iStockPhoto.com / Re: How Are Your iStock Sales?
« on: February 25, 2015, 11:40 »
I don't earn much from IS, but last couple months sales have been up by quite a bit. Not sure why.

Out of all those images only 69 pages are "crap". Literally or course.

I'm out. Not a big earner for me in any event. I allowed some images for the test, which I now regret in principle.

Kudos for figuring this out! Way above my tech level, though. I bought a Camranger, more costly but within my limited tech know-how. Thanks for posting.

I looked into this once ... it is very confusing. You have to enter one of their competitions and if you are allowed in, you pay $50 to list one image with their RM. House contracts are a thing of the past as far as I can tell.

My guess is they are suing everyone and hoping for settlement money from the big players. They know they cannot get blood from a stone (i.e. money settlement from photog) but have to sue him to go after the biggies. That is the only way I could see a lawyer taking this case on a contingency basis. Hoping for a decent nuisance settlement to make them go away ( with a non-discolosure). Photog unfortunately is at ground zero for this. What a f-cked situation.

They have incredibly long review times.

136
They can take the cost of a photographer directly out of my tax payments.

137
The rate is likely tied to ratings and other performance indicators, so there will likely be a hit. Their short term borrowing costs would certainly be affected rapidly.

138
The lower rating means their cost of borrowing will go up making it even tougher for them. They either need to increase sales rapidly or increase margins. The easiest way to increase margins is to lower the acquisition cost of your inventory -- which is our content.

Nice to see you back Ron!

ARQ and Amazon Glacier sounds like a good option. The price of ARQ is now $40. I looked at Glacier before but interacting with if was cumbersome -- so ARQ would certainly make it a lot simpler.

Do you backup all your raw image from shoots or just the selected images. Right now I have multiple backups of all my finished images - which are TIFFS and the converted JPGS, but I only have one copy of the shoots on portable hard drives because of the amount of data.

143
I'm interested in finding an online backup as well. I don't want something that automatically syncs folders - just a vault. The problem for me will be uploading gigs of data ... which will take weeks. Also I wonder is how easily and fast the data can be downloaded. I'm out of the USA as well, so the hard drive option would not work for me.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Anybody know any Rasberries?
« on: December 16, 2014, 21:48 »
As alway, the test is: Would the raspberry recognize itself in the photo?  In this case it is a definite yes. I'm pretty sure they are of age, though. They appear to be quite ripe.

My guess is that Shutterstock would not make a settlement for that very reason.

It will likely mean more subscription sales. Give away free time limited subscription included with their cloud and offer a buy-up to include a full subscription. Perhaps more sales but will definitely be a low sub rates.

147
Some of the most successful photographers I know are mediocre or competent photographers at best but are incredibly good marketers. They all share one thing: An unshakable confidence that they are the best,  reasonable or not. When you are selling from that belief, others will often buy into it. A star is born.

Yes I unloaded some time ago as well and would like to see the images reviewed before newer content.

It's a real shame. Francisco did so many things right and was great to deal with. He just couldn't make it work unfortunately.

Typically firms do not invest the money they hold by extending accounts payable in investment instruments, but use the money as working capital to fund business operations where the return on investment is much higher than a short term instrument, (they hope) the idea being that you can earn more from funding business operations than a static rate of return from the bank.
