Shutterstock.com / The Incredible Shrinking Portfolio
« on: July 07, 2016, 11:41 »
When we got the email about spamming, I noticed the size of my portfolio seemed to be more than a dozen images smaller than it was before. But I wasn't sure. So just to assure myself I wasn't nuts, I took a screen shot of the number of images in my port that day, Thursday: 9937.

Since then I've added at least 20 new vectors, yet the total number in my port has DROPPED from 9937 to 9926. That means at least 31 images have been deleted from my portfolio since last Thursday...and I believe dozens more were deleted previous to that, because I clearly remember being very close to 10,000 images back in March and thinking I'd be hitting 10,000 by April with no problem.

I've never received an email from them about any images being deleted, and I'm unaware of any policy they have of, say, automatically deleting images that haven't sold after a certain length of time...unless I'm wrong about that?

Anyone else?

iStockPhoto.com / Hilarious iStock MetaWatch CIA email

"Your keywords require improvement.

General suggestions for better keyword management:

1) Use simple and accurate terms that represent only what is depicted in the image. Avoid including end use ideas and imagined contexts.

2) Disambiguate all terms. Check them for accuracy. Do not duplicate disambiguated terms.

3) Avoid keywording an entire batch with the same terms. Review each individual file in your batch for accuracy before uploading."

OMG. Seriously? The site that's hurtling towards a fiery crash, riddled with problems, sales plummeting, centuries-old disambiguation and uploading process keeping many files from being found, losing buyers by the minuteand they're wasting valuable time and resources sending emails to people telling them their keywords require improvement?

Which keywords? For which of my thousands of images?

iStockPhoto.com / $40 rollover "subscriptions"
« on: May 09, 2016, 07:07 »
Forgive me if this has been covered before...$40 for 10 images, with a subscription that can be rolled over if unused? So $4 per image. Was this the deal contributors complained about, so iS decided to give us our percentage royalty rather than a subscription royalty? I can't remember.

Also, at the bottom of the page it says buyers will lose the right to roll images over if they don't auto-renew their subscription. So iS keeps the $40/month whether people buy anything or not? In that scenario iS gets $40, we get nothing, buyer gets nothing.

Shutterstock.com / Disappearing sales
« on: April 25, 2016, 07:22 »
Yesterday there was an odd disconnect between sales stats on my page (earnings and earnings by date didn't match up, with sales not appearing), and this morning some of my sales are simply disappearing...when I refreshed my earnings by date stats page just now, expecting to see more sales since I last looked, two of them disappeared instead, leaving me with fewer sales than I had two hours ago.

Anyone else?

Off Topic / RedBubble tax reciept
« on: April 13, 2016, 11:52 »
I'm new to selling my images Print On Demand, so maybe this is how it normally works? I made my first sale on RedBubble and just recieved an emailed receipt for my tax records that shows a $2.00 printing fee deducted from the full sale amount, and an assurance that it's been paid in full and I don't owe them any money.

This sounds like the way CreativeMarket is handling income tax issues. Is this usual on POD sites?

Shutterstock continues its takeover of the Empire State Building while cutting our EL earnings:

I used to defend them....no more. Not after their nasty move of cutting our EL royalties. Next in the news, I'm sure, will be that they are posting record growth and record profits.

UPDATE: SOMEONE POINTED OUT THAT I MADE A MISTAKE. Freeart is NOT run by Blanes. I must have mistakenly typed "freepik" into the registration search while meaning to type "freeart" early this morning. I apologize profusely. While Blanes is responsible for freepik.com, flaticon.com, photaki and a Spanish version of Freepik, he has nothing to do with freeart.com.

I'll change my other posts as well. SO, so sorry. Please forgive me. The last thing I want to do is accuse someone (however nasty) of something he hasn't done.

Symbiostock - General / Goodbye, Symbiostock
« on: January 08, 2016, 14:34 »
Well, the inevitable has finally happened: Bluehost has shut down my Symbiostock website for performance issues. And they also shut down my personal portfolio site as well, since it was hosted under the same account. So now at the very least I need to find a new host and rebuild my personal website, since I need that for my real career.

