General Stock Discussion / Re: Instagram Still Usefull?
« on: March 19, 2018, 15:10 »
If you a looking for agency work it is the place to be. A very successful advertising photographer was just telling me that most of his new clients come from Instagram.

Canva / Re: Canva paid double times
« on: February 13, 2018, 16:42 »
I was paid this month for December earnings again, but not paid for actual January earnings. Since December was double I am not complaining but I am sure they will sort it out and claw it back at some point.

I have one and love it. The one issue right now is live view tethering is not working with Capture One. They say they will fix it in the next C One update (this is a big issue for me). Otherwise the camera is great and I would recommend it. Love the extra pixels.

Stocksy / Re: Call To Artists is Open!

There is no disrespect to applying photographers intended at Stocksy ... it is simply that there is a small, very diligent and hardworking editing team that take a lot of time to review a large number of applications thoroughly. Since there is a limited membership base, it is a tough process to select new members.

Adobe Stock / Re: Update your 2014 tax form
« on: December 20, 2017, 17:03 »
Matt when I click on the link nothing loads. All other links work. Does this mean my tax form is up to date?

Thnx

It might just mean that there is an issue with your browser. Shoot me an email with your Adobe ID and I'll take a look. Email [email protected]

Thanks Matt. I got it to work. The links on the left do not work but I realized there was a tax section on the main body when I scrolled down which worked.

Canva / Re: Contributor update about tax
« on: December 16, 2017, 10:26 »
Just found this thread and just noticed that they are withholding 30% of my earnings. On the site it says that they generate reports at the end of June. I never received a report in June 2017, and am wondering if anyone else did? Frankly I am not confident that even with a report I can effectively claim the amount and the accounting fees involved might exceed the refund. This sucks big time.

I received the survey as well. I have no idea what possible reason there could be to use SS to host your personal website when there are so many other good hosting options out there. I suppose if all you do is contribute to SS if might be an option.

I love C1. I switched from LR because of the superior tethering, but once I got a handle on the controls I find it much better than LR, except for archiving. I personally like the sessions. I shoot tethered to a laptop and mirror the session live to an attached hard drive. Since sessions are self-contained I then transfer it from the hard drive to my main computer. When I am finished editing and exporting I import the whole session into LR. Having a rigid naming convention on the sessions helps as well.

I have a fairly stagnant portfolio on Shutterstock but it produced a fairly consistent income .... until November when it crashed. Sales still way, way down.

Shutterstock.com / Re: November and December Drop in sales
« on: December 21, 2016, 07:46 »
November and December nose dived for me to a degree I have not seen before. I have read about the declines and have experienced some gradual decline, but this is the first time I have had sales almost completely stopped. There are a bunch or reasonable popular searches that my images come up right at the top so I cannot blame search. Just lack of sales and almost no ODs, SODs or whatever else they are called.

I don't contribute much to Shutterstock any more and glad I don't depend on it .... November earnings dropped 43% from October 2016 and 60% from November 2015.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Uber vs microstock
« on: October 30, 2016, 20:08 »
In Toronto Uber now pays for driver's commercial car insurance since the city passed a byline forcing drivers to have it. If they did not pay it, it would be uneconomical for drivers to work. Somehow in the stock photo business people carry on even if it is not economical. Defies logic.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock Royalty Change
« on: October 26, 2016, 14:50 »
I am just waiting for the point where photographers pay THEM a percentage for the privilege of selling their work. This is scraping so close to zero that it is insane. How can anyone produce reasonable work for these rates. They have effectively priced photographers out of the equation.

You can have all the personal taste and expertise .... but the true talent is knowing what buyers at companies and ad agencies are looking for. Stocksy has its finger on this vibe and has the results to prove it.

My guess is that if  Uber dropped the rates drivers receive as drastically as microstock companies have,  there would be zero Uber drivers left.

Old post alert. Dumped the tablet long ago FYI. Just could never get the hang of it.

I started out keeping detailed numbers on spreadsheets but eventually realized it wasn't worth my time. Paypal tells me how much I am payed by each agency, and each agency provides data on what is sold. Beyond that, it's not worth my time to track everything. Maybe I am just lazy but my time is limited and best spent shooting.
