Hi all,

I'll be in San Jose for one week in April. I'll have a rental car and I have yet to decide if my return flight will also go from San Jose or from another city (I'm a bit flexible on this).

I've already been to the west coast once (including Las Vegas and National Parks) but then I had only a point and shoot with me.

I'd love to get some good trip advise / recommendations from you. Where should I go for great photos? Which kind of trip would you suggest?

Many thanks and all the best,
Michael

Hi!

i don't believe the firfox plug in uses the username and password.  They use the open log in that is allready on your computer to check the stats... not sure if shutterstock feels this is different but seems a little different to me.

Ah, ok! That's indeed different then. However, this mechanism only works with a few agencies which use cookies properly (only a few unfortunately).

All the best,
Michael

My understanding is that the program only stored passwords locally and it never transmitted information to any "home base".  And if he were planning to do that in the future, then why would he use his real name and give links to all of his stock accounts?

That's correct.

And yes, all other software will also be affected by this, including the Firefox plugin. He made it very clear that they do not want to have their user's passwords placed in applications other than their website or software which they wrote themself.

They also just posted a general warning w.r.t. this in their forums.

All the best,
Michael

Hi all,

well - legal or not - it came down to the simple question: "If you want to keep you want us to reactivate your account then remove us from your program." This was a "no brainer" for me, since Microstock Monitor was "just for fun" and "because I could" (there isn't much to earn from the referals I got).

The additional threat w.r.t the lawyers did the rest ... .

All the best,
Michael

Hi,

yeah, you are most probably right. It's a pitty.

Hi!

Yes...I was quite astonished/unsettled/shocked as well - as you can imagine :-(

Hi!

They said that they can't have their trademark or their user's passwords in it.

Sorry to hear.  :( :( Of all the sites, I wouldn't have picked that one.

At least you can keep going with the microstock hobby - you will just have to find a new outlet for your programing hobby.

That's no problem, I'm working on my PhD in computer science, so I've enough outlets for my programming "hobby"
:-D.

He told me that they will also go after all the other similiar softwares ... .

Said that, I can understand him. If I would own a big and succesful company, I would also be worried about my customers and their safeness.

All the best,
Michael

Hi all,

I just went through 40 of the more troublesome minutes in my life (actually the worst, except when I did the exams for my master).

First my account at one of the big 6 was suspended. 5 minutes later I got an e-mail from the founder of this agency telling me that he did not want his agency to appear in Microstock Monitor (because of trademark issues) and that I will hear from his lawyers soon.

I took immediate action by removing the Microstock Monitor website, apologized through e-mail and begged for my account to be re-opened. Fortunately he was very understanding after my swift reaction and my account is re-activated. He also pointed out that I may continue to re-distribute the software, if I remove their agency from it.

However, I decided to not take this risk. Another agency might not be as understanding as this one and I might get into big trouble ... and it's definitely not worth that.

I'm very sorry for this, but I decided that I won't continue distributing Microstock Monitor.

I do hope that you understand.

All the best,
Michael (...who is still quite unsettled about this - so excuse any typos)

General Stock Discussion / Microstock - for pros or hobby photog's
« on: February 26, 2007, 04:35 »
Hi all,

let me throw in another two cents into this discussion.

I do not think that the Microstock market or target audience (i.e. mostly prosumer photographers and some pros) will change much. Those photographers who enjoy doing this jus as a hobby will stay in Microstock. Those photographers who are willing to extend their knowledge and invest more time and effort will likely also stay to some extend in Microstock but will also move in other (e.g., Macrostock) markets. I think "Microstock" as an "entry point" into the market of selling photos will not change much. It's the photographers who may change and may find more lucrative markets for them.

All the best,
Michael

ps: I've wanted to reply to this thread since Friday, but couldn't find it because of the now unrelated Subject. Should we change it?

123RF / Re: What's wrong with 123rf?
« on: February 25, 2007, 11:42 »
Hi!

Sales at 123rf are slow, but consistent.

Same for me. 123RF is currently performing the same as StockXpert for me. The next better ones are Lucky Oliver and Featurepics. Then comes Bigstockphoto, Fotolia, Dreamstime and Shutterstock is (by far) the best earner for me. I just got accepted at iStockPhoto, so I have no valuable data for them. I'm staying with all of them for now, but I might eventually cut down as well. Specially StockXpert (even as it is listed as one of the "big 6") is falling like a stone for me.

All the best,
Michael

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Sigma or Canon lens kit?
« on: February 24, 2007, 10:28 »
Hi!

All the kit lenses are so called "cheapies" and should be avoided.

This site gives you an excellent introduction to good and bad (canon) lenses:

Hi stockfoto,

check:

and
http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/

for reviews of Canon / Sigma lenses. Then you can decide yourself if you would like to switch.

Hi GeoPappas,

according to the sigma website, the 1:3 magnification factor is at 50 mm. So it is actually at the tele-end rather than the wide-end, right? The review here http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_1850_28m_nikon/index.htm says:

The 18-50mm EX shows the quite typical distortion characteristic for a lens in this class. At 18mm there're very pronounced barrel distortions which ease continuously towards the long end of the zoom range. At 35mm and 50mm the lens is basically free of distortions.

Is it the barrel distortions which you were talking about? Sorry, but as you know I'm still very new do the DSLR business.

Many thanks and all the best,
Michael

Cameras / Lenses / Experience with Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO?
« on: February 24, 2007, 07:17 »
Hi all!

