Selling Stock Direct / Anyone Use Shopify?
« on: February 20, 2015, 02:03 »
I'm just wondering if anyone here uses Shopify and if so do you see a profit after the expense of using  their service and your hosting costs? If you do use them home much data do you put on your site and what sizes of photos do you offer?

Thanks

General Photography Discussion / Zipping a Photo Problem
« on: February 20, 2015, 01:51 »
I need to zip some jpg photos so I tried win zip and also the compress info on my Mac feature to zip a 5mb file but when I checked the zip size on both Win Zip and the Mac zip they still said 5mb. Am I doing something wrong or do jpg files not zip further down than 5 mb?

Thanks

General Stock Discussion / SS Subscription Price Confusing
« on: February 18, 2015, 21:26 »
I can not wrap my head around the numbers, SS pays me .38 cent for Subs but a Purchaser pays SS $199 a month and gets 25 downloads a day. An average month is 30 days thats 750 downloads. 750 downloads x .38 = $285. So that would put SS at a negative $86.

Does this mean that they are basically giving the subs away at a loss and attempting to make up the difference with the other download types?

Does anyone know what the price breakdown is for the different download types. For example how much does a purchaser pay SS for a Sub Download, A on Demand , A Enhanced etc. ?

Thanks,

Selling Stock Direct / Anyone Using WooCommerce?
« on: February 18, 2015, 20:47 »
Is anyone here using WooCommerce?  If so how does it allow for an instant download after a PayPal payment is made and how does it protect all of your images from someone downloading more than once or prevent someone from finding the image in your web page files and downloading for free?

Thanks.

General Photography Discussion / Sales Returning to Normal?
« on: January 04, 2015, 21:19 »
Last year was my First year in Stock Photography and during the Holidays I freaked out because my sales dropped from Dec 23 till Jan 10th. This year It has followed that same pattern although I was hopeful it would pick back up faster to normal speed. Does anyone else have a down turn in sales during this time period and if so when do you typically see your sales go back to normal?

Software / Lightroom Focus Mask?
« on: January 04, 2015, 03:13 »
Does Lightroom offer a Focus Mask Plugin? I see that Capture One has a focus mask, but I am used to using Lightroom and like Lightroom, does anyone used both of these programs? Has anyone tried the one plugin I found at capturemonkey.com, sounds like some dude made it which makes me skeptical if I want to try and use it!

General Stock Discussion / 85mm or 70-200mm or both?
« on: December 28, 2014, 00:44 »
So far as a stock photographer I have only done studio with objects. Now that I have that down pretty good I am planning on learning how to photograph people. My question to those of you who photograph people is would you choose a 85mm lens or a 70-200mm lens or would you use both? Also if you could only pick one lens would you choose 85mm or 70-200mm if those where your two choices?

Thanks

Canon / What is the Advantage of IS on Canon Lenses?
« on: December 27, 2014, 20:01 »
I am looking into buying a 70-200mm Lens for my Canon, my question is what is the importance of the Image Stabilization feature as the lens without it is $700 and with the IS the lens is $1,299? I plan to use it primarily in studio with flash so my thought was that since flash freezes the shot why bother with the IS except for those instances that I am outside with it, but even then is it really needed? Still being new to photography I don't know anything about Image Stabilization and wether it makes that much of a difference?

Also one version of this lens opens up at f4 and the other at f2.8, does this make a big difference as well?

General Stock Discussion / Where to Live as a Stock Photographer?
« on: November 14, 2014, 02:39 »
I am wondering where most Stock Photographers live, in and around a Large City or Small Town?

I recently moved from a large city to a smaller city and am thinking about moving back to a larger metropolis.

Currently I do all my photos in the studio but soon I want to start moving into photographing people and I think a large city will be important!

What do you think?

Where would you live if you could move for Photography?

General Photography Discussion / Isolation Question?
« on: July 30, 2014, 18:45 »
I am working on a photo with a lot of fibers and I want to isolate it on a white background at pure white. Typically when I do isolations I will take the photo into photoshop and use the pen tool to select the object and then put in a 100% white background. With a bunch of fibers, using the selection tool is not going to work out.