Any suggestions for a portfolio site?

What a waste of time and money the whole enterprise was for me. Sad.

I know it's New Year's Day and everyone's off work and hung over, but I've never, ever seen sales this slow, not even in the past post-holiday slumps. The whole world must have really partied last night.

Happy New Year, btw!

I submitted by first tries at video two weeks ago, and they're still sitting there. How long is it taking for video to be reviewed at SS? I hate to waste time doing any more until I'm sure my attempts will pass muster.

General Stock Discussion / Irony of ironies
« on: November 12, 2015, 13:32 »
So I belong to the Freelancer's Union, which right now has a big campaign going about "freelance isn't free." Their latest FB post directs to a website with an article about the founder of the union...featuring a watermarked cartoon they obviously didn't pay to license.

I commented and emailed the website that licenses the work (cartoonstock.com). I'm hoping I'm wrong and they "forgot" to replace the watermarked comp with the image they downloaded. We'll see if I get a response.

General Stock Discussion / Requests for custom work
« on: October 22, 2015, 14:50 »
I know there's an old thread about this, but I hate reading a "new" thread only to realize that it's five years old.

Anyway, do you guys get requests from buyers for custom work? I'm happy to do work for people I "know," whether in "real life" or through groups like this (thanks again!), but I'm finding that requests from "strangers" are just a waste of my time. Most of the time when I tell them a price I never hear from them again. And a big red flag for me is when they insist on talking on the phone...that almost always means they think they can sweet talk me into working for next to nothing with their amazing charm. I've been on a few of these phone calls this year. (And some of these people were referred to me by my advertising colleagues.)

Perhaps the solution is to raise prices on my site so much that custom prices aren't a shock. Opinions? Success stories?

Dreamstime.com / Dreamstime is on a roll
« on: October 21, 2015, 05:02 »
[rant] A bad roll, unfortunately. I think my weekend reviewer from Shutterstock quit and moved to Dreamstime. Rejections for too simple, poorly executed, too similar (Christmas vs. Hanukkah...yeah, they're definitely the same holiday), auto tracing (I don't auto trace anything), blah blah blah. At least Shutterstock gives me decent sales. Dreamstime is just annoying.[/rant]

I wish her luck. But my cynical side says they hired a woman to set her up for a fall. Hope I'm wrong. This part is typical Getty: "Getty Images led the industry into the digital age and has been responsible for every major innovation in the visual content business." Please.  ::)

General Stock Discussion / Why Dollar Photo Club sucks
« on: September 17, 2015, 12:02 »
So Adobe Stock is promoting their $5 sale on Facebook, and you have customers replying that you shouldn't pay a whopping $5 because you can get the same images for $1 on DPC.

Kill that thing already.

73
He just conveniently forgets to mention he licensed the illustrations from Shutterstock, but didn't even bother to pay for an extended license, which is what he needs to use the images on t-shirts. And then he copies the original illustrator's style (poorly) to create more t-shirt designs. But best of all, he claims he doesn't even know who these artists are, because that information isn't really available on the site. Where is he looking? The copyright info is right there.

Getty/iStock have teamed up with Slidely (slide.ly) to offer our images FREE so people can create slideshows (also featuring FREE copyrighted music) to share on Facebook. I just joined quickly to test it out and in a few seconds created a slideshow with images I recognize from my fellow microstockers, including really popular photos and vectors (just jpgs of the vectors), then added FREE copyrighted music and shared it (only to myself) on Facebook...just to see if I was hallucinating or what....though you have the option to share it with friends or make it public for everyone to see. Within a couple of minutes I had a lovely FREE slideshow to watch. Yay! No attributions, no copyrights, no watermarks, nothin'.

The slideshow can be blown up to full screen. Images are a bit low res, but certainly good enough to take a screenshot and steal.
