It's even worse. I suppose that Walmart's suppliers agree the price in advance and it's not changed unless both parties agree.
I don't know about Walmart, but I do know that some major retailers I have dealt with in the past expect the supplier to provide the product in their warehouse and depending on the sales and sales volume they will adjust the price, and if it doesn't sell the supplier has to take it back.

yep, pure semantics
Maybe, but as sooner as we start thinking we are dealing with a Walmart mindset, the sooner we can plan on how to survive.

I see in multiple threads that people call the places that sell licences to our images, agencies.
I think we have to realize that they are not agents for us at all. They don't care about us or our well being ( as an agent should) all they care about is their bottom line ( which is what a store should do)
They are on-line stores and we provide them with merchandise on a consignment basis.
They are the same as Walmart, and their goals and tactics are the same.

And if you question the security of Symbiostock, you question the security of WordPress.
I think that is a valid concern. My website was hacked a few weeks ago, and they probably got in through Wordpress. I'm not sure if there is a way to guarantee protection from any malicious intent, but Wordpress may be an easier target for people that know how to do these things. So, I think it is definitely something to think about.
Fair enough, but you cant pin that on Leo or Symbiostock. If some people have concerns with the security of WP, then they need to go to the WP boards or contact WP directly
If Security of WP is an issue then maybe SYS should be built on a different platform? I suspect ( though I am likely wrong) that WP itself is fairly secure, but as soon as you start adding multiple plug-ins any security disappears.

No I have not set up a symbiostock site.
Consider me as the guy with the general, not so informed view. The guy who brings perspective, even experience but not knowledge of details. You are also free to give me a lot of minuses. You dont have to listen. I can be all wrong and overreacting.
No I will consider you the guy who has an occasional good idea but is so insistant on seeing the bad parts of the project that everyone just starts to ignore them. I have to ask....why Bother? If you don't have a site, and will likely never have a site, Why spend all this time and effort when you admit you don't have the knowledge to back up your ideas and claims.

I take it that was for the entire calendar, not for just one shot in it?
Obviously, there's a huge difference between doing a job at a known rate, when everything is budgeted against a known return, and shooting any sort of stock where the return is unknowable.
No this budget was per shot. The budget for photography was a small percentage of the overall project budget. The client was a printing company who wanted to show the quality of it's new printing presses. It was a fun project, but the stress of having to produce was very high. post production, which no doubt ran into more hours than the actual shoot, is very cheap!
The shoot with hair and makeup was about 6 hours.... post production 15 minutes ( some colour adjustments) I like to get it right in camera. I posted this because someone asked what a $K image looked like. I doubt I would put this money out myself for stock. The returns

I wonder what is included in the 2k euro shoot
- 100 eur per hour / model? - how many people working on the pictures beside the photographer(s)? - studio rent, electricity, water? - lighting equipment? - insurance? - computer, monitors, photoshop?
http://peopleimages.grsphoto.ca/wp/image/christmas-lady-pin-up/
The budget for this image was between 3 & 5K CDN ( can't remember exact amounts..it was years ago)
Model $600-800 ( full buy out) Set design build, prop rental... $800- 1200 Makeup, hair, wigs.... $500 Stylist ( clothing) .... $500 studio rental...... 2 days $500 Post production ( Photo shop)... $100 Catering, assistants misc.... $400
you know how to spend money, guess we all do but looks like a little too much...
anyway you have an interesting domain name
This was for a calendar series, client paid for 12 images like this... and 12 the year after.... until now not offered for stock.

BTW the plug in I use for log in is "Social Connect" there are likely others out there that are better....
Anything that makes a potential image buyer's visit easier is worthwhile.
But I note that the Social Connect plugin is not actively supported or developed.
There's another plugin "Social Login" that appears activity supported - wonder if anyone has tried it?
http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/oa-social-login
Just had a look... you have to register at another site, and, though it doesn't say it in the description, it looks like it is a paid plug-in.

Depends if you look at equipment as an investment or a cost.
Personally, I like investing in good glass since it will always be useable.

that's what some of us believe & would like to experiment with;
One thing about SYS is, it is an experiment. We are trying something new. It has never been done before ( at least I don't know of this before) With this in mind we need to keep evolving...trying new... testing.... admit when something works....admit when something doesn't work...rebuild...grow and expand. Where will we be 12 months from now? 24 months? No One knows, but I am looking forward to the ride.

My understanding is that Google Plus ( G+) is googles facebook kinda thing. Authourship is a way for G+ to see what you have authoured all over the net.
I can't see how this will hurt your SYS site... but then there are a lot of things I don't understand.

