Unless you're camera is capturing uncompressed footage (which is unlikely at this point) you're working with a compressed format out of the camera.  Once any editing is completed you don't want to compress it all the way back down to the same level of extreme compression that came out of the camera.  While photojpeg is still a compressed format it is not nearly as compressed as h.264 and gives buyers more room to make their own edits. Exporting to photojpeg doesn't make the quality in and of itself any better but it provides the buyer with more leeway on their end.

27
h.264 is much more compressed than photojpeg.  H.264 looks good when played as a finished project but people buying stock footage generally want to edit and color grade the footage to match the rest of their project and this is where h.264 falls apart.  Due to it's compression there just isn't enough info to do any significant editing without the quality taking a hit.

Every agency I distribute through uses photojpeg except for one.  That one converts my photojpeg file into an h.264 file.  I've stopped uploading there as they don't make any sales.

General Stock Discussion / Re: PicturEngine: Some thoughts
« on: October 27, 2013, 01:57 »
There is only a partial search available there right now.  They still have not officially gone live.

In my case, the buyer came directly to the site via a google search.  Within two minutes they had registered on the site and completed the purchase about 15min later (probably due to waiting for email with password which isn't being required in the latest version of symbio but I haven't upgraded yet).  No discussion with buyer before or since.

CrackerClips:  We cannot force new terms on you, per section 9: "In the event that you object to the proposed amended agreement within such thirty (30) day period, then the proposed amended agreement will not apply to you."

Hi pjmat - Yes, I read that but what does that really mean?  What's the process for disagreeing with contract changes?  A little vague.

I would much rather have all our work removed after giving a 30 day notice at any time and for any reason.  That keeps both parties from trying to overstep.  If Clipcentric can terminate at any time with 30 days notice it seems reasonable that the contributor should be able to as well.

« on: October 25, 2013, 12:16 »
25 downloads for a video is a lot and it seems they may be overestimating the volume for footage.  On the picture side I really like dreamstime (other than the subscription offering) and it does well for me.  So I'm hopeful for the video side but they're really late to the party and both royalties and prices will have to come up quite a bit if they plan to succeed and get contributors behind them.

Just glanced through the contract and it looked like the only way I could terminate the agreement was if Clipcentric breached the terms.  I'd be interested in giving this a bit of a try but if they can change the terms of the contract or dump me with 30 days notice, I would like the same.

That's good to hear!  I hope they can get back on track.

I really hope that's not the case as ClipCanvas does pretty well for us and they've been great to work with.  We're still waiting though for the last couple of batches we uploaded to appear in the edit section.  Getting stuff to edit seems to be going slower.

Stocksy / Re: What is Stocksy? - From an Outsider's Viewpoint...
« on: September 23, 2013, 15:41 »
Personally I believe that almost any image good enough to be accepted on Stocksy, on an exclusive basis, would almost certainly earn far more as a non-exclusive image on multiple microstock sites.

Honestly, if I put the images I have on Stocksy on the other four sites I'm selling on, I doubt they would make more than a few dollars a month.  There's an audience that wants what Stocksy is selling, and they're willing to pay a reasonable fee.

You are on 2 low tier and 2 middle tier agencies if I am correct. If the images go on the top 6 they would probably outsell Stocksy.

Sorry.  The four "non-subscription" sites.

How'd you get out of selling subscriptions on Deposit Photos?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: [iStock] No PP sales for August 2013 (?)
« on: September 19, 2013, 17:28 »
Okay, I thought I was just missing something that was right in front of me :)  Now I see it takes serious dedication to figure out what sold.  In the old days I just let the sales ring through and I didn't try to hunt down these ones that weren't so obvious.  Nowadays, with a lot less sales I've gotten more curious to see where these bigger amounts come from when they show up on occasion.  Thanks Disorderly!

I got one for $44 and change. Took a while to find it; it was a Getty Images sale.

How do you find it?  I got a sale today for $45 but I have no idea what it was for. No image or video listed as sold today is for that much.

