Never a dull moment.  ;)

Another interesting way to protest would be to do something like what was done to CBS when they canceled the show Jericho. Fans got together and sent tons of peanuts to CBS headquarters in NYC until they agreed to do another season. It worked.

As a month long IS exclusive, I think I'm going to see just what effect these changes will have before I dump the crown. What matters most to me is the bottom line. If these changes decrease my overall earnings to the point where I think I would make enough as an independent to justify re-uploading to a bunch of sites then that is what I will do.

With that being said, I'm certainly not happy, and do regret my decision of going exclusive.

I'm just a small fry though so what I do is rather meaningless.  :-\

reading the announcement, doing the math....and then reading through the monster thread, the only thing I know for sure is that only a few people in there actually understand the announcement. same goes in here, the basic math skills of microstock contributors in general are sorely lacking...

So you are somehow reading this differently than virtually everyone else? Care to enlighten us all?

Another thing to keep in mind:
Quote
iStock will now set royalty levels annually. The levels are set based on overall iStock credit usage from the previous year.

So it might take 1,400,000 credits to qualify for 20% in 2011, but in 2012 they could very well raise it to 1,800,000 or whatever. Every year they can adjust the levels and I can only see that going one way...

I guess the only silver lining for me is that my commission wont decrease. But the chance of me ever going up to the next level is slim.

I regret going exclusive now.

This is bad. There really isn't anything positive about these changes, especially for independents.

I'm an IS exclusive so this is easy for me to calculate now.

3% of my images make up 39% of my total earnings.
10% of my images make up 65% of my total earnings.

You could also think of it this way: The less Istockers opted into TS the more money Getty makes. Buyers will be downloading more of Gettys wholly owned content which they don't have to pay any commission on.

I just went exclusive the first week of this month. Here is a rough idea of what it has done for my earnings and downloads. This doesn't include Vetta downloads because so far I only have 1 Vetta file and bunch of pending nominations. So this is mostly just from the exclusive plus and higher prices for exclusive files. My portfolio has not grown much at all this year.

I am fairly happy with the results thus far. Although they do seem to be rejecting everything I throw at them, which is starting to be very frustrating. This will be my BME on IS but will still fall short of what I was making as an independent. Hopefully more Vetta files will help make up some of this loss.

This topic isn't about whether the PP commission is fair or not. There are lots of other topics talking about that.

And for the record, I didn't opt into the partner program until I went exclusive. So no I'm not taking a measly 25 cents per download.
Huh? You opted in or not? It seems you opted in (unless I misunderstood) so you knew you were going to get a measly 25 cents, no?

Exclusives get more than 25 cents.

« on: August 28, 2010, 20:38 »
It is nearly September now and we still haven't got the partner program royalties for July. Is it just me or is this much of a delay totally unacceptable?

They get to make interest off our earnings while we sit here and get nothing. Yet nobody seems to be complaining about this. I don't see any reason why they can't pay us the first of every month or at least within the first week. It's not like someone needs to manually go through and total up what everyone made during the month. It is all electronic so they should have all the numbers they need to do payouts as soon as the month ends.

Such a long delay could be grounds for a lawsuit.

And for the record, I didn't opt into the partner program until I went exclusive. So no I'm not taking a measly 25 cents per download.

I remember when I first started at Shutterstock in 2007 I used to get like 20+ downloads a day with only 50 images in my portfolio, and all of them being absolute trash. I ended up spending 2007 and the first half of 2008 just creating trash for Shutterstock. Then I got into submitting to the other sites and stopped feeding the beast.

Sad thing is Shutterstock would still likely accept all that crap. I'd imagine 70%+ of the images uploaded on Shutterstock are subpar and would be rejected by iStock.

It needs a few adjustments but overall I think it is an improvement. As someone who runs a few websites, I know that no matter what you do whenever you make a change you can expect a ton of people to bitch. They definitely need to reduce the empty spaces on the My Uploads page though.

My video card sometimes gives me problems. Usually just unplugging and plugging it back in does the trick for me. Seems like it works for you too. I have an ATI video card so not the same as yours.

I am a college student and see watermarked images used in presentations all the time. Ironically, the one time I gave a presentation talking about stock photography, the person before me had fotolia watermarked images in their presentation. So it made for a good transition.  ;)

General Stock Discussion / Re: Thinkstock is alive?
« on: July 09, 2010, 14:28 »
It costs as low as $5.99 for a XXXL image on Thinkstock as opposed to $30 on IS. We only get 20% of the 5.99 as opposed to 20-40% on IS. So that is $1.20 commission from Thinkstock and about $7.00 commission from Istock. For the same photo at the same size.

That is a 583%-1000% decrease in earnings, depending on your canister and exclusivity. Of course when you have people like Shank Ali on the IS forums saying this is the greatest thing since sliced bread you know we're screwed.  ::)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Partner program sales strategy?
« on: July 07, 2010, 18:38 »
Right now as an independent I only have files with less than 5 sales opted into the partner program. However, within the next month I plan on finally going exclusive and may opt the rest in. I still haven't decided on that.

As for the different collections, I will make my top sellers E+ like most others.
