Newbie Discussion / Re: Best site for RM
« on: August 29, 2013, 00:58 »
depending on what you shoot, alamy could work for you, but it's a hassle to keyword and upload, and you need 1000s of images to make a few sales.

102
It's a good analogy, however, D800 catches all light with the same type of pixels, whereas Foveon sensors use three layers of pixels, each reacting to different color.  The bottom layer records red, the middle layer records green, and the top layer records blue.
To confuse it even further, in practical terms, the 46MP raw image translates into a very sharp 15MP JPG or TIF image which would be equivalent to about 28MP taken with a conventional CMOS sensor.

I agree with you that today there are plenty of new APS-sized pocket cameras that will produce pretty good image quality without the quirks of Sigma. After all, DP2M Model is now almost two years old.

RGB .. means nothing .. these CCDs record a precise range of light emissions, you could make CCDs using 7-8 different light ranges instead of RGB and then make a conversion via software to sRGB, same same ..

what makes the difference here is probably Foveon producing a better gamut with single RGB layers than any other sensor, i don't say the difference is big, maybe 10-20% but it's noticeable especially in some samples i've seen.

it's not so revolutionary actually, even Sony sold "3 CCD" camcorders ages ago, the concept was different but the idea not so much ..

the big limit of these sensors is always the operating space, canon and nikon should seriously think about 72mm or even 144mm sensors as 35mm is already pushed to the limit.

they're very optimistic considering the incredible level of piracy and impunity in China.

Image Sleuth / Re: Photo to Illustration
« on: August 27, 2013, 08:31 »
YES ! it's a ripoff and if you ask any illustrator in many cases they start from a photo !

however, it's a very gray area as the illustrator didn't do a carbon copy of the image but he changed the orientation of the faces and a few other details.

besides, it's being used for a "vanity press book" that probably sold what .. 5 copies ? vanity books are self-printed and self-distributed, he might even have lost money with this illustration.

105
to me the EOS-M looks like a much better deal that the Sigma.

i will give Sigma another chance with their next-gen camera eventually.

as for the Foveon : i'm telling the same things since a long time, great IQ and great sharpness is only achievable with a big sensor outputting a resized image ... Sigma gives a you great 16MP but it needs to mess with a 46MP raw input to achieve that.

you could do the same with a D800E and resize to 12MP .. try it !

no one will ever make big bucks from services like Instagram or Flickr, the money is just not there and nobody found a better working business model so far in the last 15 yrs.

the ugly truth is no one would use the internet if everything was pay-per-use.

i remember very well at the beginning they tried everything to get people buy a 33.6 modem, even giveaways and free unlimited connections with free email and all (AOL and many others), they only got troubles despite making billions with the Ponzi scheme running up in wall street during the "dot-boom".

the money was in providing services, consulting, custom software, infrastructure, hardware.
that's where the money is, not in photo sharing whatever.

i know, 500px now got backed by VC for a few millions but it's still a Ponzi .. they aint making any money, their goal is to be sold at a premium to the next su-cker, that's what VC is all about, not real profits or real companies with stable business models.

i mean look at the e-commerce world leader, Amazon.com, it's now making profits finally but it took them almost 20 yrs to reach the point where they are now and yet they're very small in net terms compared to a traditional distributor.

people have this illusion that the internet allows to cut the distribution costs to the bone and therefore to make bigger profits.

but it's wrong, it just cuts profits even more.
apple is making a sh-itload of money selling hardware for instance.

google selling advertising and services.

ebay selling classifieds and ecommerce services.

the list goes on, none of the top tier Nasdaq companies is actually selling free photo sharing services unless we take FB as a photo sharing site ?

the phenomenal success of Youtube never ever translated in phenomenal profits, quite the opposite only recently the managed to make some small profits out of it because their volumes are now so big that a few hollywood majors decided to jump ship and using Youtube as a promotional tool.

it's all indirect, nobody is making money selling the actual digital product they produce or distribute.

i see the same fate for the poor musicians, they will have to make good songs and give them away for free in order to make some money selling t-shirts ! and so their business will be in merchandising, not in music unless they also make live gigs.

« on: August 26, 2013, 11:37 »
any modern Nikon has AUTO-ISO and you could also tell the maximum ISO you want and the minimum shutter speed.

if noise is still too bad, downsize to 12MP.

