« on: July 12, 2013, 09:52 »
I agree, my image sales in the main collection are up, but the dollar amount is down. So really the price changes has allowed us to provide buyers with more image for less money...the sales aren't up enough to even level the $ out. So all in all it appears at this stage to be a hit on non-exclusive content. Hopefully things pick up, it is still early.

A bit off topic, my exclusive sales seem to be strong so far. July seems to be my BME already. So all in all, I can't complain too much...yet

My PP stats for may are still not showing up. Is this normal?? :o
I find it very very annoying that there is no way to see the sales other then what IS reports you. I still havent seen any PP sales, but I dont even know if I have actually sold files on Thinkstock. And I cant say I trust them  very much. I dont even trust them to know how to turn on their PC in the morning.

I agree.

My sales have actually been strong lately...I've only been in the microstock game for two years or so, but things seemed to have picked up the past month or so

ah...is that why they still have a highest rated in the trends? The inspectors get to rate files?

Did they bring ratings back? What a useless system

I don't see why it can't and shouldn't happen in real-time. God forbid if they put some money back into fixing their dated system especially now with the higher volumes

I had zero confidence in their reporting system before...I never thought I could have negative confidence  :o. I always questioned how they know anything is accurate when there are so many bugs and broken things there. Hard to have faith in IS these days.

Well.....  not picking any individual......

I did a search for "arkangel" (a recent submission that probably would have got in anyway under the former soviet republic) and sorted by newest.  I still can't believe my eyes...

Wow, what piss poor inspectors allowed those in...technically they seem okay, but subject-wise...what. I still see folks getting rejections in their forums...I'd like to see what they reject now if those are an example of what they allow.

Yeah, sorry, I don't see how that can be addressed. In addition, aren't the circumstances for video and illustrations different from those for photos?

True, I think I was thinking this was related to collection changes and not the photo price drops...although some of my exclusive content was dropped to main collection and now sells for less...

These types of polls tend to miss those of us that are both exclusive in one category and indie in another...ie someone can be exclusive photographer and indie illustrator...someone with a foot in both doors might be able to add to this. I am both indie and exclusive in that regard.

With that said, my exclusive sales seem the same(not including Getty sales as they haven't been calculated yet). My indie sales I have seen a rise in IS downloads and that has brought in some more $$, but nothing significant and possibly a temporary reaction to the changes (does not include PP sales for same reason as Getty sales)

Don't worry they will figure out a way to pass $$$ on the extra man hours being used to the contributors...ready for 12%? ;P

I guess i can no longer take pride in my high acceptance rating :(

I guess this all brings up another point. IT folks aren't developers. In my world the two are separate. The developers create and the IT folks keep the hardware and software running. I assume IS lacks not only managements approval to update, they may lack decent developers as well. I am a developer in my day job. The Pp payments should be no more than an automated click or even a timed trigger. The system wasn't built to work with such things. Decent developers could still figure out a way to automate the process...like said before you not only need the developers, you need time and money.

264
All true. It would amaze me that someone had any confidence in iStock even before this. All in all I don't feel it is a conspiracy to keep anyone's money...it is human error due to their dated process to update their dated system.  It sucks that this time it has delayed money...in all honestly the iStock staff may be open to such issues as they help their case for a upgrade framework. I would be surprised if iStock developers haven't been trying to get an overhaul approved. The bean counters in suits typically don't see a problem until it effect their pockets...sadly this only effect ours and will be chalked up as an inconvenience...

They really need some consistency...the buyers aren't so shelter from the contributors that they are oblivious. Eventually they will share our perception unless something changes

265
I think it has to do more with a dated system then incompetent staff. All the recent changes and ingestion may be too much for their system. For some reason when I think of their servers I see a bunch of band-aids all over it...hmm that might make for a good stock image ;)

All in all it shows that there infrastructure can't handle their current load. I doubt they are willing to put the money into overhauling it, but it doesn't mean it doesn't need it.

It seems they run thus stuff live...you'd think a company of their size has an internal test server that is a clone of their system

working in the technology field for over 20 years it is not uncommon for companies to ride their old systems way beyond what they should do. All about keeping costs down...

Yeah, I completely get that.
Just offering up some insight into the many technical issues we have had over at iStock.

Isn't this all old news by now? Yuri isn't a God...he is in for the same reason we all are.

Everyone here has turned iStock into this mythical beast that devours us poor little contributors. Yes they have made some odd moves and we can speculate all day, but it is all out of context. You'd be a fool to think they are making this and any other decisions on a whim and prayer. Yes they are taking risks, but they have data and reasoning behind their moves.  And is it really a shock they are looking after their own interests? The reality is we all have a choice to continue play or not. Don't think for a second that any other agency can't be bought.

Yuri made a business decision. I wish him the best.

I think we can complain all day (in fact we do), but I encourage everyone to go out and continue to learn and make better content...or bail out of the game.

In a recent interview with Brice he stated that iStock has grown much larger than the framework it was built from intended. With that I feel stems all of the technical problems. They are adding and bandaging, but in reality it should be rebuilt to accommodate all the changes over the years as well as the larger collections. Not sure why they can't rebuild and still keep the current one alive...maybe they are for all we know. Or maybe they are just milking what they can out of iStock before calling it quits...I guess we'll see.

refunds for digital files is absurd. There is really no way to constantly police the file after it is purchased.

Thanks for sharing.I always felt Dells were priced a bit high, but knowing this I may try Dell next time I need a new machine.

I thought Getty was 20% regardless of exclusivity... Getty sells the content at higher rates...I earn more when stuff sells on Getty

Overall, what is hurting photography and even the design industry is that everyone now has access to the tools...hardware and software that used to be pricey and not available to the average consumer is easily obtainable. You used to have to go to specialized schools or become an apprentice to learn how to use these tools, now you have tutorials and training online and freely available to everyone. Things are changing...you can no longer rely on just the know-how, you have to truly bring something unique to the table. You have to bring what both comes naturally and through your own personal experiences. This is something that cannot be easily replicated.
