General Stock Discussion / Re: What's happening with Yuri Acrus?
« on: September 06, 2019, 16:45 »
Just wondering if anyone knows what is happening with Yuri Acrus's business? For the longest time he was THE mega selling photographer. He shoots great stuff. He had a huge staff. I can only imagine his earnings has collapsed like everyone else's. In the era of low prices, I can only imagine his high production costs no longer works. I know some of you are not a fan of him. Let's not say negative things about him. Thanks!

He has a very successful photo business with, interns, students and apprentices. He gets big contract jobs because he has the staff, crew, make-up, studio, location scouts and everything needed.

He's an IS exclusive but I doubt that Yuri gives a hoot about Microstock.

Very smart, he played it right, got know, recognized, and moved up.

There's no reason for Yuri to be blogging or posting on these Microstock forums.

Not sure how that citizen journalist site of his ever went.

Best wishes and here's to his continued success.

yuri arcurs in the world of big contract advertisement is zero. you don't know clearly what talks about....he's is still am icrostock with huge cost and falling revenue as everybody...those shooting advertisement, big, big money contract don't even know what is micro stock.

I think the big drama is going to hit all the heavily invested production houses that pay for studios and models that until now submitted massive amounts of similars hoping that can now upload very few files of each setting.

you are spot on ...their tactic most of time is producing similar content and uploading at different times so they can have more chance for a files to sell.

Dont get me wrong, if I go and shoot an aerial of a lake, I will shoot north/south/east west motions at zero altitude and at lets say 100 feet high and out of these 8 files Ill submit 5 or 6.
Until now it worked good and I honestly think that they have a different look. I think I play fair but if SS will make me feel that this is not ok Ill reduce it till I hit the sweet spot.
But...except for the net time of shooting and editing these similars (I honestly think they are not) Im not taking a big hit.

I also believe in slow release of files, not as a way to push them in but as an actual slow release into the market and give them a chance to pop at different times.

Im a mega huge supporter of SS, Ill respect and adjust to the new similar guidelines, I think its for the benefit of most contributors.

SS sells like crazy and I will serve them as long as they exist.

i use also but there ae limits...i shoot food and offer different setup of a recipe, not 2000 like some contributor did in past shooting the same setup 2000 times and uploading it in 3 years month after month. is not a case that i have practically zero refusal for similar continent, despite some fotos own to the same setup.
ss sold like crazy till julep than plain dead.

september begin worst than august and august was not the best month across all agency.

Since April something clearly has been "off" across several agencies and across all genres of content so I think with it being so sudden it might very well be the global economy reading into recession and that affects all industries directly or indirectly and with everyone from individuals to businesses being so massively in debt right now it's not pretty.

Every agency is suddenly making changes, Pond5 obviously, Storyblocks and now SS is seriously limiting what you can upload onto their servers, it is a similar video or photo to what is already on the site it is rejected so they suddenly care about server space although they are presenting it as caring about the customer experience.

Have to get creative and busy making new content and promoting the heck out of it everywhere.

i doubt being creative will make a big difference in micro stock world....you can be creative but too many garbage files....for me it's clear that most sales are made through popular tab, nobody search for new files in that mess of garbages they accepted since 2017....my sales are mostly related to files older than 2017, nothing new sells and they are better content i was sure they had a market...since they reduced tabs to 2 instead to 3 new files sales are simply non existent...i would like the add a chosen by staff files, so new files with good character could have a chance to sell.. the rpd of files uploaded in 2018 and 2019 for me are simply terrible while 2017 i have already passe the 1,5 dollar for each file uploaded. in 2018 and 2019 we are near 0,1 cent. after 2017 they opened the gates et voila.
in addiction for me free stuff is impacting more and more, why you can criticize customer? they go to unsplash and find much better and creative stuff than 99% of files you see in micro, for free...i saw file downloaded 10 millions times...and those are money taken away by micro stock.

great agency once with probably the biggest rpd for me suddenly going down the hill...not a lot to say a 20 30 download per month..in addiction i find so boring the uploading process without serious batch...with ss all i need is 5 minutes to send hundreds of file...the same quantity make me spend 2 hours and more of my life...that's why i still have 500 unfinished files..i need also to release them so for each file a release click, two category...if you use the similar category is still a pain...

microstock is not a way to live...sure in the next 2 3 years is still possible....i-m so fcking angry to myself because i not uploaded all my file in the past and began serious only in 2017, so stupid...2017 is the last year in fact you could upload and earn. i have a collection in catalog manage of file uploaded in 22017 2018 2019....file from 2017 , ok they are online for more time , have earned each more than a dollar and 30....file of 2018 not even 45 cent so far, old one year less...file from 2019 not even 0,12 cent...and my file 20119 are much better and more stock oriented that the one uploaded in 2017....simply new files in the last two years don-t ell ue to the flooding of new files in the last 2 years. and it will be only worst...to have the same return per file of 2017 probably i should have uploaded in 2019 5 6 times the files of 2017....next year you will need 10 times to hope to sell like past year. it-s a war between poor, fired mostly form contributor of country with very low medium salary, lw cost of production and low cost of earning.

super slow strato month....you cannot build a business if they ad one million crap images every weeks. it's clear. offer is hundreds times more than demand. is a normal economic consideration. sure you cannot work 24 to struggle and keep a minimum acceptable earning.

