Site Related / Tapatalk Broke?
« on: November 21, 2013, 16:05 »
Hi,

Anybody else having problems accessing Microstock Group with Tapatalk on their iphone.

I've been using this App (not sure which version it was) for a while now and it's always been working great.

Yesterday I updated the App (now V 2.3.3) . The App seems to be running OK, but it won't let me into Microstockgroup.com?

It is possible that I may have had a problem with access first and then I updated. Sounds silly, but I actually can't remember!
Vaguely, I remember having a problem with access, then getting distracted and doing some updates, then can't/still get access.

iphone 4s still running ios 5.1.1

Any ideas?
Thanks

There is a search made by ajt and cascoly to cover the whole network.

Not necessarily discovered by new customers though.

Why do you say?

Apologies, if I'm wrong, but I didn't think including the global search link was included in every site by default? I thought the emphasis was on the connection to a select few sites?

Symbiostock - Technical Support / Re: Registration to purchase

There are plenty of 'retail' sites around that don't require registration. I've purchased from many and always appreciate the easy, hassle free shopping experience.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Moldels and Money ?

A shoot can easily get to $1000 in modelling fees, but I'm not worried if I'll make the money back (I know I will - at least on the average)

Seriously? You make this back in Microstock? Over how many years? And still there is a profit?

Off Topic / Re: Will the Cell Phone Replace the dSLR?
« on: July 26, 2013, 03:39 »
I have a studio full of strobes but in a few years there'll be like floppy discs collecting dust.

Have you noticed what's been happening with ISO. Some cameras can practically shoot in the dark.

I exaggerate, but still .....

And the CD didn't replace vinyl.

And digital didn't replace film.

And we all still use floppy discs.

etc etc etc

Smart phones have already pretty much replaced compact cameras and video cams as well.

Such a shame that 95% of this thread was wasted on bickering, quibbling and sniping. Yuri offered an opportunity for debate and it was wasted.

Regarding mobile phones, as I said in an earlier thread 'wake up and smell the coffee'.

And honestly, why on earth question Yuri's qualification and judgement of smart phone potential. Do you think he doesn't understand what competing with a DSLR requires?

34
I don't have a site yet, but to me centralisation makes sense. Some constitution or founding principles could be established to protect against mistrust/corruption/greed etc. One such principle could be that whatever happens commission remains at 100%. Just a thought.

35
Yes, what's registration all about? It's not required as far as the Paypal is concerned.

36
PS .... the $500/week guy probably is a lie though.

Or at best a plant .... they probably sponsor some guy to run around taking thousands of pics and basically buy them off him.
They make a 'mobile app' photographer millionaire and everybody starts uploading like mad, cos everybody wants to be (rich) like him.

That's very cheap advertising & promotion for $500 per week.

When I first started looking at Micro, I often wondered if Yuri was just that as well. Somebody (with obvious talent too), that the industry sort of 'sponsored' to make a hero of.

Kinda like the David Beckham of micro that everybody is desperate to mimic.

37
Wake up and smell the coffee guys and gals.

You think Yuri is the just throwing $1.2mill out the window?

This isn't about actually commissioning photography for $5. The $5 (I think it might be actually be $2.50 now btw, if you read the site) is just an incentive to get people shooting and uploading. This is a whole new library build in the making and it's an investment in the future (near future) technology of smart phones which in a couple of years from now will be seriously awesome bits of compact camera kit.

I've been tinkering with FOAP for a while and it's quite addictive cos it's so so simple. Whip your phone out, make a nice composition, click a few buttons to make it look cool, keyword and upload from your phone. Job done - had fun - portfolio growing. Who knows, maybe one day somebody will buy one.

I won't make any real money of course, but with the numbers game (crowd sourcing) comes a nice profit for the agency owners (Yuri et all) :-)

Smart phones + crowd sourcing .... Watch this Space.

(Oh, and don't forget all those recent threads about newspapers getting rid of staff photographers and giving journalists iphones). But then why even send anybody out when there's always a crowd of nearby on lookers with a smart phone?

There's another very similar concept App from Depositphotos as well called Clashot.
Same thing .... everyone is getting on board. Another race to IPO millions.

As a professional photographer, obviously this is all highly depressing really, but hey, you've either gotta laugh or cry. lol

Common licensing and common pricing are two separate things.

Licensing can be complicated and I can imagine buyers being cautious and extremely reluctant about having to read a whole lot of waffle for every image purchase from independent sellers, each with their own terms.

