Selling Stock Direct / Re: Selling images through Facebook
« on: September 26, 2015, 15:23 »
Great job Alessandro0770!!

You almost have 3K friend in you facebook profile, this is so good!!

I must tell you two things about facebook, in one hand when you have a profile the friends limit is 5000; in the other hand it is not allowed to create a profile with the name of a company/busniess or anything that is actually not a person, but this is not a big problem now because a lot of people are creating facebook profiles for companies or little busniess.

Anyway you must considere that after you reach the friend limit (5000) facebook administrators checks your profile (sometimes not immediately) and if this is not a real person they transform the profile to a page (you cannot be friend of a facebook paga, just give your like).

I can see a lot of clip arts DVDs or CD that you can buy at ebay and i want to do something similar with some of my vector work.

I want to know if anybody know what must i do to create the official "product", i mean register or patent my CD or DVD.

Anybody have any idea??

Right. I wasn't disagreeing with you at all. I meant to say a monster week the week before last, then last week was among the worst I have had when my port was only 500 images.

There are too many people reporting the same phenomena, so some kind of earning cap is a reality

I really dont understand what you mean with that... my images are'nt about food...

I honestly do believe there is a delay or server lag sometimes, because you can sit there and refresh your earnings for an hour at a time (sometimes) and not see a change.  Even on high-earnings days.  Although those seem to be fewer and further between, lately.  It might be a technical thing.

I don't think Shutterstock is "skimming" or limiting us in our income potential.  All contributors are the backbone that helped them gain and continue to hold their top spot in the microstock market.  They haven't been shady in the past, and let's hope it stays that way.

I also agree with this dealy but anyway when i say that i think that there is a earning limit is watching my earning history, not my current day earning, i think that the limit is not day by day but month by month.

As you say... "All contributors are the backbone that helped them gain and continue to hold their top..." maybe for this reason they try to give a reasonable earning acording to your country, im pretty sure that if you pay the money that i earn to a Canadian he just is gonna stop uploading images because he can go outside and earn about 3000-5000 US$ per month, so you really need to pay better to people in other countries (for example)... i dont know it is just a theory

I have also a "strange theory". I believe that people's earnings are depending on the area where they are. I read a lot of information about earnings on this forum (and not only here) and I believe if I l lived in Germany, U.K., U.S.A, and so on, my income would have been higher. Also, if I lived in Moldova, Georgia, Syria, etc. my earnings would have been lower.
What do you think ?

I strongly agree with this theory, maybe SS pays what is reasonable acording with the place where you live, i live in a south american country and i only can earn a similar amount of money to the minimum wage in my country (which it is a very sad amount by the way). Now I'm working so hard to generate new content and upload images every day, but this does not change earning rate.

The general explanation of this is that the quality of my content is not so good or maybe i didnt use the correct keywords and for this reason my earning is lower... but im not sure about it and i start to believe that SS limits earning acording to your country (among other things).

What can we do ? Or, how we can be pretty sure?

Good question Sebalos, i really dont know...

I still have the hope of earn similar amounts that some users report (2k per month or more) which is almost impossible to earn working in my country...

« on: June 06, 2015, 08:38 »
Teddy, really? I was just asking -and wondering how people search. My doubts were based only on my own behaviour.

I never use category search. If I wanto to "narrow results" to let's say food, I simply add Food to the search query. Hard to imagine that a food picture would not have included the food keyword.

I agree with you, but maybe if the pic is on food category and you search by food, search algorithm make this picture more relevant. The question is: category is related to search keyword?

Well, when you upload vector illustration most of images fix good with category "abstract" and also "backgrounds"... so some times y just put abstract and backgrounds category and dont waste time thinking and choosing different categories

Im just uploading a big number of images today and to save some time i just select everyone and put general categories; but now im wondering, how important is to put images in correct category to sell better?

337
My upload was 40 vector illustration; so today (after almos 1 day i make the upload) website told me that i upload just .eps files but not .jpg ones; but i upload everyone (80 files)...

I must wait a little more?