186
it was clear that this is gonna happen soon..they messed up with collection, they diluted the quality accepting zillions o crap just to ty sell cheaper for them files...everything returns in life...soon they will sto growing at all and began losing money and stock will fall down as a rocks.
they did all this with their appalling strategy.
the worst thing is probably they will strongly support newbie files to save 13 cent of royalty per photo sold. they need to earn money somewhere.
personally i'm seeing a tremendous amount of sales in esp this month. stock nee matching ss while 2 months ago was 20% of sales of ss. probably getty is bouncing back strongly, with connect they are killing the need or many small business and editorial to buy from ss.

187
worst week since 2009 worst month since first year. speechless. at this point better don't do-nothing and just collect what comes form micro without any little effort. total waste of time this year uploading content.  maybe september start again abut after a month like this i'm without any wish to work and create content. time to focus on cavan offset and i hope stocksy this year. at least is rewarding mentally to work for such agency. working for agency with image quality like ss is also from a photography point of view depressing.

188
in addiction they last quarte was very bad, probably in the next if things don't change they will lose money and their stock will collapse,...so why not selling files who have a 0,25 cent royalty instead of the expensive 0,,38? it's 13 cent per foto and if you consider 50 million images it means a lot of money, those money they need too make balance looks much better. it's pretty simple to see this.

189
Then there's something going on beyond summer slump and all industry trouble. As it seems, some people see an unexpected bump-up in their sales, while for the majority of us it's the opposite: we've become invisible. I haven't sold a single image in 15 days now, which is totally unprecedented. There's hardly any explanation other than some drastic changes in the algorithm, and i have no idea to whose benefit. Maybe some users are being penalized for reasons unknown.

On the other hand, on AS i've sold twice as much in August as in the previous three months combined. It's still diminutive though.

it's clear they control sales. only blind cannot see this. from one d ay to another completely dead. zero 2.895 in the last 10 days, i have 3 4 every day in july, zero video zero single, a bunch of sub mostly stuff who are in page one our very old files. it's clear they ned to spread sales so every body keep uploading, probably in normal circumstances most of contributor especially the new one couldn't have a single sales with their folio and they would quit uploading. they need to spread the cake to make everybody smallish happy.

190
scaring dead ss...as seemss better is much better.
don't know what they did with algorithm but seems i'm non existent.

191
i thought today was the day when the sales would have been back after long holiday in western europe and the people going back to work...seems i have to wait 2 september. completely dead ss. as dead much more with practically zero sales of new files.  instead is seems to sell a lot...i had a glance at counter in esp and number seems matching ss this month so far and every time i look the number grow, something unusual considering that esp for me is like 20% of ss as revenue. the only drawback is that if the rpd is as low as july even the increase of sals will have small impact. but in case the rpd was like medium year rpd in esp stock could manage to be near ss so far this month.
all n all a clouds future as i see. i have already tons of charismata s stuff done last year  i will upload in september,  and see if sals get normal or better.

192
the best thing of falling earning is that a lot of contributor who upload terrible stuff will soon stop because it's clear they are not earning nothing....folow the thread in ss forum of that puppet who wanna upload 10 k photos in
a year and he still earning peanuts with 7k snapshots and repetition.
my august is not good but next week i bet will be super and rich the same level as last year at least...
by the way counter in esp is exploding..don't know if it's an error but i have near the same download as ss while always it's like 30 %

193
Why you are contacted? Its clear that they should ask something to ss not yiu.. you are providing tge photo but ita ss who sell and ahould have understood thatmaybe it could create problem. Anyway if this was true practicamky every esitorial inagw with people can be found illegal. Dont care just point them out to ss and stop answering. Thats why i use a not real nick name flr stock first i dont want be seen as a stock cheap photographer by my clienta.. who pay me 000... 2 avoid to deal things like this. If they found something illegal in the use thye sue ss not me. An agency is an agency it should stand in front lof contriboutor

after a super july with also 4 video sale with a portfolio of less than 100 video....august is appalling 12 august 85 dollar. it's unbelievable. near 100 percent down compared to last year. one sod and one single the rest only subs. don't know what they did after 20 july but they screwed things up.
i will clean the backlog who will need a lot of times but will not spend a dime on a shooting till i see some improvements. good that is summer and assignment and personal private shooting is rocking especially with rich people...tthe fact that rich are spending like crazy for an hour shooting but normal business cannot even buy photos for penny means a lot to me.

