Thanks for the explanation, John. That would work well for my series.

General - Stock Video / Collections at Motion Elements
« on: September 02, 2014, 03:44 »
What is the function of the "collections" at Motion Elements? When I saw it I assumed it was the same as collections, lightboxes, galleries, etc. at other sites; to be used to put a series in a unit for people to find easily (or for one to share).

But when I started creating one, I saw they have a price field. so it appeared that it actually takes the series of videos and makes them one saleable unit. Is this correct? I don't see any info about this on their FAQs.

General Photography Discussion / Editing metal textures
« on: August 28, 2014, 22:20 »
I always find it difficult to edit metal surfaces like chrome and steel in Photoshop. When patching and cloning, metal surfaces appear to be even more finicky than skin as they start looking fake with even a minimal amount of editing.

Does anybody have tips for working with metal surfaces? My Google searches only come up with irrelevant results.

Or is the fake look the norm? I've noticed that many metal textures on stock sites look more like an illustration than a photo (probably edited with a surface blur). This look is probably preferable to a natural look where old metal is full of scratches, etc.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Keywords - Less is better?
« on: August 27, 2014, 02:23 »
Recently I started experimenting with this. I take a batch from a series and keyword half of them with all 50 keywords and the other half with 15 to 20 of the most relevant keywords.

In theory this seems like a good idea, as whichever one the buyer finds will lead them to "More images of this model" to see the rest of the series and possibly a more suitable photo.

In practice, I have no idea if it's working as I haven't sold anything on DT this month.

Send a DMCA notice via Yahoo. I found an entire series of mine on Flickr before. Yahoo resolved the problem within 24 hours, unlike Google who take three months to sort out infringements on their blogs. (This was the first nice thing I have ever said about Yahoo.)

Off Topic / Re: Cheapest new body? EU, Usa, Asia?
« on: August 25, 2014, 23:08 »
I live in Taiwan, but I find the cheapest bodies are parallel imports from Hong Kong and Japan. Both the 5D3 and 6D are cheaper than used bodies.

Canva / Re: Canva
« on: August 18, 2014, 01:26 »
Where does one see the status of submissions on Canva? I only see the tools for buyers and nothing about my images. (The log-in is the same for buyers and contributors, right?)

Adobe Stock / Re: Connection between views and sales?
« on: August 06, 2014, 02:09 »
I get that sales are most important, but don't the views offer useful information, too? If a picture has many views but no sales, I'd just assume buyers don't like that picture. But if a picture has low views, then I'd assume it was getting lost in the searches and try take steps to correct that.

I'm still pretty new to this, so I'm just guessing here.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Worth resubmitting video
« on: August 05, 2014, 21:21 »
Thanks for the feedback. The clips I submitted were without sound, as I usually try make one set of clips that meet all the agency requirements.

I'll try submit these again with notes. Is it better to just upload them again, or to message them to ask for another review?

Shutterstock.com / Worth resubmitting video
« on: August 04, 2014, 22:52 »
I'm not sure if this is in the right place as it's about video, but also about SS.

I just had a batch of videos rejected (1 out of 23 approved). The reasons were noise and unstable footage. These reasons are 100% correct, but I wonder if context matters. They were all taken during a typhoon with winds of up to 155 km/h, so yes the footage WAS shaky (even on a tripod). And some was taken at night, so the very high ISO was used. Even with these flaws, it seems unlikely that customers would get this kind of footage at micro prices.

FWIW, the videos I submitted of a typhoon last year were shot handheld and a lot more unstable. All of those clips have sold. (Reviewers don't seem concerned with the water on the lens.)

Is it worthwhile resubmitting with notes explaining the factors involved?

This is a sample montage of the clips I submitted.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Multiple MRs after upload
« on: July 29, 2014, 02:26 »
I submitted a dozen photos to IS. There was information missing in the MR. I had the talent fill in the missing info and uploaded it.

The problem is when you upload on IS itself you can only upload one release. So I got the e-mails saying that another release was required for the other person in the photo. So I manually went through all 12 again and uploaded the other release. Then I got the same e-mail again. It seems when I upload the second release, the first one disappears. I tried this several times just going around in circles. I even tried adding the new MRs in Deep Meta and sending the updated file information to IS, but this didn't seem to work.

