iStockPhoto.com / Checking downloads on IS Partner Program
« on: March 29, 2015, 12:13 »
I've only just discovered where the stats are for IS's partner program. Now I can make sense of earnings that weren't reflected in my dls. My question is how does one keep tabs of downloads there? In the regular IS dl stats, I can just go to last DL and sort by the latest ones, but the partner program stat list doesn't have an option to sort by Last DL. Is there any way to do this?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Tethering Question?
« on: March 27, 2015, 01:16 »
I assume you shooting RAW. The histogram on your DSLR is showing the values for the JPEG preview you see on camera while LR is showing you a proper histogram for the RAW file.

Hi, Zach

I recently had some videos rejected for being interlaced (I usually render p). I have no problem with not wanting interlaced footage, but I think if interlaced video is not acceptable then it should be listed in the Technical Requirements part of the Submission Requirements page.

New Sites - General / Re: Kozzi & Indivstock. Anyone ?
« on: March 24, 2015, 21:28 »
Kozzi is a low earner but on par with CS or DP for me.

I don't know about any way to do that, but I have a suggestion for future workflow to make it easier.

In Lightroom, add your Metadata to your files first before you export for editing. That way all the subsequent files in other formats will have the metadata.

Pond5 / Re: Exporting CSV data from P5
« on: March 20, 2015, 03:13 »
To export from P5, just go to My Uploads -> Apply CSV -> Video.

The other sites all have their own layout though, so you need to download samples from their sites and copy and paste from P5 CSV into the corresponding columns on the other sites' CSVs. (Videoblocks accepts P5 as is).

Many thanks to Zach for helping me sort out the CSV problem, which turned out to be user error  :-[
Much appreciated and great to see the company being so helpful.

These are quite amusing. Even though it is a Getty/FOX double evil collaboration. I think they reflect the authenticity of FOX news well, though.

imagesbykenny - I checked your account, and it looks like you got the CSV to work. If you ever run into trouble going forward, just shoot a note to our support team: contributor [at] videoblocks.com.
Hi. No, it still doesn't work. I entered the metadata for all the files manually.

FWIW, the video popup on the content management page, which there is no way to close, is really annoying. There is no way to enter the data once the video pops up without refreshing the page.

General - Stock Video / Videoblocks CSV
« on: March 01, 2015, 01:13 »
On the submit contents page, Videoblocks claims:

"We accept Shutterstock and Pond5 CSVs! If you have either of these you can upload them unchanged."

I tried with both my SS and P5 CSV files and neither works. All the files stay in the unrecognized column. Is this just me or is anyone else having this problem?

Also make sure you always choose "Custom installation" or something similar and carefully disable all additional software installation checkboxes.

I usually do that with any installs, but this one conveniently had the custom install option grayed out... That should have been a red flag, but since I've been using it for years I gave it the benefit of the doubt.

On previous threads about useful video conversion software I have often mentioned Super as being a great simple program to convert any video formats. I am taking that advice back and just want people to know in case they try it.

I used Super for the last 6 or 7 years, and I have always been happy with it (Granted that I was converting non-critical videos from my crappy SD cameras).

I used it for the first time again last week when I wanted to convert videos to IS format (A codec not supported by my now standard batch convertor in Corel Video Studio). The latest version comes with bundled malware and adware that is a PITA to remove. I went through four spyware programs and eventually reset Firefox to get rid of everything.

It includes OpenCandy which pops up ads around the borders of your browser, and MySearchStart, a browser that just links to other browsers. Both of these took me hours to remove.

In addition, this was the first time I used it to convert to the MJpeg format. And the output was terrible. I didn't check the files after converting; I just uploaded them straight to IS, as I was pre-occupied with removing the crap from my PC. Only when IS sent me Deactivation letters to say the files were approved in error and the quality was not good, did I go back and check. And they were indeed awful pixelated messes.

General Stock Discussion / Pixta setting a good example
« on: February 06, 2015, 04:32 »
Today's e-mail from Pixta is a great example of how agencies SHOULD work when they do their sales-incentives plans! Now if only I could sell more there...

From February 9, 2015, we will start a campaign for footage sales promotion.
...
During the period, all footage shall be sold at the following prices.

 Web(S)          $10
 Web(L)          $20
 NTSC / PAL      $30
 HD720           $40
 HD1080          $50
...
 [Royalty rate]
Although the price is different from usual during the period, your royalty rate will be the same as usual.
Please be assured that your earnings will NOT be reduced by this campaign.

Ex) When HD1080 is sold at the campaign price $50,
your earnings will be at the usual price: $90 Royalty rate (%).

From the brief excerpt I read on the page, the writer's writing skills are not too far from his design skills.

One of my goals was to get a photo on a book cover and I have nothing against it being erotic fiction. But this was just such an odd choice for an erotic fiction book cover.

It needs a title like "Herbalife Gone Wild" or something I think.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Pixtastock - new TOS
« on: January 26, 2015, 03:21 »
I had a meeting with some of their content and marketing people while they were here last week. It seems as though they are trying hard to make changes beneficial to both buyers and contributors. So it's possible the ongoing changes to the TOS are a reflection of that.

I don't sell much there, but I give them credit for trying.

I use Corel Video Studio. It is cheap and does basic editing and doesn't have the steep learning curve like some of the other programs. Stabilization is not good, though.

General - Stock Video / Keyframing layer masks
« on: January 22, 2015, 22:31 »
I need to remove logos, etc from footage. It's easy enough with static shots, but when the logos are moving, I'd need to keyframe the layer mask.

I use Corel VideoStudio because it is cheap and does 99% of what I need it to do. But it doesn't do this.

Any suggestions for programs that can? I am happy with VideoStudio and don't want to spend a lot on another program just for this one aspect.

Wait a minute, I played in bands for years and took random road trips, now I've dropped down the "sexy" list by taking photos. I'm mortified... Oh wait it says artistic photos, I'm still safe at number 5 or 6.  ;)

nah....We ALL sexy cos of #4 - making a clever remark
 ;)

I tend to get slapped when I make a clever remark. Some people obviously need to read this list so they can realize how sexy I am.

If you shoot Canon, you can also use Magic Lantern, which has a bulb ramping feature.

Otherwise I use Aperture Priority mode to accommodate the changing light. You don't want to leave the aperture on auto as then each photo will have a different DOF.

General Photography Discussion / Editing metallic surfaces
« on: January 18, 2015, 23:15 »
I always struggle to edit metallic surfaces, such as removing logos on stethoscopes, scratches on metal surfaces, etc. I have tried all of PS's tools for this and none of them give adequate results. The cloned/patched/healed metal surface just tends to end up looking smudged or unreal. Does have anyone have any tips for this?

I have noticed that many metallic surfaces in stock photos have been surface blurred, possibly to hide the effects of this.

(p.s. I thought I had asked this question before, but I don't see it in my old posts)

I've only submitted to 3 or 4 briefs, and had one sale. The sale equaled a few months worth of microstock money, so it was worth the effort.

My main annoyance there is the lack of a feedback or question system, as often the briefs I would attempt are vague. If I know I'm shooting the right subject, I'll do it, but I'm reluctant to make an effort to shoot something the buyer may or may not actually want.
