How large is your portfolio there? When do you start seeing sales?

Usually around 9:30am

152
I opened an account there, uploaded first 10 pictures, and discovered that the pictures shown in the Store section show the tiny watermark in the left upper corner, but when the same pictures are shown on other pages, the watermark is absent.

153
You can upload a low-res watermarked version to 500px and then a high-res unwatermarked version to the store for licensing on Prime. So if you're concerned about what shows on 500px that's the best way to do it. On Prime we use the high-res version and downsize it and apply a 500px Prime watermark to that.

Here's an example of the 500px Prime watermark. You can see how ridiculous it is.

"They make more money off subscriptions if buyers don't buy their quota. "

Well, there is a very high probability that amongst the 50 million images the buyer will always find some pictures to fill his daily quota.

That would be quite ambitious project and still leave a lot of room for manual intervention/override.

BTW, I'm not sure if Nikon Capture reports the actual spots in focus or just the sensor spots that were used for focusing.

Well, if the most successful older images are indeed pushed back on SS searches, many buyers won't waste their time looking for those images through many pages when they can find them quickly on the other sites using the "most downloaded" sort sequence.

this site lifts small images from FAA (900 pixels wide), Shutterstock (incl. shutterstock watermark), and other agencies and offers them for free. They make money by displaying ads on each page between the images.

I just checked the:
http://mystockphoto.com/photo and was amazed how many stolen images they have online.
They have many images still showing shutterstock name and original image number.

A quick search did find some of my images, but clicking on them brought me to MY Shutterstock image page with just a referral link added to the address. Not stolen, just someone racking up referral income. Might even argue they're directing more customers to our shots. A bit different than someone uploading stolen images in their own name. But good find none-the-less, keep smoking out the thieves!

Agreed, this site simply looks like a referral site to Shutterstock.  No big deal unless I am missing something.

Maybe the Shutterstock images all point to the SS site.
However, at least one FAA user reported on their forum that mystockphotos.com is showing her FAA images as free pictures, still including the FAA watermark in the right lower corner

For a while I was getting errors when trying to access that link, (I guess, due to many visits), so I assumed the portfolio has been shut down. However, now I see it is still up.

It would be a decent gesture by both agencies to inform us what action has been taken toward that individual (beside closing the port).

The latest Topaz program on sale is their Clarity plugin.

Not to be confused with LR and Camera Raw clarity slider, this plugin is useful for increase of images levels of micro, midrange, and overall contrast. The effect is somewhat similar to NIK's Tonal Contrast preset in their Color Efex Pro plugin, but Topaz Clarity has many more options, and it seems to be doing better job, when it comes to halos and noise. I have used it routinely for several months now (applying just a few of their basic presets), and successfully submitted quite a few images processed this way.

The program is offered till October 31, 2014 at 25% off which comes to $37.50 (regularly listed at $49.99). To download a free trial version or to purchase it, use the following link:

Topaz Clarity  and enter "octclarity" as the coupon code to get the 25% discount.

EDIT (Oct 20):
A short review with example images processed by this plugin has been posted on my blog at:

Actually, I found that some landscape images can be challenging, especially when they contain many small details. Sometimes, it helps to run the image through Topaz Simplify or other detail-reducing program prior to the painting process. Pretty much every image is different and might require a different treatment/preset.

I haven't submitted any "painterly" renditions to stock agencies yet, but I used some of the presets to enhance gently certain image features, and got them accepted.  I'm still experimenting with the program, and posted a number of those painterly renditions on FAA. What I found out that some images call for certain effects, whereas others are best left alone.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Acceptance of "paintings"?
« on: September 24, 2014, 22:37 »
I have done this week a lot of experimentation running the Topaz Impression program through some of my old images, and posted a program review with many examples on my blog (see below). Not having painted before, it is quite an experience to be able to paint by the one click method. However, it can be confusing trying to decide which of the many presets to choose.

Topaz Impression

For any aspiring painters (using their existing photo images), Topaz has recently released a new Impression program with various painting effects, including oil and watercolor painting, abstracts, old masters (Cezanne, Monet, van Gogh, Renoir, da Vinci) and others. It is a much more capable and customizable program than their Simplify plugin. You can run it as a standalone program or as a plugin.
For illustration, I just posted a brief review of the program on my blogsite with many examples of the painting renditions.

http://advantica.wordpress.com/2014/09/21/topaz-impression/

The program is offered till end of September at 25% off (regularly listed at $99.99). To download a free trial version or to purchase it, use the following link:

OK the question is, is there any market for "paintings" made from photos?

Correct! That's definitely part of the original question.
I wouldn't distinguish between the real and digital paintings (as long as the latter ones are done in good taste).

There is at least one of the frequent contributors here who happens to paint as well, and he has many of his paintings included in his stock portfolio, so I would assume that the paintings sell.
Hard to say whether they are bought for advertisements or for printing an art print to be hanged on a wall. Hardly to be used as editorials!

General Stock Discussion / Acceptance of "paintings"?
« on: September 19, 2014, 01:47 »
Photographed paintings (watercolor, oil, acrylic) are accepted by some agencies. What are the agency rules for acceptance of "digital paintings"?

IMHO, many "paintings" by simple oil and watercolor filters/plugins look atrocious, and most of them have pretty much the same generic look, but recently Topaz Labs released a new painting program called IMPRESSION which is much more advanced, and it looks very capable and extremely versatile. On their website (see link below) they show some impressive looking painterly transformations.

Topaz Impression

Similar to many HDR pictures that are overdone, one could create over-the-top impressionistic or other painterly renditions, but when used judiciously, it seems that it is possible to produce also quite subtle and quite pleasing pictures that could almost pass as real paintings.

Thanks for all your replies. I am going to start, and continue till experience proves otherwise along the following lines:
1 People (model released) sell better than things, I want to shoot as much lifestyle as possible
2 I need to find what people are searching for
3 I want to produce what most contributors produce BUT with my 'twist' on it; I don't want to be so different from everyone that no one would search/buy my shots yet still not be so similar that my stuff would be lost in the pile
4 I need to find out how to get on the first couple of pages of searches for my keywords - keywords, did I mention keywords?
5 It so much easier to type my resolutions than achieve them.

Wish me luck!

Luck doesn't count anymore in MS. What you need is - to sober up.