Why did you include the term "Washington D.C." in this picture keywords??

Maybe a designer was looking for Washington pictures because of work but he also is a baboon fan or he is also looking for animal pictures for another project, and when he saw the picture he just buy it...

Obviously, I didn't include "Washington DC" among the keywords. This is why I have the little question mark next to the search string, asking me if I want to add "Washington DC" to the keyword list.

Ok, so this is a DT search algorithm problem or something, i saw this before in some of my sales, i think that the algorithm register the last term you search, so if you search for baboons in one window and then you search for Washington in other one the algorithm register you last search, if you then buy any image without make a new search this sale is asociated with the last term you search; in this case Washington... this is just a thoery of course...

(or maybe he is looking for photos of politicians in Washington D.C. and the baboon was the best representation he could find)

Why not just wait a few more weeks for Leaf's survey from 2014 to come out? It has the number of folks, average income, average hours- lot's of great information that all folks will enjoy reading.

Well that's great, I had never heard of "Leaf's survey", thank you for the info :D

Why do you want this information?
For what purpose?
To make some inane assumptions and meaningless comments that no-one cares about?
What difference does it make to you, or anyone else, what I earn, you earn or anyone else earns?
You are asking for personal information without explaining why or what you will do with it.

For me it is an interesting post, knowing how others earn will help us to have a general view of how you can earn rather than just a personal experience

I make $2.5 million per year.  8)

How in the world does that help you get a general view of "how you can earn"? Barry is asking about total income (i.e. not just from stock photography) so it isn't like you can even take the high earners and look at their portfolios to copy their work. It tells you nothing.

Not to mention the fact that a low-five figure income makes you relatively poor in Switzerland but very wealthy in Cambodia. So, another level of "it doesn't matter and it isn't any of your business".

Well maybe im wrong.

Actually im not a newbie but also I'm not an expert in microstock. Now im still working in my "real life" work (aka non-internet work) and also invest almost all my free time creating vector illustrations to upload (im dont work with photos, just vector illustrations); and sometime I doubt if the effort is worth it.

Without this forum I would be a guy uploading images without knowing how much you can expect to earn or what is the best way of doing things, in the other hand information regarding how much other more experienced contributors earn will give me an expectation of how far i can go with this; and especially if they tell us then what was the road traveled (in case they want to share with us).

So I think that the feedback that this post can give to us might be useful and interesting.

Was that a joke?

The most recent experience that someone shared with us is 15 years ago...

You have recent experience selling pictures in DVD / CD on ebay? Can you give us more specific information?

347
15 years ago, I sold cds and dvd on ebay that way, but it was never very profitable, even with 100+ images on the disc; competition kept the price below $10 for the most part.

early on, when ebay allowed digital downloads it was reasonable to sell that way, but they disallowed that many years ago

Maybe after 15 years it is possible to sell more expensive

Jatrax, we also have another partially unknown issue related with search engine; the "popularity".

As you know in SS images can be sorted by populariy, i recently ask in the forum what popularity exactly means, but most of people dont know; it is something like downloads per image and its relation with the time that image was online... but as some people can see... some images that was never downloaded sometimes are more "popular" (under this popularity concept) that other with several downloads... so popularity is a relation between time online and sells and one or more secret factors

With this thread and my recent experience i have a new little theory that this third factor can be the number of images in the batch that was sended.

Maybe they assume that large batches means quicky image development, and sorter ones means more work per image; and therefore they estimate an inverse relationship between the quality of the images and the number of images sent in a batch.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Shutterstock earning cap ?
« on: April 13, 2015, 15:45 »
This is a good question (and issue), beacuse i recently upload large batches hoping a big increase in earnings but earnings are now almost the same, i can see new images being selled but not significant change in earnings, so earning cap when you upload large batches is a solid theory for me.

I would like to know better how the system works because I spent my holidays and all my recent free time trying to upload between 30 and 45 vector illustration per day and after 3 weeks (as i told before) no significant changes at earnings  :-\  :-\  :(  :(
