General Stock Discussion / UK Tax Return Issues
« on: October 13, 2015, 07:17 »
In previous years I have used the online CT600 form to file a corporation tax return and Companies House accounts simulataneously.

However I have just found on the HMRC website that the online filing service cannot now be used to report transactions and income from outside the UK. Presumably most stock sites fall into this category.

What is the most appropriate way of filing tax returns that include stock royalties (while trading as a Ltd co)?

Good to see shutterstock are making the most of the proceeds of photographers' work in what must be the most prime and exclusive office space in the world.

General Stock Discussion / Re: IMAGEBRIEF anyone? - 70% commission
« on: February 17, 2015, 13:25 »
They also seem to have quite a delay in sending out brief emails at times - i.e. a day or two after they are posted.

I have just spent (I should say wasted and I bet I'm not the only one) over an hour going through my archive to find images for an urgent brief that the site stated was open to submission for another six hours. Since it was an urgent brief I dropped what I was doing to deal with it as soon as the email came in to my inbox. When I went back upload they had closed it early so I couldn't even upload the images I had selected (I hold my hands up and say yes that's why I came here to rant).  I have one or two that are better than the ones they shortlisted so their loss.

In 2 years I've had only one sale. If the offer is less than $500 I don't usually bother unless I can gather images quickly.

I have to say Alamy are one of the worst over this and as I type I am in a 30 day limbo awaiting a "Failed QC" notice.

The thing with Alamy especially is that their largest customer base is editorial users - people who seldom if at all print images at sizes large enough for lack of sharpness (or even some minor camera shake for that matter) to be noticeable.

I bet if you were to look at the photographs taken by a lot of newspaper staff photographers, at full size you would find many that are slightly out of focus, ISO noise, not pin sharp or exhibit camera shake - the nature of their work is that often a shot needs to be captured quickly, they need to move quickly and thus a tripod or even a monopod may not be a viable option. Often too it means shooting in bad lighting conditions because in that area you can't arrange a shoot for when the weather is going to be suitable. You just have to pint the camera at the flooded field, the politician getting out of the car or whatever and work with what you are able to capture.

Adobe Stock / Closed Account and No Payout
« on: November 05, 2013, 12:30 »
I recently requested closure of my account with FT after confirming with them they can pay the outstanding balance (but with a $1 fee because its less than $50). I told them to go ahead and do this and I subsequently received an email notification that they had replied to my message and to log into my account to read it. I tried to log in but my account had already been deleted and they have not responded to my email.

Anyone else had a similar experience? Did you manage to get paid?

General Stock Discussion / Science Photo Library
« on: June 28, 2013, 08:09 »
I am looking into producing images for submission to Science Photo Library and was wondering if there are any contributors here who work with this agency.

In particular I am interested in what kind of (annual) RPI is typical and what kind of portfolio size is needed to achieve sizeable returns (i.e. $1,000 per month). I will of course need to upgrade my camera as I believe they require images to be at least 12 megapixels uninterpolated.

I have a background in science so have some idea of the types of images that could be submitted.

I closed my iStockphoto account about 2 months ago and was advised that the balance of my earnings would be paid out after 30 days.

Well two months later my account is deactivated and I'm still waiting for a payment. I have sent two emails to iStock chasing this up however they have not replied.

I am just wondering if anyone else has closed their account with iStock and if so did they pay you what they owe you? If so how long did you have to wait? Or do iStock just have an unofficial policy that they don't need to bother paying quitting contributors and keep the money for their own profits?

If I have to wait much longer I think I may start seriously bad mouthing iStock and Gitty on Twitter and Facebook.