Finally I just cancelled all of them, and plan to upload them again later. My question is, is there any way to upload multiple MRs without resorting to cancelling and re-uploading?

You have to make a composite JPG consisting of all MRs required for that image, so you end up with one single JPG containing all releases.

Alternatively, you can use DeepMeta for uploading, it will create the composites for you.

Thank you. Making a single JPEG of the two MRs didn't occur to me.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Composites and MRs
« on: July 29, 2014, 02:24 »
I want to make some composites using photos from a few different people shoots. This shouldn't be a problem on any of the other stock sites, but IS requires that the image date corresponds with the shoot date on the MR. Since IS doesn't have a Notes to Reviewer function, how could I upload composites of images from various dates without explaining it to reviewers?

Put a remark in the description starting with "NOTE TO INSPECTOR:" and explain what you did with the image.

Thank you! I had no idea you could do that.

Shutterstock.com / Views on Shutterstock
« on: July 14, 2014, 00:49 »
I've been making a habit of going through my images on sites that allow edits and changing things on photos that are not getting views. Is there any way to see views on Shutterstock? The Image Gallery Stats doesn't show it, and I don't see them anywhere else.

General Stock Discussion / Keywords in images stats
« on: July 14, 2014, 00:46 »
On some sites that have images stats there is a column for the keywords that buyers used to find the file. But most of mine are blank, "Downloads per Keyword: None." on Shutterstock, or "n/a" on Dreamstime for example.

What does this mean? Surely the buyers were looking for something! And if that something wasn't in my keywords, how would my files get found?

292
I find that using a mixture of both helps. I use Photoshop to make the background whiter by masking the subject and pushing up the exposure of the background. Having a good clean white background to begin with helps the workflow a lot. By feathering the mask it is a lot easier to do than cutting out a subject on an unsuitable background.

Dissolve / Re: Introducing Dissolve
« on: July 07, 2014, 01:05 »
I'm going through the Non-Exclusive Agreement contract and the part in Fees and Payments bothers me more than the royalty percentage.

"6.1 The selling Price for each individual unit of Oroduct...is determined at the sole discretion of Dissolve... Dissolve may amend Product pricing at its discretion at any time."

If the selling price can be changed to any price Dissolve chooses, then the percentage could be a moot point. They did say in this thread that the price wouldn't go back down to $5, but there is nothing in the contract to hold them to that.

The other sites TOS are probably similar, but none of them hold the seller to a 5 year contract.

Nice work there. Liked it along with the others.

You can Like my page if you find it interesting, although I don't upload many stock images there.

On Dreamstime, it's possible to change keywords after approval. Has anybody experimented with changing keywords on photos that are not getting many views to try boost views/sales?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Minor or Adult model release
« on: May 26, 2014, 21:33 »
I am not 100% sure, but an adult MR worked for me.
I did a shoot with a teenage model a few years ago. I shot with her again a few months ago. She is now an adult. I asked to sign a MR for the last shoot. It was an adult MR, and all nine agencies I submit to accepted it.

42,000,000,000 downloads with only 17 views! That's a really impressive feat.

DepositPhotos / Re: Depositphotos New Affiliate Program
« on: May 16, 2014, 03:09 »
They say in the e-mail that one MUST open a new account to sign up for the affiliate program. Having two accounts could look like fraudulent activity if they haven't accounted for this situation in whatever system they use to look for this kind of activity.

I still don't know WHY one user needs 3 different account at Depositphotos 1 as a contributor another 1 as a buyer and NOW one more for affiliate program. Listen buddy I don't know much about but Depositphotos new affiliate seems like a well designed scam and I am victim of it.

be happy with your referral program (what you have) if you don't want terrible and if you are going to use it make sure to take screen-shots of every activity and as I told you there is no way to withdraw your money no FAQ on website NOTHING

At the moment I only use the DT and FAA referrals on my blog. I think I'll just stick with those then.

DepositPhotos / Depositphotos New Affiliate Program
« on: May 16, 2014, 01:34 »
I got an e-mail from DP about their new Affiliate Program.

Quote
We'd like to remind you that Depositphotos has launched a new Affiliate Program, which gives you a chance to significantly increase your income.

I searched MSG for info and found nothing about the new one but lots of threads about an old one. I'm wondering what is the difference between the one they had and this new one? Is there any real benefit from using these links on blogs and websites?