Pricing on the other hand is simple. One glance and you see the price. I can't see any problem with that part. If it's too expensive, too bad, the buyer can move on and find something cheaper. If it's too expensive but the buyer really really likes the image, well hey, maybe they'll just splash out and treat themselves. Just like real shopping.

As it is now symbiostock is not
customer friendly
secure enough
branded enough

Obviously this is in it's infancy, but wouldn't this global search concept be the way to go .......

Symbiostock - Hosting / Re: 1and1 ?
« on: July 15, 2013, 08:33 »
Thanks for the responses.

It should be noted that the $4.95/month deal with Bluehost does require a 36 month payment in advance ($178.20).

I am excited to get on board with Symbio but as I said, small portfolio (tiny actually), so need to keep start up costs right down.

Moving all my hosting over to Bluehost is definitely an option but a bit of a hassle and since other people are likely to encounter this problem, it would be useful to understand exactly what the issue is with 1and1.

Is it that over 10mb jpegs is the problem?
Or is it that over 10 megapixel images is the problem?
(both these have been mentioned).

1and1 support did have this to say, but I dont know how these memory quotas actually relate to Jpeg sizes?

Apparently my standard hosting package at 1and1 gives me 30mb PHP memory ... (4.99/m +vat).
If I upgrade to 1and1 Unlimited package then I get 60mb (6.99/m + vat).
Upgrade to 1and1 Business package I get 80MB. (9.99/m + vat).

Would this additional memory actually solve the problems?

Having said all that, it looks as though it would probably just be cheaper to switch anyway :-/

Hi Steve, could you elaborate a little on the problems you were having? Are you confident that the problems were indeed to do with 1and1? Much appreciated, many thanks

Symbiostock - Hosting / 1and1 ?
« on: July 11, 2013, 06:56 »
I already have a hosting package with 1and1 ..... I get the impression they're not great for Symbiostock .... but are they completely out of the question?

Would like to get started with a Symbiostock site, but only have a small portfolio and don't really want to incur additional costs if possible.

Many Thanks

If you decide to close your account with an agency, can you request/demand a payout - even if you haven't reached minimum target?

The amount of unclaimed royalty must be quite extraordinary I would imagine .... people that open accounts, upload, get bored and forget all about it .... people that die and leave no details for next of kin ....

I should imagine that many agencies maintain quite a healthy turnover simply from unclaimed royalties.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: FAA - How to get noticed?
« on: June 21, 2013, 08:40 »
Somehow I managed to have 'not safe' filter on most of my images - not sure how that happened - probably didn't help much.

I guess with only nine images in my little set - I'm probably expecting too much anyway.

Ron - impressive sales figures - any particular style/type of work most popular?

Print on Demand Forum / FAA - How to get noticed?
« on: June 21, 2013, 05:54 »
I have a small set of images that I think could do really well if discovered by the right buyers in a place like Fine Art America.

Excitedly, I opened an account and put in all the work to get my page up and running -  finally I had it all sorted and I reckon my page looked pretty good.

The images are basically a set of arty slightly abstract creations deriving from flowers and plants .... so I put them under the Floral category.

I then left the site for a few days (3 days I think) - then went back to the site (didn't login) and started searching through Floral/Recent Uploads, click, click, click, click ..... I don't know how many pages I went through, at least 15,  until I finally gave up, still not having found my work. So much new uploads in just a few days!!!

The only way I can actually find my work was to look up under my name.

Now the images have been up for a few weeks and they have only had one view (I think that was probably me).

So this seems completely useless - me thinks.

I left all the keywording very generic because the images just look good for what they are - for me it's not about which particular plant they are etc, so I didn't say 'rose' 'tulip' etc.

Anything I can do to get my work found and seen?

Thanks

Software - General / What submitter do you use and why?! :)

Apologies, you are completely right of course. I hadn't realised that the complete submission could be handled like that - interesting thanks.

@leaf .... I think that's just a typo, but Stockuploader DOES submit images. However, it does not deal with, or in anyway effect your keywording. So the moral is .... Sort your keywording out in some place else then give Stockuploader a go.

I helped with beta testing on the Mac version of Stockuploader and I can now recommend the current version which is reliable and runs very smoothly ...

Microstock Services / Re: Lightburner is paid now:(
« on: June 05, 2013, 08:48 »
Im quite new to all of this Microstock business, but I quickly realised I needed an easy and efficient method to upload to multiple agencies. I tried most of the products around and they all seemed to have problems. I was then invited to help the developer of StockUploader with some Beta testing.

I use the Mac version on my Snow Leopard system and I am now very pleased with the reliability and performance happy to recommend it .