At least they admit it and offer a way to remove images -

being hosted on Blogspot maybe all you need is to report this site to Google as piracy is against their TOS.

considering how much PS and LR are of critical importance nowadays i would rather buy Adobe and stick with a cheaper camera than wasting weeks or month trying free alternatives, GIMP in particular is horrible, not even on par with PaintShopPro.

forget it, these softwares are too complex, nobody will make good clones for free.

General Stock Discussion / The future of Stock is ..
« on: August 24, 2013, 10:12 »
guys, the future of stock in general is bright and shining, more and more big companies like FB and Google are embracing STOCK suppliers.

this is a GREAT sign, consider that before they freely allowed piracy so from any perspective it's better than nothing.

my opinion ? don't expect to get rich, but soon the pool of potential buyers could double or triple or even more.

no matter if micro/RF or macro/RM .. the demand for good photos is rising despite the zillions of cr-ap snapshot on free sites.

be in the right place at right time ... i might be 100% wrong, but i smell something BIG coming in.

it starts with FB and by domino effect it ends with ...

112
i can't see what the fuss is all about.

SS just signed a distributor deal with FB, so what ?

that's what agencies are supposed to in order to expand their market share, it only shows that SS salesmen have more balls than the competition.

of course what is good for SS is not necessarily good for us, or it can be even a stab in the back, but in this specific scenario it looks good to me, as others pointed out already we're talking about thumbnails, not full size images.

find me another agencies willing to monetize thumbnails, can't remeber a single one.

113
i see what i mean and i'm sure there are many fans out there but it's just not for me, too many limitations, i mean it's not even a real pocket camera if you consider you can drain the battery shooting just 100 photos.

as for quality : to me it looks the Foveon manages to use a bigger gamut than the other sensors, that's why the images look better with better shadows and highlight and contrast and all, but it's just about colors ... how will they ever push the sensor further we don't know .. to me it looks like this has been pushed even too far and that would explain why the camera is so slow due to pre-processing and post-processing of such an amount of raw data.

we're indeed mediocre, i've seen amazing stuff done by famous illustrators all using photos, brushes, textures, Archicad and Photoshop, just .. wow .. F ing brilliant, that's ART 100%, and the techniques they use are quite complex, not suitable for the average random stocker.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Anyone selling on Smugmug?
« on: August 22, 2013, 12:55 »
no matter which site you use, you will not make a single sale if you can't promote your site.
all they do is selling a turn-key portfolio/e-commerce site with all the bells and whistles.

Off Topic / Re: A must READ article by Zack Arias
« on: August 21, 2013, 22:49 »
nice article but talent doesn't grow on trees, no matter if the guy now will burn his Xbox and work 24x7 on shooting bands.

americans love these inspirational things, the slogans like "man up!" or "the I CAN attitude".

well, it may work for some but not for all .. and he's right suggesting to focus only on one of two things, too many try to do everything from landscape to fashion to lifestyle shots but you better stick to what you're better at.

as for the "plenty of suckers having success", yes especially in fine-art photography you'll be amazed why what kind of junk is being sold and being awarded, but i noticed they all specialize in their field, b/w or dreamy landscapes or portraits or whatever, none of them try to be "complete", not at all, and maybe actually because of technical limitations, because they can't do anything else but the one single thing they do good is pretty good.

119
That tip is free, istock. Want more, you can hire me as a consultant. ;)

excellent analysis.

but when i was a corporate drone i quickly realized how detached from reality is the management chain in most of the cases.

for starters, we can't expect bad managers and executives to realize or even to accept and admit they're not good enough for their task, never gonna happen, ever !

besides, the root cause is the upper management, the ones who hired these bad apples in the first place.

i could make a long list of formerly successful IT companies that went down the drain because of bad management and lack of innovation or all of these things together.

and even now, so many investors are skeptic about Apple being run by Tim Cook for instance, and apple shares went from 600$ to 4-500$ in a couple years with everyone pointing fingers at Cook claiming he's unfit for the job and he's not a creative or a visionary and the new products are boring and bla bla bla.

fact is, Cook is delivering, but iStock is falling and they seem to have no emergency plan to recover.
maybe they're panicking or maybe it was their plan from the start ? we don't know but to me it seems obvious they're clueless and have no idea how to compete with SS and regain market share.

they just milked the cow while they could and now the party is over, you can bet their executive are now blaming each others and already seeking greener pastures, it will be tough for the new management to replace the old one and make a sudden U-turn, too little too late .. see what happened to nokia and blackberry.

