Symbiostock - Hosting / Re: Email oddities
« on: July 18, 2013, 00:46 »
Another network member has confirmed that an email originating from my site arrives with a spammy-looking, not to mention wrong, *****@*****.justhost.com address.

Bah.  :o  >:(

What I meant was that the emails to the customer are a real address while mails to us are the justhost one, so it is only us (site owners) who get them like that

Yes but the site can't differentiate another customer from me if I use one of my spare emails that are nothing to do with Stockphotology or JustHost when I register a testing account. And my dummy registrations with completely separate emails get the ****@justhost**** address.

So it looks like any new registration is going to get an email like that and i guess sales confirmation emails too.

It doesn't seem to work like that though, Tinny - the subdomain***@justhost*** email address is how it arrives in my Inbox when I use different email addresses to register.

Any email originating from my Symbio site ends up like this including notifications for comment moderation and new registrations as well us the network update email. Emails sent directly by me using a client or webmail are OK.

Symbiostock - Hosting / Email oddities

Hi gang

Apologies for the lengthy explanation but there's a problem I'd like to iron out.

My setup is this -

My Symbio domain name is registered with a UK registrar.

My Symbio site is hosted on a subdomain of my JustHost TLD and my Symbio domain name points to this. I simply changed the nameservers where my domain name is registered as per the JustHost Knowledgebase.

Nothing (at the moment) is installed in my TLD at JustHost.

To begin with, I set up the mailservers to be on JustHost but I couldn't get it to play nice with mail clients on my Macs, iPad or iPhone and when I did dummy registrations to test this setup, I rarely received the email. I did get the daily update emails from Symbio though and Webmail through JustHost seemed to work.

Because of this, I changed the DNS mailservers in JustHost to point back to the mailservers where my Domain name is registered and set up a mailbox there.

Now, emails are much quicker and if I do a direct email using a client or webmail, everything's good and looks as it should. But now checking with a dummy registration, emails that are sent via Symbio arrive with the address that reads as part_of_my_subdomain_name_at_justhost_mailservers. This only happens if emails originate in my Symbio site, whether registering or getting the update email. Needless to say, it doesn't look very professional.

Am I missing a setting somewhere?

Thanks,

Russell

Just out of interest is there anyone out there considering Symbiostock but is holding back?

If you are hesitant - what would persuade you to start using Symbiostock?

It sounds interesting, but I'm still a little unclear on why I should use it.  ???

It's pretty sweet getting 100% royalties.

And no rejections for spurious, unfathomable reasons.

OK, removed the need for a login, enabled comments and just posted a freshly minted entry.

You can use quotes from SymbioGuides if any of it is helpful, in a couple cases there I am quoting from WordPress documentation or from the forums but I've marked it as a quote where that's the case.  A link back would be great if do use something.

I'd really love to add a Templates category where people can get a sample EULA, (already linked to the one provided by Jamie,) Privacy statement and Ethos as has been suggested in the comments on one of the articles.  If anyone feels like volunteering these I will post them with a credit link  but make it clear that they are not to be used word for word and explain the SEO aspect.  (Although I don't think just one page has that much of an impact, especially since your site title and meta description would be different, so in Google's eyes it wouldn't be an exact duplicate)

I've posted elsewhere that I am happy to edit a contributor's Symbiosite Home page/About Me page text gratis if they feel they need their English tidying up. So far only a couple have taken me up on the offer (and they didn't need much tweaking at all) so I guess there's no great demand for that amongst Symbio contributors. The offer still stands though, especially if English isn't your native tongue.

I am more than happy to contribute to these templates as well. Many of you have already had a look at my "Ethos" page but I can also cannilbalise/cannibalize my "Cookies and Privacy Policy" page and I can put together promotional stuff, (again, this has been the subject of a small discussion elsewhere) especially if we can get a collaborative effort going when it comes to ideas and the messages we want to get out there. Additionally, if someone then wants me to fine tune the wording of a template for their individual use, I can do that too.

I'm not too sure about EULAs being template-based though. This may be an over-reaction but IANAL and one word out of place or a couple of contradictory statements could cause all sorts of strife for all parties. So maybe EULAs should be the responsibility of the contrib or use of the template hosted by Symbio comes with a total disclaimer. Or do we we have a lawyer-by-day-symbiote-by-night-type contributor, hiding her/his light under a bushel?

