General Stock Discussion / Sheet music copyright
« on: September 16, 2013, 23:16 »
I'm wondering how photos with printed sheet music can be used for microstock. Even if the music itself is in public domain, the books would have copyright and possibly the arrangement, too. I've been wanting to take some like this, but trying to get clarification before wasting time.

Examples like this look like there may be a copyright violation, but it is listed as " this photo may be downloaded for all kinds of professional uses and in different resolutions "
http://www.fotolia.com/id/29267978

There are a few similar photos there. Is there anything I need to know about sheet music photos?

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime model releases

yes, it's a bit odd, but works well in the case of family and friends that you regularly shoot.

I often will upload to DT first cos I know there's no MR to fill out, so it's easy. For iS, even for my own kids, they want a release for every single time I photograph them (which is probably about 100 times a year).

a lot of agencies will accept a year long release for family members

This is all great news. I was under the impression that all the other sites wanted new MRs for each shoot!

I think they mean if the model gets older and moves to a new age group you need to submit a new MR.

Say your model is 24 so she goes into 20-25 age group. But when she becomes 26 you need a new MR for 26-30 group.

I think DT works the same as all agencies. YOu just need one MR for the model (except for that age group thing). As far as I know, only IS wants a new MR for every shoot.

Thanks! That is so much simpler. Although I think my uploads now have caused some confusion for reviewers.

I don't understand how DT's model releases work. Most sites want a new release for every shoot. DT ask that every model only have one MR for the age group of the model:

"Important: Ensure that you upload the correct MR for your model and do not upload more than one MR document per model while in the same age group."

Does this mean that DT works completly differently from the other sites and more than one MR is not needed?

Newbie Discussion / Re: Best site for RM
« on: August 29, 2013, 02:20 »
depending on what you shoot, alamy could work for you, but it's a hassle to keyword and upload, and you need 1000s of images to make a few sales.

Thanks Xanox. Alamy seems to come up the most often in regards to RM. I have about 150 RF images there and have not sold a single one. Considering the RM images will be a lot less, I'm not sure if it's worth it.

Less than 150 RM images? Do not even think about getting into RM then. The dance starts to get interesting from 10.000 images on in RM.

Thanks Tror. I think I'll just leave it on my HDD until I have enough to make some impact.

Newbie Discussion / Best site for RM
« on: August 28, 2013, 22:22 »
Hi

I have RF photos on several sites, but I am thinking about putting up some photos as RM.

I understand that each site will cater for a slighlty different client base and some prefer certain kinds of photos. These factors notwithstanding, which site do you recommend for RM images?

I assume a large series at one site will be better than splitting it among several with a small group of exclusive images on each.

I thought this site may be interest to those of you who have microphone images. This excuse for a blog seems to be running entirly on the traffic it generates from stolen watermarked stock images.

One of my images is is the site folders but does not appear to be on any page yet. I assume that means I cannot ask to remove my photo.

Yes, they are. I didn't of that until after I posted. There doesn't seem to be a way to delete my stupid question.  :-[

General Stock Discussion / Trademarks, logos, and Facebook
« on: August 12, 2013, 22:48 »
I thought agencies reject all photos with trademarks, logos , and copyrighed material in them. But I see Shutterstock has a few photos showing the Facebook logo. Why is this acceptable but other trademarked names are not?

General Stock Discussion / Rejected model release at Fotolia
« on: August 09, 2013, 02:33 »
I submitted 11 photos at various agencies a few days ago with a model release. They have been accepted at some agencies and still in the queue at others.

Fotolia accepted one photo, and then rejected the next eight (other still in queue) due to problems with the model release. The rejected ones had the exact same release on it as the approved one.
A few reasons I could think of for rejection:
1. It is dark due to the model printing it, filling it in, taking a photo (she had no fax) and then sending it back. Then I printed it, filled in my info and scanned it for upload. So the quality is not as good as a straight scan due the the photograph, but it is still perfectly legible.
2. Most of it is in English, but the model signed in Chinese as she has no English signature.

But neither explains why it was approved for one of the photos and not the others.
Any idea why they would do this?

Update: Five minutes after posting this, three of the files were accepted. (I resubmitted them with the same release last night).  Maybe it is a case of which reviewer you get.

Agencies usually translate your English keywords to foreign languages automatically, using automatic translation systems.

There are some exceptions such as Fotolia, where you can choose in what language you supply your keywords.

But I suggest you to use English keywords mostly, and use foreign keywords only as addition to English keywords. Such as use them for geographic names (mountains, etc.), names of cultural heritage (castles, museums, historical locations, etc.), simply for those that do not translate to English at all, or their non-English names are popular in country of their origin, thus it is likely buyers will use non-English keywords when trying to find them.

Thanks Jareso. That is good to know!

I've been using Go Stock and it seems great. I submit to several agnencies without a problem. There are some that don't seem to work, like Alamy and Kozzi.

What does bother me is that it "successfully" submits to 123rf, but my images never show up there. I wait a few days to make sure and still nothing. Any idea why it would do this?

Other than that, thanks for a wonderful time-saver!

General Stock Discussion / Language localization for keywords
« on: August 07, 2013, 00:28 »
Hi, I have a few questions about localizing keywords.

I noticed that some of the stock agencies have localized websites for various countries. How does the keywording work for these?

I live in Taiwan, so most of my subjects show Chinese culture and people. Therefore targeting Chinese speakers is sure to be better for my marketing.

Do the agencies automatically translate keywords or should I submit Mandarin keywords along with my English keywords?

Yaymicro / Re: Not getting verification e-mail
« on: July 23, 2013, 01:08 »
I've been trying to register at Yaymicro for over a month. I keep getting the message saying that the e-mail has been sent for verification, but I never receive the e-mail. This has happened several times over the last month.

I see someone at Yaymicro responded to similar topic, but this has not resolved itself by waiting like in the other thread. Any ideas?

Hi! It happened to me too when I needed to create an account. What if you log in without waiting for the verification mail? Does it work?
If not, it's better to send an email. You can find the addresses here: http://yaymicro.com/view.action?page=contact-information-press-american#a6

Good luck in your work!

Sylvia

It allows me to log in. But then I get the message to verify my e-mail.
Thanks. I will try e-mail directly.

No, nothing there either.

E-mail address correct, too.

SOme coins are trademarked as well like Canadian coins

http://www.shutterstock.com/buzz/legal/stock-photo-restrictions

Thanks for the info, Ron. These were British Britannia which are not listed there. But it's good to know about the Canadian coins as I was planning on lending some to shoot.

344
Probably the charts. Try resubmitting with an explanation that you drew them yourself.

Thanks. I'll resubmit them with my next batch with the proper explanation.

345
Hi. I'm new to microstock. So I am still unsure how things work.

I just had a batch of photos rejected from SS due to "Contains potential trademark or copyright infringement" issues.

The photos were of gold coins laying on top of various charts (made and printed by me).

Which is more likely the reason they claiming copyright issues?

When you submit photos with your own designs (like the charts), do you make a note of that to the reviewers?

Thanks!
