iStockPhoto.com / Re: How much do you like Istockphoto?

Well, of the 12 agencies I submit to, iStock counts for 37% of my revenues...

StockXpert.com / Re: Bad things about to happen ...
« on: November 14, 2009, 15:02 »
I did a search on nov 11 (cargo container) and it showed 108 pages (60 photos per page) and many of mines were there.

Same search today brings only 46 pages, without any of mine.  So I'm out!

But the strangest thing is that it also bring many doubles.  Maybe they showed also on nov 11, but I didn't notice.  So I guess that they merge two or more photo banks...

I agree that a photographer should have the right to shoot whatever he wants, but if a stupid officer ask you if you plan to sell your photos to Al Qaeda, just say no!

It is not a problem of law enforcement, we are here in presence of two stupid guys provoking each other!

Claude

55
hmmm
Stupid and arrogant officer...
but to me this photographer was not taking pictures; he was clearly provoking the officer!

So by acting like this he is not helping us photographers!  He is not fighting for the freedom of speech or whatever, he is trying to attract people on his website/blog/whatever site.

What a waste of time and energy!

Canon / Re: cheap mount rings How risky is it???
« on: October 28, 2009, 17:32 »
This is exactly the ring I bought 4 or 5 months ago.  Can't remember the price paid but it was around 20$ so I guess it's the same quality...

I did a comparaison of this collar (for my 70-200F4L) and the one of a friend of mine (a canon OEM made for his 70-200 F2.8L) and quality is really good.

The screw is a little less smooth but the main diff is in the lining inside the ring.  Mine is made of some kind of velvet and his is a kind of teflon, which is much more soft on the lens.

So if you use it to flip the camera from horizontal to vertical position, you have to take a little more care to avoid scratching your lens' frame.

Overall, highly recommended at that price!  I don't regret it.  In fact, I also bought from the same seller few days after the ring for the 100mm macro.

Does anyone one if the Canon EOS 5D Mark II shoots interlaced or progressive?

I looked in the manual but couldn't find the information.

Thanks,
Robert

1080p, progressive.

You can read more detailed specifications about this camera here: http://www.usa.canon.com/uploadedimages/FCK/Image/White%20Papers/EOS%2050D%20and%205D%20Mark%20II%20WP2.pdf

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon EOS 7D spotted in the wild

You're right!

And it amazes me how Canon and Nikon uses almost same denomination... One day one or the other will have to change his system...  Using the name 7D could be a (small) step in this direction!

well it is coming from some pretty reliable sources this time.  I think it might be true.  If it has an on board flash it might be placed somewhere between the 5D mark II and the 50D which would make sense according to their naming scheme of the higher the number the 'cheaper' the camera.

The denomination 7D would be a logical step from the 50D.  Remember that Canon had already a 60D many years ago and going into the range of the 80 or 90D would be a littlebit confusing vs Nikon

Off Topic / Re: Swine flu
« on: August 09, 2009, 20:31 »
My friend, a doctor, reminded me that something like 15,000 people die every day in North America from the "flu".  H1N1 is getting a lot of press, but it has not caused many deaths.

That is a lot of people my friend... 15000 a day is 5 475 000 a year!  ;)

But I agree that regular flu kills much more people that this Swine flu... untill now...

Veer / Re: Veer - maximum file sizes
« on: July 20, 2009, 20:05 »
I uploaded via HTTP few 14-17Mb photos without any problems...

(in fact, StockXpert has a limit of 16 mb per photos... but this is another story!)

Please please tell me that Police Officers are not that dumb to think that a terrorist or a thief or whoever with bad ideas would go out in the street taking pictures of his target with a big DSLR...  With all the phones and P&S these days, one can take all the pictures he wants without being noticed.  Not to mention Google Earth and such...

So for some more security, should they stop and arrest anyone using a cellphone?

Updated yesterday:
quote:
To All Non U.S. Submitters:

We thank you for your patience while we have taken time to carefully design a new Tax Center, in which you will find detailed information on tax matters for non U.S. submitters. We will be launching the Tax Center inside our Submit site soon, and we will send you an email announcement when it has been launched.

We also want to assure you that we will not begin withholding any taxes until after the Tax Center launch, and after you have been given a chance to determine which forms you need to comply and can begin that process. No one should submit any forms to the IRS until we have provided the additional instructions.

We apologize for the delay in providing you more specific instructions but we are using this time to consolidate everything you may need in a single location.

Again, thank you for your patience.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Do you shoot tethered
« on: July 07, 2009, 17:11 »

No. You connect the camera with an USB to your computer and the shots are directly downloaded to the computers hard drive. You can check the results almost immediately. You don't have to shoot many gigabytes of images just to find out that the third one was okay and the rest just extra work. You can also easily correct some details in the image instead of cursing afterwards.

I use a few years old MacBook and Canon DPP, it takes just a few seconds to preview a 5D mk II RAW file.

Canon has an utility that act as a remote for your EOS.  With it, not only can you preview your shots on your pc screen, but you also can get full access to your camera settings; you can even fine tune the focus directly with your keyboard (or mouse).

I use this kind of set up when I shoot static objects.

In reality I usually buy the card one below the very latest model, Sandisk III rather than Sandisk IV for example. I assume I'm getting most of the performance for a lot less money.

I do exactly the same.  I use  mainly  a 8gb Sandisk Extreme III  and I am looking for a 16gb same kind.

Don't forget that video may require much more speed and capacity on your next card!

Once you are accepted, you have to go trough few forms (name, address, etc.) and this particular form shows up automatically... With plenty infos on how to fill it.

How sweet it is...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Do you insure your equipment
« on: June 02, 2009, 17:19 »
Since I have revenues from my camera, my insurance company told me that my home ins. did not cover my gear.

But they also told me that I could add 5000$ worth of gear for 39$ (CDN) a year...Which is quite affordable.

Few months ago, I bought a 5DMKII so I wanted to upgrade my coverage, it ended up that going from 5000$ to 10000$ would cost me 150$ more.  But they offered me to cover my gear up to 10000$ when in my house and up to 5000$ when out of my house for 9$ more, so I'm covered in that way for a total of 48$.

It does NOT cover any accidental damage (dropping or such); it covers damages if caused by a fire or such in my house; it also cover (5000$) while i'm out, anywhere.

So maybe you can try to deal some kind of arrangement based on your habits.

I always keep in my bag a couple of shower caps you can find in hotel rooms.  They're light, soft, you can see trough and there is even a rubber band which wrap well around lens.

In case of heavy rain, put on two!  Same price! :D
