth changing my PM prefs to write to XMP only (given that PM won't write to IPTC only - it always writes to XMP whether it's to the file or a sidecar?

And of course, there's a corollary - do other contribs using other DAM workflows have similar issues with their software writing a mixture of IPTC and XMP?

Thanks for the responses guys. And Tinny, yes, I agree - it seems to only happen with quote marks.

the only reason I had 2 different captions was because I purposely changed them to confirm my suspicion that symbio was taking meta data from 2 diff places.  i'm guessing the normal is to take xmp desc, then find another one if that is blank, but somehow that's not working in thiscase.

I know that ms photo pr tools uses the xmp rather than iptc for title.

normally I use exiftool gui to add iptc info, then copy that into xmp, a 1 step process.  I haven't had any problems with agencies doing that.  the symbio duplication doesn't happen every time -- when it does all the images in that batch have dupes.

the various ms agencies also use a variety of combinations of iptc and xmp data but I haven't gotten any response from any of them when I asked which fields they're using - would make it a lot simpler for everyone.

Thanks Steve. To satisfy my own curiosity, and recognizing that it's probably a fool's errand, I'll change the Prefs in PM so that it only writes to XMP anyway and I'll report anything significant here. I'll do it for my next ingest so it's not contaminated with images up to now.

EDIT: Why wait? I'll do it with a batch of test images later.

Does anyone else get this?

Upload image batch with IPTC data populated including title, caption, keywords, MR, PR, copyright and contact info.

Process to drafts to edit, do SEO and change MR and PR to N/A (IPTC isn't recognised for releases it seems).

But now I seem to get duplication of captions and occasionally titles. I haven't established a pattern but I wonder if it's captions and titles that contain quote marks.

I'm off to photograph some Puffins (hopefully with their beaks stuffed with sand eels) in the middle of the North Sea now so I'll check back in later. But if anyone has any ideas...

Group Hug!!!!   :)   :)

I have to say that I am amazed and impressed with where we are.  I wish I was a coder instead of a photographer so I cold jump in and get my hands dirty...

I know what you mean.

I've already browsed Amazon for books on WP and CSS and I've already downloaded a few older free ones for my Kindle apps. I'm actually really enjoying sorting out site problems, learning as I go.

I know this is a bit gushy but it is a great feeling to be involved in this. I haven't felt this positive about something for a long time.

Even the brown trousers moments, of which I've had quite a few, end up being fun.

123

That makes all the difference, if it is Vogon engineering it is definitely required - we need to see where we are going and where we have been - and check to see what everyone else is up to as well :)

That's poetry, that is. Vogon poetry mind, but still...

 ;)

Right, I'm live and will be adding more images this weekend.

Of all those deserving of thanks Leo, and there are many, top of the list is you mate.

Blimmin' awesome.

And if it is a freight train coming frame-fillingly toward us, it'll be a heck of a shot. :P
