Print on Demand Forum / Re: Zazzle cancellations
« on: June 07, 2014, 15:23 »
Yes i had that quite a few times, especially for business cards, not sure if those are just careless people who entered their details wrongly and have to cancel and redo. Anyone knows if customers have to physically return the products to get refund? In the end , though, they always ended up buying the product. For some people i can see that they cancel the first purchase at usual price and bought the later one with a discount, or a referral. In general i dont really care much, it's Zazzle who loses when this happens, not me.

I guess it's safest to buy directly from artists/photographers. As you are here, you may want visit this thread where there is a list of direct websites by members here:

Hmm, i didn't have any problem requesting payment with paypal. Requested on the 31 may,  got paid June 2. No problem here.

From Dreamstime? Did you have to contact them for the option?

Yes, from DT, and no i didn't have to do anything unusual. The Paypal option is no longer on the the top, but it's been that way for maybe a couple of months already.

Unusually terrible month, and only at SS. 20% down from April, 15% down from last May. The last week of May was the same as the week of last Christmas, which is the worst of the whole year.  Very unusual for me as they are pretty consistent until now.

Good that i see this thread. I just got 2 Novel use sales reported yesterday  and I have opted out last year April (more than one year now). So i checked the status, and it was correct, i was opted out. The only thing i could think of is that these sales take more than a year to be reported? maybe not too unusual  with Alamy?

After much consideration i have opted out. This is because many of my chosen files are good sellers, but mainly, it's because i dont know if the deal would turn out good or bad for me. I am not saying DT is misleading or something, simply, a good deal for them may not be a good deal for me, just  like, a good deal for many contributors here may not be a good deal for me.
Having said and done that, i must say I will support DT when whenever i could, not on this one as i do not have enough information. I haven't lost trust in them. I really dont understand the hostility in this thread toward DT. They are treated exactly the same as FT with DPC deal. I dont think DT belongs to the same group as FT, DP and IS, or not yet anyway. They dont deserve this hostility. I am afraid, at this rate, at some point even Pond5 would be on the chopping board. Actually, there are people already complaining about Pond5 here, which i dont really understand. There is no "perfect" agency. It's impossible to please everyone and stay in business at the same time. We should see what is the most important things we need from agencies. For me, it's the trust.

Or maybe Zazzle? not sure about quality ( I do sell lot of print there though but never seen one myself), but it's definitely cheaper, and it's in California.

White House Custom Colour is good. I have it integrated with my Photodeck site, not had any order yet but they printed free sample and it looks great. They are in Texas but shipping any where in the US takes the same time with next day or two-day shipping.

Let's all take a breath...

The email said "small scale beta test program."

When anything in the IT world is being rolled out it gets beta tested to a small group before it goes to the masses.  And typically the people beta testing the software do not pay for it.

This is an evaluation period.  Picture an ice cream supplier giving one of those tiny taster spoons to the food buyer at Wal-Mart.  The supplier isn't going to ask Mr. Purchasing Executive to pony up a quarter before he gets his taste.  The supplier knows that if Wal-Mart likes what it tastes, it could result in an enormous, game-changing order.

I believe in DT.  They have been good to me over the years (and of course, I have been good to them.)  If this came from an agency I believe is shady, I would take a skeptical view of this.

DT has a BIG fish on the line, trying to reel it in and create an potentially enormous payday for all of us.  Think for a moment before you try to cut that line.

As for me, DT selected a HUGE amount of my images to run in this test, and I'm ALL IN.

The rest of you can demand your quarter for the taster spoon.

I agree. We should look at the history of the agency to make a decision. It's certainly bad time as we are all too jumpy after recent events. I must be one of the most jumpy one, deleting my port from both FT and DP,  so fast that i practically donated to DP about 30$ that got stuck as unpaid payment even though i could just wait for a few days to get to the payout threshold, but i couldn't wait. But this is because they both have very shady, abusing history.
Dreamtimes on the other hand has so far been a fair agency. And the tests like this, i am sure those shady agencies have been doing all the times without us even know about them. DT could have just kept silence about it. How would you even find out?
I am afraid that our reaction may actually push those few good agencies  to the point to hide from us. Things like DPC is bad enough for good agencies to stay in business. We should fight bad agencies by supporting the good ones. I am not saying that this test will turn out to be something good for us, but i am willing to give them the benefit of doubt.

I got it too. I am not too far away but still. They should have done something online like a webminar or something, that would be more efficient.