197
10K a month is insane to me. I live in New York too.

I use to make a full time income with stock. I'm back to doing web and graphic design projects but around 35-40% is stock.

yesterday i shoot an anniversary for a couple, 3 hours, 800 dollar....those are money., i do full time but i work like 4 different photographer, stock documentary fine art with top notch gallery and assignment both commercially and personally. those are full proof for the future in case as i think stock will sink more and more. i especially focus on rich people who not have any problems in fork out 2000 dollar for engagement shooting or 5000 for a wedding.

198
it would be pretty difficult to go full time, (not impossible). It would help you have a full time production crew (3-4) people, expert drone operators, tons of models, and money to pay for models and sets.

thats' why most of success producer are from russia or ukraine at the monet...cost of production one fourth of the rest of western world. because to make money now you need shoot model released images with great content, the only files that cannot be found easily free on the web, good luck using unspkash files with people and no release:)....the rest travel food still life nowadays can be easily found in free website without any difficulties, editorial are a niche if you have interesting files, but again a lot of competition. lifestyle with good model, good concept have still a great potential, especially video.

199
More to the point... how much do YOU need to live full time?

I know one woman here in town that lives quite comfortably on $800/mo.  If that were me, then I would say I am just a bit shy of being able to go "full time" for an income.

Personally, $10K/mo is more my style.  And no, stock sales are no more than pocket change and the fun of seeing who liked my stuff enough each day to actually put money on it (as opposed to Facebook 'likes'...).

As it happens though, I am retired.  I travel a lot (8 countries on a 6-month trip already this year), and write a travel/photo blog ( www.mindstormphoto.com ).  That is where most of my focus goes.  After the blog is published, I look to see what else might sell, and upload that too.  I am fortunate enough that I saved and invested heavily when working, so now can do this and no longer have to worry about money. As they say, YMMV... :)

And, FWIW, I do not monetize my blog in any way, and have no interest in doing so.  I started writing it for myself, just to help me remember and relive these trips we take. Then "family and friends" started reading it. Now it has roughly 2000 readers (according to Google Analytics).  In other words, another little ego boost, but with no cash attached. :)

you don't need money but sell photos...if i were so rich to not have any problem of money for my style, stock would be the last way of spend my time.

Slide 5 tells you all you need to know from a contributor standpoint. Number of customers +2% number of contributors +100%. Number of Images up 37% downloads up 3%.

On a positive note, my bet is that most of these new contributors will never have more than 10 images in their port and remain small fish. The ones we have to fear are experienced contributors who set up image factories and are churning out thousands of images a week.

in the east europe they are popping out every day 2 3 factory, in belgrade there are literally hundred of them who use the same model, there is a model agency specialized in stock with 100 model who practically you can find in any serbian factory...russia the same and ukraine even more...cost of production are ridiculous and cost  of living a third of europe...in case ukraine even less outside kiev...how can we compete with these factory if a shooting cost minimum 400 euro and living is super expensive? impossible. that's why most of contributor even in stocksy are coming from eastern euroep....thousand model ready to shoot for 8 dollar hour, studio equipped with profit light at 8 dollar hour rent....most employ 3 4 photographer paid pennies and producing thousand of photo every week.
No you can't compete if you produce directly comparable content...what makes you think you have some kind of right to?  stock is a global industry.

nobody said i have some special right. i just explained why contributor in western emispeher will struggle to survive...like olfactory in western europe who close due to chinese competition. but you cant understand, you live of photography?
You don't have to live off photography to understand it...just have a basic understanding of Economics and History to see the same thing has happened to hundreds of industries over hundreds of years. Eastern Europe is in the Western hemisphere by the way. You give the impression you somehow resent people who come from countries with a lower standard of living and compete on price.

i don' t resend ...i am telling and explain gin why our revenue are falling down and why you can't compete if you live in a richer country with much les infrastructure for modeling and stock photography. you shoot lifestyle? model content? if not please avoid commenting.
When did you take over the forum? I gave up shooting models as I couldn't compete in that market maybe you should consider doing the same or live with it and stop whining. You might even find that when you look back on the day you stopped banging your head against a brick wall and found a more lucrative way of using your talents as one of your happiest days and thank me for it.  ::)

by the way how many make a living without shooting model and released file? probably not even 100 in micro stock...99% of emerald and above in fotolia shoot model. model released are also the only way to defend your folio from free files like unsplash.
that's why model released are important...actually i'm shooting a lot in kiev and moving there from september, ;:)...i don't have nothing against easter country, love them, love their youthness, the people, photographer are super skilled, i just said my opinion about why people like sean who were super profitable till some years ago struggle and will struggle much more, because you can compete with country where people pay a shooting 50 dollar or studio 8 dollar hour, and you can have a ride in taxi for one dollar. IT's IMPOSSIBLE. Travel and editorial still life and the rest sell infinitely less than lifestyle released images.
