General Stock Discussion / Re: Selling Stock on Your Behalf
« on: September 12, 2018, 12:40 »
I don't pay for a tagging service - for most of my images, keywords entered by other people would be useless.

I don't really understand what you're proposing, but if it is uploading to existing agencies on our behalf but to your own account, most of the agencies wouldn't allow that without you holding the copyright to the images you upload. And if you're asking if I'd hand over copyright to someone in return for a vague promise of some future sales royalties, the answer is clearly no.

If this is some sort of IQ test, did I pass?

And if you're offering a new service of some sort, not taking the time to describe it fully and clearly suggests an approach to business I wouldn't want to partner with - you've really started on a bad note IMO

Agreed, I am way confused as well.

Would you consider acceptable for an agency to sell your stock content on all major platforms given that you only need to provide the content (no need for metadata, keywords and other details to be filled)? Or instead you would prefer to pay for tagging service and upload by yourself? In the first option, you will pay a small fee per sale.

hmmm ... a small percentage fee for the keywording and distribution wouldn't be bad ... easier to submit every day if we aren't titling/keywording and uploading every single photo for every single site and uploading them all, following up with them and all of that nonsense.

More and more we're finding it painful to devout a couple hours to uploading a little batch for a couple bucks a year. (yeah, fee percent of sale ... a variable cost, adding another fixed cost like $.25 per image or something I doubt I'd do)

My few vectors were rejected due to reason of
Spelling / Grammar -- Image and/or metadata contains spelling or grammatical errors.

I have double checked the files and spellings are correct. I couldn't find what is the problem. Regarding grammar, I am not any english professor, though I think what I write is good and understandable.
In vectors, we display text as a dummy form, the buyers usually replaces them with their version.

Has anyone faced such issue before? Are the reviewers real or bots?

Shoot, I uploaded a few photos over the weekend and half were rejected. I just figured that they were bad and I'd move on but, maybe something's up over there.

Was that last weekend? Mine are still sitting from days ago.  :D

I believe on the first ... either first or second. They moved fast, by like next day ... The rejects usually are accepted other places so I just move on with life. lol

My neighbor bought some kind of training collar that beeped and, I guess, shocked her dog every time it barked. So all day and night I got to hear the dog barking, followed by a series of incredibly annoying electronic beeps. It didn't work to curtail the barking, but now the noise was twice as annoying for neighbors and also drove the dog nuts. Just train your dog.

The humans need the shock collar, not the dogs. Shock collars are effective when used properly. You cant fix stupid. And dogs bark. If you dont want to hear your dog barking, dont get a dog. Simple fix, no training involved.

I know a person who had an invisible fence and shock collar on the dog. They lived on a cul-de-sac, but she didnt want the dog roaming the neighborhood. The dog got shocked twice, and that was it. The dog had the freedom to roam the yard to her hearts content. The dog only wore the collar when she went outside. It was a great solution for my friend.

The dog probably still already knew he wasn't supposed to leave the yard though. I mean, it only works if the owner has some positive and encouraging interaction. Just tossing the fence up and telling it to go play wouldn't be helpful.

The fences and collars isn't the real issue, pet owners being stupid is the issue.

If you don't have the time to train a animal properly, don't get one at all..

In that case get cats - they will train you.

Freal though, I have a cat that watches movies ... alone ... She basically comes and sits at the office door until I walk out to turn a movie on for her. She does the same if the food bowl is even partially empty.

go into dog training school. You'll learn much more without the need of electric collars.

Positive reinforcement works better than shock collars. In fact, I had one dog that was so defiant that he'd ignore the thing all together and it would even make him worse.

yes, symbio is easy to setup & maintain, but still takes time, esp'ly to add hundreds/thousands of images; I've stopped adding to my site and instead point to SS - simple to do and generates real $

How come? I upload photos and it's easiest of all 'agencies', just drop files on favorite FTP program and they will be ready for sale in minutes. No need to apply model releases and all that jazz, no rejections ...

AND symzio has never taken off - very few artists,  and lacks coverage in entire areas (look what you get for searches on India, Italy, Germany or Paris.  'Grand Canyon' shows 14 images of the Hawaii version!!!!! )  so why would a buyer go there rather than SS et al?

Agreed. We just need to look in mirror :)

Those sites are like ... minutes to set up. Uploading to them is faster than most of the agencies and lately it seems like uploading is getting to be more ridiculously confusing. When Symbio first was released everyone was all excited ... for a few months. Then realized that it does take time to build momentum and sales. Once it started looking like work and patience people started dropping off.

Very good considerations SuperPhoto.

... terms of sales it will never be anywhere near as what you can achieve with the help of stock agencies. But I do see it as an interesting alternative to the stock agencies for people who have a certain size of portfolio. Some of the interesting aspects:
- 100% commissions
- Options to sell different licenses (exclusive licenses, TIFF files, RAW files, graded / ungraded video)
- More control to present your portfolio the way you want

you forget to include:
-- time & effort involved in setting up and maintaining your own web site
-- cost of marketing aand advertising to get noticed
-- reason for anyone to come to your relativley small site rather than an agency

- Get to know you customers
how?  i was actively involved in shareware for any years, as a developer and as officer of the ASP & ESC (shareware organizations) - dealing with thousands of customers, i had only a handful of personal contacts w buyers - customers want your product not a friend for life

idk. When I was self hosting I made one sale, paid for the domain that year. and I've only got 100 something little crap graphics.

kinda proves my point -- you broke even on $ spent, but do you value your time making the site at $0?

If you've already got a site and stuff it's certainly worth the 30 minutes to set up woocommerce or something, sure.

