iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock New Sub. Model Just Announced!
« on: March 03, 2014, 20:30 »
Because what the world needs is another low priced subscription model.

When I was a newspaper photographer, chefs were the worst people to work with in general. There were exceptions, and a few that were great, but overall I found it easier to do shoots with movie stars than chefs, even though they have less handlers. Likely the case here.

Notice received. Now on the six month payment plan. Feel like I am buying a new TV on the instalment plan.

The practice goes back forever. I used to buy stock occasionally from stock agencies and they would send me a whack of transparencies. We paid for what we used (and returned the transparencies). It's the way the business operates and to not allow ad agencies to download comps would be counter productive.

Thanks for posting Scott. I didn't realize SS was involved in this type of photojounalism.

My friend is using a Sony 7r. He was raving about it while shooting static subjects and then went on to use it shooting behind the scenes at the NYC fashion shows. I was considering going that way, but he said it was a real challenge (nightmare) shooting with it in a live situation and would not recommend it over a good DSLR.

It's a game of semantics -  partners or resellers. Years back I used to license photos with Gamma. If they had another agency sell an image for them (which I had to approve) Gamma got 50% and the other agency got 50%. I received my 50% (25% or the gross) of Gamma's take. Pretty simple math.  These convoluted partnership arrangements are just unfair to the photographer. I guess better quit living in the past!

General Stock Discussion / Re: What is your most selling image?

My best selling photos are ones that I hate to even look at. They sell - I cringe. Fortunately, I don't sell that many photos!

Photography Equipment / Re: Wacom tablet - need pro version?
« on: February 12, 2014, 11:17 »
Bought it, used it for a while, but in the end I am back to my mouse. I think the problem is I do not have the time for the learning curve. it was slowing me down too much.  Maybe when I have some time I will go back and give it another try.

It can take a little while to get the muscle memory going (and it does help if you just go cold turkey). I hope you give it another try at some point because it really is a huge difference. Or just switch to Lightroom for all your processing where I'd expect you'd not notice the problems with a mouse as much :)

I use both Lightroom and PS Jo Ann, in that order so I'm sure the tablet would be an asset. I will have to give it another try when I have time.

123RF / Re: zero view after one month
« on: February 12, 2014, 10:34 »
I tried them for a year, but sales were so low that I gave up on them. I know other people do well there, but even matched against my modest income from other sites, the monthly revenue was so low it wasn't worth my time. Free images -- nope!

I understand all of that and report my earnings and expenses, etc., however, I still don't see why I would specifically need a separate Paypal account rather than use my personal account. I'm Canadian so there will be some differences in reporting, but I'm unclear. If my income from stock increased by a significant amount, I would likely channel it through a separate company, but not sure it is necessary at this point.

Being fairly new to stock ... can someone fill in the blanks for me. Why can I not use a personal account to receive payments? Are there legal reasons or is it an accounting issue?  Thnx.

Incredibly difficult to upload and keyword, the most confusing interface I have encountered, refunds that I cannot fathom. They do not make dealing with them easy! I have some photos there and have made a small amount of money and would likely upload more ... if they just made the process easier.

Off Topic / Re: Fired!

We are in an unfortunate profession where there are no entries barriers, such as law, medicine or engineering. Anyone can buy a camera and be a photographer as opposed to buying a drill and doing dental work. Then again, I have done my own plumbing work and have learned to hire a pro after so nasty mistakes!

No sales but I am still uploading. These guys are straight shooters and have done everything right. I'm really hoping they make it work.

FYI -  I bought the smallest (and cheapest $99 @ Amazon) Wacom Intuos tablet. It's more than enough for me for retouching photos. Still trying to master it and have only been using it when a photo requires a lot of detailed work. Even then I'm not sure it's any easier than the mouse, but that could be my lack of skill with it at the time.

Try to use Greasemonkey.

Does the script still work? Can you select individual files or does it delete whatever is on the page?

« on: January 12, 2014, 14:54 »
I've been trying to delete some images from iStock. It worked for one image. Now after I click on administration I am sent to the buyer's version of the image with no options that I can see to deactivate. (Yes I am logged in). Does anyone know what I might be doing wrong?