From my own experience:
Facebook is useless for my business. It's also not easy to use. My audience on FB is totally irrelevant. And you have to constantly update status, your audience decreases if you dont.
On the other hand Youtube is great, it brings me traffic, sales and also increasing income from ads. Lots of tools that help you to increase your RELEVANT audience.  Also, once a video become more or less popular, it will take care of itself, you dont have to do a thing, your audience increases without you doing anything.

I only upload half resolution so not sure if my experience applies to you. I do notice that the first few days the playback does not always look OK. You can, however, change the setting on playback video - the tool (nut) icon on the bottom right of the video to the highest quality (480p). After a week my footage look good even on big TV screen. Also to note that the quality of playback video is dependent of internet speed of the viewer computer.

General - Stock Video / Re: Clipcanvas shutting down?
« on: January 29, 2014, 11:34 »
For me it's slow in payment and review but it's alive, better than Revo. In fact, for the review i had to write to them after a few months, they profusely sorry and approve right away. Looks like it happens again now. For the payment it become a norm of about 2-3 months delay, but they sell and they pay. Recent sales are pretty good thanks to price increase. I do get newsletter occasionally. I think they are really nice people and just having technical issues. I would continue to support them.

Username may or may not be changed depending on agency, but for many of them (SS, FT for example) you can change the credit line/business name and that is what buyers see and credit you, so that should be good enough. You can also add it in a logo and  place in your profile picture. Many agencies let you add your website to your profile too.

Take videos if you can, much less supplied and will sell. A must : aerial view from a seaplane, choose a clear day, though. Zoom in or out from a single island, dolphin watching (you will see lots of them). If you can take good photo in really low light of stars, the night sky is amazing. I am no photographer, but got some amateur shots sold (of single island) , didn't think of taking videos then, was a big regret.  In any case, enjoy, it's a great way to spend Christmas, i am jealous :)
Can we use D90 for video stock ?

Cant answer that question, sorry, as i said, i am no photographer and know nothing  about camera, maybe you can ask in Pond5 forum, i have a 5DII and i use mostly automatic setting and i just do videos for fun mostly when travelling and they pay off half of expenses within a few years. If it can shoot HD it should be OK i guess.

I'd love to visit the Maldives, and I'd try to get some blue water and sandy beach pics while there, maybe some global warming sorts of things too, since they are pretty much screwed if sea level rises.

You need to hurry, it does sink slowly, and it really deserves the name they advertise as "the last paradise on Earth" . I have been to the Caribbean too and i must say, IMO, it's nothing compared to Maldives.

Bad month, 30% down from October. Historically it had always been my best month of the year with about +20% over October every year before.

Hi there,

I am a founder of PhotoDeck and this thread was brought to our attention by a member. Thank you for your interest in our service!

To answer a question raised above: we don't actively promote our members' websites / content. Being direct and honest is very important to us, so I thought I'd start with that.

We focus on what we do best, which is providing the best possible websites to professional shooters who (we assume) know how to run their business. Web hosting and stock selling require very different skillsets, and I don't know of any company who can honnestly tell they're good at both. That's also why we don't take a commission on sales, that wouldn't be fair in our view.

Asmai has a strategy to get buyers on her site, that's the first important thing. The second is making sure that the buyers that end up on your site are happy with what they see: both content and experience. We can certainly help (a lot) with #2, but not with #1.

I'll check the thread again tomorrow ;)

I know you guys didn't do vectors when you first launched. Was that still not an option and/or was it in the works? Just curious.

+1

Photodeck is very listening ! I am sure if you guys chime in here for vector format, we would have it pretty soon :)

After all that the first site that offers video (and it works great!)

interesting thread. I am also for last 8 month in photoshelter with just couple of sales but there is no lack of traffic but as the others said above, most of them are useless and hardly any of them probably turning into customer. But again, getting so many traffic is also 1st step before getting sales and yes i used to do blogging etc for 1st 1-2 months and they did attract many people but just visitors i believe no customers. Then i left blogging. No other promotion other than that. I am now not sure whether i should continue with photoshelter or any of other self hosted sites because i have really no time for promotions etc. But i must say that i faced no glitch bug or any other site related problems with photoshelter. Would like to hear more about photodeck.

I can see what you mean, i cant possibly do something that doesn't bring results right away (i am pretty much impatient). I just started blogging and got some traffic to my site, no sale from that yet, so i thought, i should do something that does not waste my time. I tried to blog about things that people do need to read anyways, and i already cash in from ads on my blog, not much yet, but it keeps me going as i dont feel totally doing things for nothing.

The photodeck interface is definitely more friendly for buyers. Also, it gives you lots more flexibility in licensing types, payment processors, pricing, custom pages, ...One big thing about photodeck is great customer service, fast and personalized. And of course, no commission helps a lot, especially when you start to get lots of sale :)