Adobe stock is the same as Fotolia I think???

Adobe owns Fotolia, but there are two sites. If you are already a Fotolia contributor, then there's no need to upload to Adobe Stock directly - everything is already there, assuming you've linked your accounts.

If you aren't submitting to Adobe Stock/Fotolia you should - it's doing much better than anywhere other than Shutterstock. I'd leave Dreamstime alone, only because sales there are dismal these days. Likewise, I'd give 123rf a miss because their sales have fallen off badly.

Alamy is not consistent (at least not for me) but when sales happen, they can be for very decent royalties. I'd definitely consider adding them to your roster (uploading is a bigger pain than many agencies though, even with their new system)

DT died, the only reason to even bring up their name is that I'm still stuck halfway between payouts. lol. I don't think I've sold anything there all year.

113
I have looked through my microstock sites and found that those who sell for me are;

Dreamstime not often but at a good price,
Shutterstock the best site for me (I will avoid BigStock because they belong to Shutterstock so I think I will compete with myself and sell at a lower price on BigStock)

I listened to you and started to uploaded to some more sites and chosed..
Depositphoto and 123RF lets see what happens. Hope they are good choices.

I would love to have something on Alamy but I worry about my ability to upload regularly. How often did you submit anything to them?
I would not think about upload anything that I have on a microstock site. It has to bee unique and making quality takes time. Probably more time then I have. Preferabel for me would be illustrations. Any suggestions?

Adobe Stock for sure. They're climbing month by month, I'd love to see them be top this time next year.

"one year to pay back 800 dollar?
oh god."

Do I need to repeat that I started from scratch? what does your comment add to the conversation? Nothing ... zero, niet, nada. You seem to have a lot of time, you should take some pictures or just get some fresh air and put some positivism in your (too many) post.  ;D

I am very happy with this $ 1200 (and not $ 800)

Don't mind him. Total idiot and laughing stock in this forum.

mr dumb. ahahaha. u reached already 1200 dollar=?

Serious though, like the biggest MSG troll ...

Are you afraid because HarshTrivedi298 is a strong competitor for you?
In other hands, if SS control quality don't reject this pics is because they probably sell.
Or maybe the  OP has done an experiment to show that they're not controlling quality.
Or maybe they're making the point that if you pay peanuts, you'll get ...
I think the second one is the most accurate. Because we dont know the meaning of quality for SS. Their parameters of quality. Some people say they use AI for review pics, no human reviewers.

I'm thinking so ... they used to reject a fair load of my stuff but, I'm thinking I should just dump my whole library on them and let them figure it out. lol.

116
lol. If you already got away with taking the photo, I'd say go ahead. I highly doubt that they're tracking down a lone photographer over a $100 ticket. Some of the professional photographers even sneak photos in places they aren't supposed to. I think the whole compact tripod market is probably built around this.
You are probably correct and I'm no saint and sneak a few in. I guess the question arises if your image starts appearing as post cards/posters etc. Personally i've risked a few but as I said above if a location makes it abundantly clear you can't do it I don't. On a related matter last time I went horse racing at Newmarket I had to get a permit (free) and sign a declaration just because I had a DSLR.

Yeah, I usually go to a couple concerts per year and there's a common "no detachable lenses" restriction. There are probably hundreds of decent cameras with a fixed lens. Like uhm ... all of the Nikon compacts are on par with my 3200.

Hell, my Samsung telephone comes with two fixed focal length lenses ... and you could sneak in one of those little detachable things nearly anywhere. They're fighting a losing battle.

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia site gone?

For god's sake, click on "return to fotolia legacy site"

That's why I screenshot and underlined it. lol.

My bookmark must have been redirected or maybe it's cookie based? idk. I'm amazed everyone else kept going.

Try that: Fotolia.com/contributor. There will appear "page not found". But above you will find the button "log in"

But if you enter the webpage correctly https://www.fotolia.com/Contributor

It's there.... with or without www

Also, google Fotolia and they still have advertised links at the top that take you straight to Fotolia and even the organic links take you straight there to the client side. I think you may have just tried to get to them when they've released an update of some kind and it was still filtering through the dns servers. Certainly still there though.

I wasn't necessarily after the contributor side on this visit. I have a sub and was looking for more images around like webhosting and the like ... The Fotolia subscription model works way better for me than another Adobe sub. (cheaper anyway, I buy way more than submit)

Fantastic images man. I'm surprised you're throwing them on SS ... I'd think FAA or something better for most of that. You're going to end up with someone buying them for a buck and putting them on their merch n stuff.

I read the synopsis and it sounds good! Is Barnes and Noble on the list of upcoming places to buy? That is my preferred source. Also will it be available in paperback, or only digital (kindle)?

I only buy printed books. I might snag it here after a few unknowns. (new baby and right out of a slump in work, the next couple months are scary territory, life always works out though :) ).

That kindle link sucks. Can we get that on the regular amazon print thing?

Isn't this illegal 'Price Fixing' ?

No, it's price fixing in the sense that they've changed the price. Companies do that all the time without it being illegal.

If it were a monopoly then it could be. That PharmaBro guy comes to mind. In a free market you are, as should be, free to set whatever price on your products/services that you care to.

Edit: Energy companies in Texas! That's a good one, they're always getting wrapped up in lawsuits.

Would you have the chance to capture editorials of those e-game competitions in S.Korea...crowds, contestants, promotions, etc? They're fanatics and a huge and growing business!

I used to play Starcraft a few years ago, must have lost a few months of  my life. Also Counter-strike.

Still play way too much CS.