« on: August 21, 2013, 21:53 »
I don't understand, why didn't the Samsung judges use Tineye (or whatever) to do a quick search? Samsung don't really care either, they're only in this for the publicity, they need to be publicly shamed over this also.

I don't get the feeling that they're ashamed at all. Maybe they're shameless?

I thought Asian leaders are supposed to be personally ashamed whenever they bring shame on themselves and their companies/countries.

It will be a shame if the original photographer doesn't receive more than an apology from Samsung. They owe him that and more.

in the past photo contests required PRINTS and the finalists were also eventually required to provide the RAW files.

but this contest was just requiring JPGs posted on instagram so of course anyone can cheat.
who has the time to double check ? and services like TinEye are very very limited, many photographers use Flash to display images for instance and so they can't be found on TinEye or Google images but thieves can steal doing screenshots.

yet another proof that it's safer to use watermarks !
the original author posted the photo on Flickr and 500px, that's where it was stolen.

on the other side, it proves that you still need a pro photographer to stand out from the instagram/FB crowd.

as for the photo in question, i can't see what's so artistic or special about it ! a guy riding a moto with trees and fog in b/w .. ok so F ing what ?

+1, but let's hope there's an official shoot released at some point.

it's a worrying sign, and i see less and less people able to judge a good photo from an ugly snapshot, for them they're all "good enough".

123
EOS-M looks good, i'll soon try it out in my local camera store, however i've still the feeling all these pocket cameras are expensive toys and that it will take another 2-3 yrs before they reach maturity, what i've seen so far is quite disappointing compared to the experience you get even with the cheapest entry level DSLR.

my biggest issue is the grip : these cameras are just too small, they've zero grip in my hand, the Sony NEX especially, beautiful but what the he-ll ... too delicate and too pricey anyway.

and of course the battery life is short as the batteries are as abig as the ones used in cell phones but the LCD screen must be always on as there's no viewfinder.

besides, these cameras were meant to be a solution for the need of something pocket-sized providing simil-DLSR quality but while they're certainly small enough they're far from being "pocket" !

so, too many compromises for my tastes, i'll wait some time and maybe take the next generation of Sony NEX or Nikon 1/J1 series.

however, i've not been impressed by the nikons and they've also lamenting poor sales, rightly so in my opinion, the samples images i've seen are nothing special and the camera feels cheap and plastic.

i've already had a Coolpix break down and i finally thrown it away last year, out of warranty, well .. F nikon .. i'm not gonna waste more money on P&S anytime soon, i've a sh-it Fuji now worth 80$ go figure ... great to make snapshots around and the zoom broke down as well recently .. now is it me having bad karma or these modern P&S are designed to last no more than 6 months ? my nikon Speedlight got water inside and broke down as well, repaired for 50$, what the F !

The problem for contributors is getting a fair share of the profits but that's the same for content providers in lots of online industries.  I'd be more concerned about the traditional sites.  I don't understand the Getty finances, how much are the hedge funds taking out of them?  If they're being run by the same people that are wrecking istock, what's their future prospects?  Will alamy carry on cutting commissions and lowering prices?

with the actual trend it's gotta be more and more difficult for suppliers to stay afloat, how will small stockers with a few 1000s images in portfolio compete with all the image factories and the global oversupply ?

traditional RM agencies are not in the same business, they're not selling the same image 100 times or even just twice, you shoot a large set and you're lucky to sell once but the payout will justify the production costs, you can also upload in other agencies including micros and see what sticks on the wall, i'm all for giving micros a chance and a few leftovers of course, many times it's quite hard to know what will sell or not.

125
it would be more logic to launch a whole new collection with low priced images rather than polluting the main collection with promotional deals.

i mean, they finally recognized that 50% of their images never sold once, so what ? are they sure price is THE root cause ?

by the way, they can only blame themselves for this, no one forced them to price every image at the same level, they do that because it would be confusing and expensive to manually stick a different pricing but they could allow authors to do it just as it happens in many other digital stores.

they're losing a sh-itload of money using flat prices, it's great for buyers but a ripoff for contributors and agencies too.