How can I get a 100% white background in this situation? Do I blow out the backdrop with a strobe? Or is there a method in photoshop I can do?

Thanks

Newbie Discussion / Shoot in AdobeRGB or sRGB?
« on: May 09, 2014, 19:08 »
I am in the middle of trying to understand how to save a clipping path and opened a new can of worms for my self which is should I be taking photos in sRBG or AdobeRGB. As of right now I am taking my photos in Adobe RGB and editing them in Photoshop with AdobeRGB and Exporting them from Lightroom as AdobeRGB.

Do the Stock Sites change your submissions from AdobeRGB to sRGB. Also should my images be at 16 bit or 8 bit because currently I am submitting 16 bit.

Symbiostock - General / Symbiostock on Existing Hosting?
« on: May 08, 2014, 00:45 »
I have my own Domain and Hosting and want to know if I can put Symbiostock on the hosting plan and domain I already have or do I have to create a new website and domain through symbiostock.com and have it hosted with them instead?

If I can put it on my web hosting and existing domain how do I do that? When I go to symbiostock.com it wants you to find a domain and create a site.

Thanks

General Stock Discussion / Helicon Focus Question
« on: May 05, 2014, 20:27 »
When I look at my photos in Lightroom they look Great but when I take my photos that I am going to stack into Helicon Focus they look dual and washed out. Does anyone know why that happens and how to fix that, I am shooting in Raw and saving as a Tif when I save in Helicon Focus. Do I need to save the Metadata first or export them to PhotoShop first?

General Stock Discussion / Submitting to 123rf Question
« on: April 26, 2014, 10:54 »

General Stock Discussion / Whats up with Dreamstime?
« on: April 25, 2014, 18:35 »
I have been wondering what the deal is with Dreamstime for a long time. All my top sellers at SS don't do much on Dreamstime and I can't even find them because I gave up after so many pages back, yet on SS they are at the top of the first page! I have all the same images on Dreamstime as SS and yet the income is about 3% in comparison to SS yet they are one of the larger agencies.

Do I need to cut down my Keywords or is Dreamstime under Reproting their sales or Should they be demoted to a lower Tier?

What are your thoughts or suspicions?

General Stock Discussion / What is deathtothestockphoto.com ?

Does anyone know what this site is about, deathtothestockphoto.com?

So people are talking about leaving iStock Exclusive so they can be on other stock sites such as Shutterstock which may or may not be a good thing which brings me to my question for those of you who are Non-Exclusive and are on both sites.

If you were to take lets say your best selling photo on iStock and compare it to the Sells you have with that same photo on Shutterstock, which site sells the most of that image in terms of number of downloads?

Please post your numbers on the downloads one vrs the other! No need to mention the photos subject matter or income unless of course you wish to share that too!

Thanks

General Stock Discussion / Does Social Media Help your Sales?
« on: April 21, 2014, 12:34 »
I know social media is supposed to be a big deal but I wonder how many people here actually have seen it help there sales? It would seem that unless your friends on social media are graphic designers then spending your time promoting yourself on social media would not really bring you that many more sales!

Seems like people looking for stock photos would be heading straight for the Stock Sites instead of social media sites. What are you thoughts on this?

If iStock is changing to Subs and Exclusives are getting a bum deal then is Earnings Rating for Exclusive of 307.7 still accurate?

My end Goal is to be Exclusive for iStock but if they are going to lose there 307.7 Exclusive Earning Rating and have it drop below 83.5 Shutterstock Rating then obviously the Exclusive option is out!

General Stock Discussion / Photography and Humidity Question
« on: April 03, 2014, 18:27 »
Just wondering if anyone here lives where there is a lot of humidity and how that has an effect on your camera such as moisture getting inside your camera or fogging the lens etc...?

My wife is interested in Stock Photography and I am already on Shutterstock, can my wife also have an Account or do we have to just put our photos on the same account? Was not sure if Shutterstock would dock us for having two accounts from the same address etc..?
