but what shows is the futility of any boycott -- even removing 2 million images would only reduce the total by 1%. no one will notice. delete 20 million and SS will replace them quickly (and no portfolio consists of all best sellers - likely 20% of a portfolio produces 80% of income)
delete your images for other reasons, but don't imagine it will affect SS at all.
... I was encouraged to see the figure for uploaded images per week fall from 1.6M on 1 June to below 1M today, probably more important than the total number in the collection as much content ages quickly.
... So a boycott is not going to make a difference to searches for happy smiley people doing happy smiley things or isolated tomato. It will be the specific images missing from SS, because it covered almost everything and everywhere, and these will not be instantly replaced by image factories, rather than the generic which will be their undoing as the result of frustration on the part of buyers.
what does a drop in images uploaded have to do with images DELETED? - w worldwide lockdowns (esp asia & russia), it's not unexpected to see fewer images being produced Removing 2 million QUALITY images will leave massive holes in the collection, ...
how do you know 2 million QUALITY images have been deleted? (or importantly, quality images that are actually SELLING?)
...And the images that are disappearing are being replaced with mostly similars garbage. ...
and you know this HOW? how many images leaving are those that weren't selling (or even [shocking!], 'similars garbage')
Seriously? Even if fewer images are being produced, the numbers would still be going up, not down. I would venture to guess that with lockdown vector artists, for example, would have more free time to sit in their PJs drawing stuff. That might be why, even though many vector artists have turned off their ports, vector numbers have remained steady.

I think it's possible to make more rather than less revenue from the new Shutterstock earnings structure.
It depends on the quantity of your image sales and what the portion is between subscription and on-demand/single & other.
James Wheeler posted a video about his calculations based on the new earnings structure https://youtu.be/UJT1RqMGHkY
Any more videos youd like to share? Its almost as if you came fully armed to this thread.

There seems to have been a sudden influx of new vector contributors in late May-early June who each uploaded thousands of vectors in one day. Heres one. http://m-rank.net/?search=240023765Thats why vectors are holding steady despite so many people disabling their ports.

I've no intension of boycotting Shutterstock by suspending or deleting my portfolio. For one thing, I'm at a higher RPD in June 2020 than in June 2019 or June 2018.
I think there has been a fixation on $0.10 downloads. So far this month I've received an average of $0.44 per sale.
I upload to seven agencies and agree with the view expressed in this video https://youtu.be/XWlNVgC7xuE about exclusive accounts and diversity.
Another anonymous person with a miraculous RPD...quelle surprise.
Well, the author of this video has to sell her courses.
I see Macrovector is still there...they were/are #1.

Some new ideas I've been brainstorming and happy to share.
https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2020/06/13/shutterstock-earnings-cut-hitting-them-where-it-hurts/
I like it, but could you please add a section about the most powerful weapon: stop uploading.
This is the easiest thing to do, even for those who really need the money right now. Instead, everyone can upload and focus and share links to the agencies that support us.
The upload volume has dropped to below one million, let us see what SS does when that number goes down to 500 000 or less...
It is also the thing many artists can keep up for a few weeks.
It is amazing they still totally refuse to talk to contributors, but withholding content is IMO the strongest to demonstrate to all agencies who controls the content.
Not only has he not disabled his port (and his blog post says he doesnt plan to, not even on June 15), hes actively uploading new images. His port has an editorial shot dated June 6, 2020.
Yes, I'm guilty of uploading 5 (five) editorials in June. Please give me a lenient sentence! I've stopped uploading btw...
For the record, nobody knows yet how bad the drop in earnings will be...what if it's just 5%-10%? That's why we need to share as much earnings income as possible using big data to make informed decisions. As mentioned on my blog post (please don't be angry anti-SS mob), my ODDs are coming in at higher than pre-June, although more data is needed. In a few months we'll have a great idea of just how far we've lost out.
The real damage will likely come in January though when everybody is back at Level I and that's when, if it's not too late and the stats show that the drop is substantial (20%+ on average), we should all work together to deactivate then so it shows a huge huge drop on the first of the month. The goal is 10 million images deactivated...we can even have a hashtag #SS10million or something like that.
In your blog post you say youre not willing to shut off your port even for a week because you dont want to lose $100 after all your hard work. And theres an entire thread here of people reporting their huge drop in earnings. We dont need your six months of stats to see whats happening. Very few people are willing to lose tons of money over the next six months to take action in 2021. Im sure therell be a second wave of outrage then, but things are snowballing now and nows the time to strike, not in January when SS has had six months to pump up their library to twice the size with a huge flood of similars.

Honestly, I wouldn't keep taking the time to explain yourself. The people who are questioning you have already stated they don't plan to take down their ports or really do anything else remotely helpful to fight Shutterstock, but I'm sure they won't mind if all your hard work results in fairer royalties for them.