Many thanks for your help so far. I feel that I'm progressing well towards chosing the best lens for me. As you know, I'm switching to DSLR (XTi) and I'm currently on my quest to find the perfect lens within my budget, which is around 500 Euros / 600 USD.

From my side, there are two main requirements:

1) This lens should be a very good walkaround lens for landscape, nature, people, buildings, ... just anything which I might encounter on my travels (except for wildlife, where I would need a telezoom).

2) I do a lot of product photography (isolations with a light tent). The products consist of all kind of gadgets (mobile phones, mp3 players) but also food and so on. Nothing too small, but still the lens should have a very good minimum focus distance and also a very good magnification factor.

I put considerable research into finding a lens which fullfills both 1) and 2) and finally came up with the "Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO". This is a revised version of the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC and has the following characteristics which impress me:

a) Minimum focus distance of 0,2m and
b) Magnification factor of 1:3

With the XTi sensor size (22.2 x 14.8 mm) this means that objects as small as 66,6 x 44,4 mm will fill my photo: Well enough for my work.
I've now several questions to you and would be very happy to get any inputs:

1) Does anyone of you have a Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC MACRO and can provide his experiences / opinion about the lense?

2) Are there any reviews available? I only find reviews of the older "Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC"?

3) The Sigma has a good price. I'd happily spend more (within my budget of 500 Euros / 600 USD) for a higher quality lens with compareable zoom and in particular similiar characteristics w.r.t. minimum focus distance and magnification factor. Is there such a beast out there? Maybe from Canon? I couldn't find one :-(

Any other inputs are very welcome as well!

Many thanks,
Michael

Microstock Monitor / Re: Suggestions
« on: February 24, 2007, 06:09 »
Hi!

Many thanks for your suggestions:

Got a couple of suggestions for it:

1. At the bottom of current balance put a "total"

2. Could possibly add a "Downloads per day" "Average DL per day" and "Average Profit per day"

3. Give the option to minimize it to the tray.

I'm moving these three to the "upcoming features thread" - many thanks.

4. Have the option to not include some of the sites, so you don't see "wrong login"

It shouldn't do that. If the user and password is empty it should say "sign up?". It should only give you a "wrong login" message if you have provided a user / password.

All the best,
Michael

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Lens magnification factor - a question
« on: February 24, 2007, 05:37 »
How did you come up with your numbers by the way?

What I did was to calculate the area of the chip first (i.e., 22.2 * 14.8 = ~328 mm^2). Then I took these 328 mm^2 and multiplied them by 3 because of the 1:3 magnification factor which brought me to about 960 mm^2. Then I just tried to find fitting values for height and length which give me about 960 mm^2 if multiplied.

Are you sure that you have to double both height and length to get the object size for a magnification factor of 1:2?

All the best,
Michael

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Lens magnification factor - a question
« on: February 24, 2007, 05:06 »
Hi!

This is what I thought first as well. But then I thought: Ok, if I multiply both the length and the height by 2, won't this then correspond to 4 times the size?

I'm not sure either...maybe someone else can enlighten us :-)

All the best,
Michael

Hi all,

featurepics just stopped working in Microstock Monitor for me. It seems that they slightly changed the structure of their website. I've adjusted Microstock Monitor and a new release is available here:
http://microstockmonitor.unfolded.com/index.php?pr=Downloads

Can you confirm that Featurepics stopped working in 1.3 and that 1.31 fixes that problem?

Many thanks,
Michael

Cameras / Lenses / Lens magnification factor - a question
« on: February 24, 2007, 03:24 »
Hi all,

given that the sensor size of the XTi is 22.2 x 14.8 mm, a lens with a 1:2 magnification would allow me to fill the photo with a object of the size 32 x 22 mm, right? With a 1:3 magnification the object would need to be about 39 x 24 mm to fill the photo, or?

If that is about right then I think I won't need a macro for my work right away (see my other threads) but could do my isolations also with a very good standard zoom, which would also be the much better walkaround lens.

Many thanks,
Michael

Dreamstime.com / Re: DT Performance
« on: February 24, 2007, 02:55 »
Hi!

I think that DPI is also an indicator of the size of a site's user base. My DPI is 5+ and SS, 4+ on IS, but only 0.2+ on DT and FT. All four portfolios are the same age and have the same content.

Very nice! And it _nicely_ points out how you _can_ use DPI for comparison: By comparing portfolios of the same age. If you compare portfolios of the same age, DPI can indeed be a very useful measurement. I should do that one time for my photos :-)

All the best,
Michael

I frequently look at other photog's DPI and I judge myself by comparing their's to mine.
In my opinion, if your DPI is below 3.5, then your * wind" and need to explore
why it's so low.

That DPI will depend a lot on when and how you upload.

Two examples: If you upload your whole portfolio at once then your DPI will be very low at first but then raise constantly. If you just start uploading as you shoot, your DPI will be much more balanced.

All the best,
Michael

StockXpert.com / Re: How is StockXpert doing for you?
« on: February 23, 2007, 04:11 »
Hi,

stockXpert is a big dissapointment for me. I signed up at dreamstime, fotolia, bigstockphoto, stockXpert, lucky oliver and featurepics all at the same time and with the same portfolio (about 500 photos) - but of course different acceptance rates.

Out of these and in the current month, dreamstime makes 50% of the income from these agencies' sales, fotolia 16%, bigstockphoto 20%, stockXpert 3%, luckyoliver 3%, featurepics 8%.

So - at least for me (and also considering shutterstock and iStock) - stockXpert is on par with the "up and coming" agencies, but nowhere near the "big 6".

All the best,
Michael