On the other hand, I saw these comments by PhilD and steheap in another Symbio thread and I think there's some mileage in thinking about Dan Heller's approach as far as Symbio is concerned. As ever though, contributor independence should take precedence.

I have plenty of time to do this at the moment and I can prioritise/prioritize it so we can get stuff up and out in a timely manner.

Thoughts?

When something stops working just slap your monitor. It usually works.

Absolutely. It's known as "percussive maintenance".

Good idea.

Give me another day or two though...  8)

Interesting Steve. Thanks for doing that.

BTW, did you take into account what currencies different contribs are using? For instance, many of my European cousins will set their prices in Euros and I price in GBP which is worth about 1.50 USD. I mean $1.49 USD. No wait, 1.48 USD. Hold on, it's back to 1.50 USD again... ;)

I added this to my sidepanel using the text widget. Feel free to share/use/edit. Any ideas on where to link it to? Leo do you have a preference?

Sorry to go back a few months but what about this for an idea?

Everyone (who chooses to - this shouldn't be compulsory) has a "Symbiostock Ethos" page that doesn't have to be in a menu or page list but that can be linked to from such a logo that can go in a widget.

If you want an example of what I mean, I've already set an Ethos page up that I link to from my home page - here's a linky. We've had a mini-discussion about promotional and PR type stuff elsewhere and this could fit into that.

Any thoughts, criticisms or corrections?

Russell

I like the idea of it being optional.  You have done a very nice job of pulling all the positive aspects of Symbiostock and your services together.  Have we (Symbiostock members) established a central location where samples of license agreements, privacy policies, Ethos, etc have been created?  That would be a great resource for new members.

I would like to use your ethos page as a starting point for my own if you don't mind?

David

Thanks for the kind words and I've no problem with you using it, David.

And that goes for anyone else - feel free cannibalise my copy.  8)

Actually, I should give a shout out to Tinny whose homepage provided the ideas. I was just the fluffer.   ;)

So do I treat this as a theme and do a theme update? I've unzipped it and it looks like that's what it is but as I'm a n00b, I just want to check...

...check out the Jetpack, I think that has the CSS editor in it that you can enable

Dat's da bunny!

Thanks T.

I'm looking at Amanda's Creative Embers resources on customising the child theme CSS but my WP Dashboard looks nothing like the screenshots.

I've got an Editor under appearance but no specific "Edit CSS" option and certainly no ability to preview before saving. I can get to the child theme CSS using the Editor but there's no Preview or Publish options

Is there a plugin I'm missing?

Russell

Sorry people, it's my fault.

I closed my iS port a couple of weeks back and they have to send me my closing balance.

Keep us posted on that.  Will be interesting to see if they are actually capable of doing so.

It'll be another two months before they pay me. They have to wait for PP sales to go through the system.

A DG transaction is never eligible for seller protection. There is no physical product, hence no tracking number. When there is a spoof case or unauthorized transaction or chargeback, you will always lose the case, if its SNAD or NR case you will get to keep the money.

Ron - what does SNAD and NR stand for?  Trying to figure out what you're referring to here.

SNAD stands for "significantly not as described" and NR is "not received". You sometimes see "INR" which is "item not received".

Hmm. How important is the "Select another theme" thing? Yesterday I just deleted the Arctium theme without selecting another WP theme before uploading and activating/deactivating the 2.5.5 theme zip. I have the child theme installed.

I don't seem to have any problems so far but wonder if I may have broken something that's going to catch me out at some point.

You should be just fine, this is only for the case where the theme needed to be re-uploaded manually, so when you are just doing the easy/standard update it won't be an issue.  Also since you have the child theme it wouldn't have been a problem, but in Ron's case Wordpress won't allow you to delete an active theme so that's why he had to activate another.  Hope that helps!

Yup! Thanks Amanda. Sorry for the slight detour.

I managed to update the site, and it seems to be fine, however one thing is messed up and I put a tremendous amount of work in, which seems to be gone now.

All my images are no longer sorted on date/time published. Its all random now. Which basically comes down to 3 weeks of work gone.

d) select another theme ( other than Symbiostock or child)
e) Delete the Symbiostock Theme ( not the child, not the site just the theme in word press)