It wasn't easy.  The Stats tab for August gave me the amount.  Then I clicked on My Uploads, and then Partner Program.  Then I looked for all the images that had earned at least that much.  Luckily (being ironic), only one image of mine had made more than $44.  Then I went back to My Uploads to figure out the URL to get to my royalties for an image.  (The Partner Program page doesn't hotlink to royalty pages.)  Combining the ID of the photo with the royalty URL got me this:

   http://www.istockphoto.com/file_downloads.php?id=99999&PageSetting=PartnerProgram

Replace the ID with yours and then click for the last page if you have more than one.  You should see an entry for the amount you saw on the Stats page.

Look at last month's graph, it'll show up purple for GI and green for PP.

Got it, thank you!  So I apparently received $45 for a single partner program license last month?  Not bad.

kk5hy I sent you a PM.

I found out a new site I signed up with partnered with them
T3Media.com
I emailed them a couple of times. no reply. I wonder why. I'll call them this afternoon.
1400 of my clips that I uploaded to T3 are now on Dissolve at $5.00
Anyway, I'm pulling my work from T3 after this deal and I would never work with Dissolve.

Jake

I doubt it's "stolen".  Most likely one of our distributors has made a real lousy deal with them.  I'm trying to find that out now.

Edit: So far, the contributor email listed on their site ( [email protected] ) has bounced back to me as an invalid address.

Time for a Video-Symbiostock Network before this b*llsh*t continues!

I couldn't agree more!  I would love to hear that someone with the programming ability and know how is working on a Symbiostock - Video platform.

After the failed email to Dissolve, I called the contributor phone number and spoke with someone.  They didn't have any answers for me but promised that someone would be in contact with me shortly.  I've also written an email to one of our distributors that I suspect may be involved in this and am waiting to hear back.

I was gonna say for 5 bucks they aren't getting any video from me but after having a look I can see they are already selling almost 1,000 of our clips for 5 bucks each.  Where did they get these clips from!!!!!  Other established video producers may want to have a look for their video.

Hey that's pretty cool! Nice to see a stock company think outside the box a bit and come up with something that's a win-win for both buyers, contributors and the agency.

Microstock Analytics / Re: no data from 123RF
« on: September 09, 2013, 18:29 »
I signed up a few days ago to try this service out for 3 months.  It looks like it's a great program but I'm having some trouble.  First, a large percentage of our photos and videos on Shutterstock have metadata for somebody else's  pictures.  Near as I can tell the sales amounts are correct and the pictures are mine but the captions/keywords belong to other pictures from SS (ie a picture of a lake is described and keyworded for a "lion in the Serengeti" .  Subjects we have never covered.  If I click on a thumbnail it will take me to the image that the metadata is describing on SS not my picture.  I've forced full updates a couple of times but it doesn't change anything.

As mentioned above, I can't get any data from 123rf.

Finally, since yesterday or the day before I am unable to log-in and there is a message saying that the service is down.  Is this a common problem?

I just realized something else.  I'm trying to set up multiple extended licenses for different things (ie. Extended Print Run & Products for Resale) where a customer might want two or more different extended licenses at the same time. As of right now only one extended license at a time can be selected.  Bummer.

47
- If the vertical line is removed can the different licences be each on their own line (otherwise button can be on line line and licence description on the next if three or more licence options)

I'd like to see the extended licenses each appear on their own line as well.  It would be much cleaner looking if you have multiple additional licenses. In addition, it would be great if the Standard License button was selected by default and if the licenses themselves were editable.

What we're trying here is a month's special offer of a popular file at $1.00 for all sizes. We'll probably run one every month, just to see what happens.

The current bargain is at http://www.picturemojo.co.nz/image/sydney-harbour-bridge-illuminated-at-twilight/

That's an interesting approach. You're almost giving the photo away but they have to be willing to spend at least a buck to get it. Keeps the people who are never going to buy anything away because they won't even spend a dollar and gives legit buyers an opportunity to try out your site as well as see the quality of your product. Where are you advertising this special?

Nice image by the way!
