Shutterstock.com / Re: Editorial on SS
« on: October 14, 2014, 03:27 »
With my sport editorial I follow this principle :

Right after the even is shot  :
 - put it to local country news agency
 - put it to alamy
 - put it to my own stock database website

 - after some time I put it to SS. Because news after one week is worth only for stock :) noone even rememer it. Maybe I loose some cash here because it is not distributed asap, but what I see, Im selling there images half a year after the event happened.

So this is just my preference, to avoid selling hot pictures for nothing. :)

Low number of SOD's lately. Does anyone else experience this as well?

Yes totally. It's almost like Shutterstock is giving new contributors better positioning over old farts like me to encourage & motivate them to upload new, fresh content so they don't just give up.  There certainly doesn't seem to be any commitment to the longer-term contributors who've shown their support and dedication over the last 7 years. Now, this is how I feel and what I believe is happening, but I have no proof other than my ALL OF A SUDDEN horrible sales over the last few months. Yea, a SOD here and there but the overall downloads, especially OD's is nearly non existent. I have over 3000 files on SS. Yesterday I made $1.24 in OD.
Honestly I think it is the market and supply. I don't think SS is handling positioning of suppliers etc. If I imagine me running an AD agency, I would love to search for new, fresh images for advertisements and not 3-4 years old ones. With increasing supply of images, it is natural that the old content is less salable until retro comes in fashion :)

A better way to plot this is by subs and then by OD.  A big spike in subs = very little jump in income. Are your subs and OD balanced? Meaning if you plot the number of dl's of each do they have the same or similar uptick?  Because what is killing me is the severe drop in OD's.
I dont get these too much often ,
July : 1 OD, 1SOD
August : 4ODs 1SOD
Sept : so far 2 ODs

so yes the spike was in subs.

I see that you already have Nik. Anyway, here is great article from Jase :

http://blog.chasejarvis.com/blog/2013/04/four-great-ways-to-get-the-look-of-film-in-the-digital-darkroom/

I use Nik, VSCO and Exposure 6. I have to say Exposure 6 mostly, VSCO only if I dont need edit in PS, and NIK from time to time :D

Hmm interesting. Would love to see some changes.

Hey everyone, any luck selling  on 500px prime something till now ?

They got another new licencing model https://prime.500px.com/pricing?utm_source=Prime&utm_medium=email%20A&utm_campaign=Web-Social%20License&utm_content=Top%20left%20CTA

Would be interesting what they actually really sell, if anything.

63
Interesting times with all of the sites jumping in. 500PX, FAA, and now Yahoo.

I remember reading that Flickr has been unprofitable with no direction. Now that it can make them money hopefully they'll see it as a core part of their business and focus on it.

And hopefully they come up with a reasonable model that will balance sales volume with a reasonable contributor percentage. If they just copy Getty's 20%-ish model I think they'll get a lot of angry responses.

I guess that the last piece missing is google. And then we will see :D

Macrografiks / How the sales are going on Macrografics?
« on: June 13, 2014, 08:14 »
Hi everyone, my wife would love to use Macrografiks for her macro shots of food etc.

Just wanted to ask for an update if there are any sales or not? So far I know that lot of these small agencies are not delivering any sales.

Thank you

My story with Fotolia

Uploaded 10 about a year ago. Felt appalled by a sense of greed and stopped.
In the beginning of April I thought what the heck and began to upload more, about 200 files.
End of April learned about the D-Day and I opted out of DPC (Don't Puff Cigars) and deleted all - but one.

This one I had a sale on the day after

Thinking of closing up the account but I have some money there and I hate to leave it, even if it is a small amount.

Today I got this in the mail

"Hello,

We're sorry to see you have recently removed some files from your portfolio.
If you change your mind please remember that you can just send us a ticket and we'll put all your files back online. However, this must be done within the next 30 days.
Also, we would like to remind you that you can choose to opt in or opt out your images from DPC in your photographers' parameters.
We hope to see you back soon and will be doing all to grow your income.

Kind Regards,

The Fotolia Team"

I would like to do the right thing and the whole situation feels rotten.

What to do Go for the trickle of pennies or stand up straight?
Put those images back and then not upload anymore?
 :-\

Received the same mail :) they are trying hard.

I replied to the spin doctor's reply on the KelbyOne Facebook page (took a screen shot in case it gets pulled down

....

I sent also a private msg to Scott, they probably have a contract already so they have to promote. But it would be good, if first they check what they are promoting. It is sad to sii it on Kelby.

Thanks Paulie I love the videos :D

Well, I had Windows (xp,2000, 7) the whole life, I have android phone and tablet. But I need new laptop for uploading editorial to news agency during the matches.

As I hate win8, I will buy now MacBook Pro 13 Retina (i5 2,4GHz/8GB/256GB/Intel Iris). Good performance for the money.

I will stay on android and Win on the workstation. No need to change that. If you are going to use standard photo tools like LR/PS/PhotoMech/. You dont have to have everything from apple :) I will backup to normal cheap NAS storage from seagate, I will use 24" BenQ monitor etc..

Just buy what you need and ask your self why you need that. Anything will deliver the goods today :)

Well here is my story. I shot last year lot of sport events, for the first time with official accreditation etc. All the clubs and associations asked for free images with link to my site and my name. Even though I am in microstock few years, it was new field, and I decided to give a lot of them, to make promo. Besides that I upload them to news agency.

To sum it up at the end of the year, news agency delivered profit of $11... yes 11 :). And all the exposure I got was more demand for shooting sport events for free.

So this year, I provide only images to my friends team. And the rest must pay. They dont like it, but I dont care. It is lot of hard work. I put price on every image. If they want it, they can have it. I would rather have 1 paying customer, than 10 teams promoting my free work.
