Sorry for trying to avoid confusion and complications, before they snowballed.

Thank you.

They way I see it, no one is paid to check our images... they get paid if they "sell" images.  No cost, of fees to you, just a small percentage of what is sold through their site.

378
I understand what you're after, but I think you may have a hard time finding network connections willing to kick a percentage of sales back to help promote it.

I don't know... right now we are used to giving away 50% or more in fees... I would be happy to pay 5-10% to someone who is better at marketing than I am.

Why are we doing this?  We want to make money
How do we make money? By having buyers find, like, and purchase our images.
How do we compete against the agencies? We have to offer something that they don't.

Do we offer lower prices....  I don't think so.
Do we offer quality image.... Yes

We are in the business that crowd sources images, but the buyer has to weed through the images to find what they want.  The agencies have search engines that provide "best match".

I would like to open up the network to allow for crowd source curation, or photo editors or ????

What we can offer, which is different, is humans creating collections based around themes that the humans are interested in.

I think this is how we can market the network.... and make money.

Do you want me to come to your site and tell you what you should have for sale and what not? Then why do you want to come to mine, or someone else and do that?

Let the buyers decide!

No I don't want to "tell" you what to put on your site.

What I want is a way to link to what I think are the best images on your site, and other sites in the network.  Then I can publish a list of "Glenn's list of best racing pics" ( if you are on model mayhem think of lists of images)  I will then have a "curated" list of what I think are "the best"

If I get known as a good editor of images, I will have buyers coming to my site in order to quickly find what I consider the best ( if they don't like my vision then they may go to XYZ because they like their vision)

This will not effect what you publish on your site at all!!!!

Does this make sense?

If I am going to invest time, effort and money into marketing micro-stock I want to be able to get a return on my investment.

Right now, the only site I see as being worth this effort is my own Symbiostock network site.

I am still not sure about the way it is being implemented, and it is months away from being really useful, but the idea and thoughts behind it could be the freedom we are all looking for....

382
SEO will help us with google but I don't think it will bring return buyers if the network is full of crap...though "one man's garbage is another man's treasure"

I would like to propose a shift in what this network is.

I would like to see a way to have the images curated.  I would like to see the curators get a (small) percentage of the sales that they generate.

The way I see this is:  xyzstockcurator, lists on their site images that they like from the entire network. When a buyer purchases through ( through not from) xyzstockcurator 5% of the sale goes to them, the other 95% goes to the contributor.

This could be a way for photo-editors to help expand and grow the network.

If we can put this into place we could even do something like 1% of sales goes to symbio stock co-op inc ltd, to be used for development and marketing.

383
As I start to upload images I think about how many of these are "good" enough to be on my site and how many are fillers.  Without a review process I might ( will likely) post images that others consider crap.

If all the people on the network post there good images as well as their "also ran" images can the network ever be successful?

A couple of ideas are bouncing in my brain... but it is starting to rain and I loose internet in the rain.... :(

Just to add to the thread... does anyone know how to make the preview image ( the one that shows when you click on it..with watermark) larger?

385
Someone mentioned about listing all members on our sites even if they are not part of our network - I think this is probably a good idea as search engines seem to like links.  If you did not like what someone does on their site you could just miss them off :)

I have used the information from Cascoly's table to create this page and just tucked it away with the information pages sort of out of sight but where search engines might go

Thoughts ?  (and any corrections of course)

This is a good idea, but don't make your list too long.... I believe that google doesn't like long link lists ( 20?)

Symbiostock - Development Area / Editorial Images
« on: April 07, 2013, 07:07 »
I am wondering how others are dealing with Editorial images?

I have images that are not released that I want to post on my site... how do I mark them as editorial only.

I have been thinking of using an editorial watermark.

The other option would be to try and put a check book on all the images.... but I don't have the skills to do that and would likely screw up my site.

Glenn

<snip>
Just a comment on your images - the watermark is very prominent, and could put off a buyer as you tend to focus a lot on the words of the watermark to the detriment of the image behind. Just my thoughts!

Steve

I have been thinking about that and that I may have to redo things.  I am also wondering how I am going to handle editorial images...... any suggestions anyone?

I had a look at traveling light, and I think they are running a combination of photoshelter and word press.... it would be nice if we could get our sites to look like that.

Looking at this it seems to be a problem could be with the watermark... it is looking for the symbiostock watermark and it isn't there, or it is invalid.

Check the directory to see if it is there....

The Child theme ( which you should be adjusting) has a white background.

394
I have loaded, installed and configured the social contacts plug-in and it seems to work pretty smoothly.

I haven't tried using it for a sale yet... a few other things I need to work out first.

Symbiostock - Development Area / Re: Child Theme questions
« on: March 31, 2013, 19:40 »
the child theme is where you make any major changes to styling etc.,

You leave the parent alone.

You do this so that future updates will work, and you will want to apply them to the parent, which then gets passed to the child.

396
Would it be possible to have an "i agree to the terms of this license" check box during the check out process?

397
If someone wants an image they will register... but if they have the choice between grabbing it off of google or doing doing one or two clicks, I am hoping they will buy my image.

If they have to register, wait for an email ( I assume) then go back and find the image, and then check out... they have to really "want' the image...and want to be marketed to.

I would be happy with  facebook log in, but I am not sure if wordpress supports this.

398
I have been playing with a test set-up.

Do you have to log-in to the site to select/ purchase an image?

Is there a way around this?

I want to put as few clicks in the way of purchases as possible.