The best frame I think is that SS has taken the opportunity to cut their artists payments by a huge percentage in the middle of a pandemic while they have massive cash reserves and profits. Which is after all the truth and the simplest message for outsiders. IMHO opinion there is no better message than that of the single mother posted in another thread. If we replied to every SS twitter or facebook post with:
"I'm a single mother. I lost 2/3 of my income. My son and I will literally have nothing to eat." quote from Shutterstock artist after they cut their income in the middle of the pandemic When they post images celebrating mothers, post: "What about all the single mothers who can't support their families thanks to your pay cut for your artists?"
This.

But anyway, what is the idea, will it just be a collection of images to represent the talented artists who joined the coalition? What is the coalition planning to do then? Displaying them somewhere will not do anything on its own.
Okay, I see your point. What you are waiting for is the community to build its own stock agency and pull everyone onboard as exclusive, right?
Firstly, that's not what we are building in terms of this thread. Right now we are building an online home for stock contributors. That's what my team and I have volunteered to do, anyway. So you are quite right, we are not, at this point anyway, building an agency. We are building the site for an organisation that represents us as a first stage.
Is this the start of a fully contributor-owned agency where 80% or more of commissions are kept by contributors? I have no idea. It's certainly a possibility.
But I know where it starts.
It starts with us as a community pulling together right now as a group to send a message loud and clear not just to Shutterstock, but to every agency in the industry. That message is this:
As of this month, the global contributors are no longer yours to abuse with tinpot pricing and peanut royalties. For too long we have been pushed around like herd cattle milked daily for you to take all the cream.
We are not going to continue doing business like this. We are organising. We are working towards a unified front that represents our interests as contributors. And we will win, too, because really at $0.10 a download, what exactly do any of us stand to lose?
Sorry, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make, I don't mean building a contributor-owned stock agency. In fact I think we'd never be able to compete against the market leaders.
What I'm talking about was: why should Shutterstock care that we all got 'united' on a website with a gallery to show off our work? It wouldn't give us any negotiating power. The images would just be sitting there, except they're not for sale, it's just a gallery. What message does that even spread? Nothing much. Clients would never see it, let alone care about our little coalition. We'd be as powerless as we are here, talking amongst ourselves.
For any power play we'd need to collectively pull our images, but we have no idea how many people would join that plan.
Suppose the coalition becomes a starting point for a small movement, even then we'd be lucky if we got 1% of all contributors on board. And that won't be enough.
So I ask you, what's the plan of action once the website is up and running? What are we organising? What action is the 'unified front' going to undertake? Are we going to protest in front of the ShutterStock HQ, #ContributorLivesMatter?
One step at a time. And co-opting Black Lives Matter when people are literally fighting for their lives is so uncool.

I thought you were creating a new stock site. Why don't you do that instead?
Why dont you?
It's not something I can do on my own. If you are already organized you could do it as a group. A site made by contributors could be the solution to stop stock sites from reducing comissions.
Do a search for symbiostock here.

Shutterstock shenanigans: This morning I found an incorrectly spelled vector in the middle of page 1 in the most relevant search. I posted it to the coalition group. A half hour later I checked again and the image had been replaced with the word spelled correctly, and had shot up to the #2 spot in most relevant.

With a similar commission -0.09 $ FrPk- that SS, in FrPk you sell three times more than in SS. Most contributors, including myself, do more $$ on Frpk than SS so far in 2020. But Frpk barely accepts new contributors and rejects 90% of the photos you send...
Fantastic! Then Pablo Blanes has plenty of money to pay me for all the vectors of mine he stole. Would you like my PayPal account info so he can send the money directly?

Theres now a new post in the coalition group about someone leaving SS for Freepik. Its obvious the site is infiltrating and even managed to get one of their people as admin for a bit.

Freepik and ss now have much in common And yes we must turn off imagery faster, coz they profit 3 times faster.
I have seen now that the group https://www.facebook.com/groups/261369748434285 has a new administrator: a brand ambassador of Freepik!! Unacceptable for me.
The new administrator, Antonio Gravante, is now the new ex-administrator having flounced off in a huff. Seems this group's admins have a shorter life expectancy than football managers.
Give it a try and see how long you last.

" In your letter you promised that this new system was a + for level 5 or level 6 and that it would keep level 4 the same. Why are these point zeros so low? Why is the rpd of everyone declining? And why should we accept a double down on January?
Where in the email did it promise that it was a + for level 5 or level 6 and that it would keep level 4 the same? I saw no such promise.

For years Ive helped fight royalty cuts, written petitions, deleted thousands of images on multiple sites in protest, gotten on the phone with VPs from Shutterstock to insist they stop allowing keyword spamming, reached out to dozens of buyers to encourage them to license our work from agencies that give us better royalties, etc. I stopped uploading to Shutterstock more than a year ago over their skewed algorithms and have deleted thousands of vectors from my portfolio, and was planning to shut it off June 15 because I feel doing an action together in one day has more impact. When Jake asked for volunteers to help in the Facebook group I was the only one who responded.
My thanks for this is to have people here call me a hypocrite and repeatedly try to join the coalition on Facebook just to ask me why I havent shut down my port rather than doing something constructive.
But Im done now. Jakes on his own with 2,500 people who complain endlessly and attack other people but wont lend him a hand. Go scratch.