The division has started, it was inevitable, but because a few people without a SYS site threw a tantrum about what Symbiostock is not, we now have a divided community. I am sorry, this is not what I am interested in all. I dont want to deal with this stuff, I started a SYS site to get away from some agencies, now it seems I am need to deal with the same crap in Symbiostock. I am out guys, I am following my own path. I apologize. I will be interested in upgrades and premium features, and being part of the network as is, but I will not be part of standardization. Its the opposite of what I had in mind when I started my site. I will keep an open mind and if I see benefits, I am not that stubborn to change my mind. But I dont want the headaches and frustrations of discussing this and trying to come to a working solution. Sorry guys.
Ron No one will force you into someone else's standards. Someone make some valid concepts as an outsider of what they thought would make it difficult for new buyers to use the network. I suggested some easy fixes that can be done now, that no one has to do.....basically best practices. The network is going to grow and change. People are going to piss on the network, while others are going to nurture it. You will always have your own site where you can do what you want.

I like the idea of hub sites, as well as individual sites.
I see hub sites as a way to give similar topics a central place.
For Example a hub site based on Travel Stock.
The hub could be broken down further to South East Asia, South America, etc....
But, to make this viable the hub creator(s) need to be compensated for their effort ( because to do it right will take an effort.

I have now uploaded 1100+ pics, and I hold my horses in order to see some real activity before I continue uploading the rest of my 5000-6000 files. So far there has been none. Not one serious registration, certainly no sales, only spam comments. Google analytics shows 200-300 visits in total, but none from a serious customer. So I guess patience is required, I will spend my efforts on the traditional agencies for a while, until something happens here. That does not mean I am giving up, I just realise it is going to be a long journey that may even change the whole industry.
It would be interesting to know if some other members share my experience.
My portfolio is much smaller but I have had similar results. But, I have read here and other places as well, that sales percentages of incoming traffic is very small. 200- 300 visits is closer to zero than to where we want to be before we will see consistant sales. Something else to consider is google and SEO likes change and new. you shouldn't just build a site and forget about it, you should makes changes, add images, add links to blog posts to keep the crawlers coming back to check your site.

I am new to this, but I was wondering why registration was required.
My understanding is ( and if I am wrong please tell me) registration is required in order to have a place to "put" the images once they are purchased. Paypal will provide all the details we may need about the buyer, but with creating a folder for the shopping cart to store their purchases this system will not work.

I would be interested in the Google registration. I think I will give it a try.
As far as the EULA is concerned I agree that 3 to 5 samples would be good. But I think individuals will customize as needed. Are there different versions needed for different licensing requirements and will there be different versions needed to meet various national legal requirements? Just some thought.
David
The problem with customizing EULA is the potential client then has to read yours before they purchase. I don't think there are much differences between nations,( though I am not a lawyer and have never played one on TV) The idea is to make it easier for customers, which, hopefully, will make us all more money. The idea I have is the 3, or 5, or 8 different standard EULA would cover the different licensing requirements.

I know you typed it in wrong...and no it does not change my answer... but my answer may still be wrong... That is how I have dealt with it.

I would be happy to use a common eula, as long as it covers all things correctly and thoroughly. I have seen some that were way too broad, imho. Registration...i am still on the fence because i dont think it can be done and still allow me control.
If you use a google registration like I have on: http://peopleimages.grsphoto.ca/wp/customer-licence-and-file-management-area/You have the same control.... it just is easier for your potential clients to log in... 1 click instead of click, type, click, wait for email, type, click..... As for common EULA I don't think we will ever agree on 1, so I am suggesting we use 3 to 5 different ones, allowing you the option to choose.... or use your own. From the client perspective knowing that the EULA is the " general royalty free Symbiostock EULA" or whatever we call it means they only have to read it once.... not read every sites verbage.

Coming back to this post rather than starting a fresh one. Finally have a wee bit of time to play. I have set up a subdomain stock.pixartdesign.com but.....
I can reach it from http://stock.pixartdesign.com but not from http://www.pixartdesign.com. Have I done something wrong with the setup? I would like to be able to hand out this URL, but I automatically type in www when I visit a site.
I assume you mean I can get to it from http://xyz.com but not from http://www.xyz.com. Yes this is normal. You have to go into your cpanel and do a redirect of www.xyz.com to xyz.com. You don't usually have to worry about this with main domains, but you do with sub domains. Hope this help.

On a couple of other threads it has been pointed out the "weakness" in not having a centrialized Regiration and common EULA.
These would be good to have. I also understand that it isn't likely to happen.
I would like to propose alternatives.
Central Registration would be good to have, but would be a security nightmare. Presently registration is required to keep others from using paid for downloads. I think the solution would be to use someone else's registration system, such as Facebook, Google, or Wordpress.org. There are plug-ins that allow this to happen easily. For various marketing reason I think google might be the best choice to "suggest" to potential clients.
For the EULA I suggest we come up with 3 to 5 that most people can aggree on. Post these on a central location.... symbiostock.com.... and use descriptive title. Then on my site I can say I use the " Free Trade" EULA and link to that. In the future, if implimented, this could be included in the image database per image.... which would make it searchable as well.
Comments?

It is also something that should be turned off straight out of the box. I am guessing but I think most people would prefer not to have their sales tracked by the network.
