I only don't understand why they don't reply to my application ... I never receive an answer from them.

Maybe the absence of an answer is your answer

Maybe the image I took looks better during blue hour, that doesnt mean the WB is off when its shot at a later time. It also cant be that ALL night time images have to shot at blue hour for them be acceptable. Its nonsense.

I will shoot it at sunset and blue hour, since everyone is raving about it, including me. It was always my intention to shoot the image at sunset, its just that when I visited my friend and had my cam with me, it was night, and it looked like good panorama to me. Regardless of the blue hour.

I think that much of the time people get stuck on the "rules" a bit too much. Cityscapes need to be shot at the blue hour, everything must fit in the rule of thirds, all that stuff. I tend to agree that these make for pleasing images but seriously, is it truly forbidden to create an image that breaks those rules? Especially for less than $1?

What if Ron's image is a generally accurate rendition of how the sky above that place actually looks? Does every landscape have to look like it was taken with once in a lifetime lighting? Or has been processed in photoshop for an hour?
Again, why not let the buyers decide? Most people are pretty happy with cell phone pictures. Some clients even want that look. Why not work just slightly outside the box occasionally?

Maybe it does, to sell on microstock

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutter Stock Wait Time Changed ?
« on: November 25, 2013, 00:59 »
Hello,

Historically, the goal of the resubmission period was to give new contributors -- many of whom are completely new to stock photography -- a chance to go and learn more about quality guidelines, create new work, consult with experienced contributors in the forums, etc..., and --- to a limited extent --- reduce the spam of unsuccessful applications.   We try not to speculate on the future, but the goal is to maintain our quality standards while working hard to make sure that contributors have a successful first submission, and that there's a good educational path for them to have a quick and successful second submission if they didn't pass on the first try.

Our goal is to reduce that resubmission time period, rather than increase it, and to build an environment where people are more successful on the first try.

Best,

Hello All,

The wait time is two weeks.  This is something that we have control over and we have a goal to reduce wait times while ensuring quality reviews and submissions.  There may be some outdated text in the system, which we generally clean up as we go along.  If you've found a specific reference, feel free to private message me and I'll ask the team to take care of it.

Thanks!

Hi Scott, would it be safe to assume that the two week wait time may increase in future, the same as all other review times?
Its not the same, the two weeks is the cooling down period after an initial rejection to join Shutterstock. Its not a review time of images.

Yes, and I was asking if it may increase in future, the same as review times may increase in future

To be honest with you, I could make something like SymbioStock in less than a week, to give you an idea of where my skills are.

No one here knows you, your name is anonymous on here (mine is for a reason), people are giving you advice based on their experience, you do not seem to be offering anything innovative or unique. You keep quoting other companies that have tried and/or failed previously. You offer no credentials or supporting evidence of your abilites.

Whilst this forum can be negative and very clique based, the responses you have had have come from a wide variety of people and experience. It seems as though you are not saying "I have a great idea...." but more "What would be best for me to copy....."

Present an idea and then canvas opinions or support, even funding.

Leo brought Symbiostock to this forum, others have brought different reporting/submitting tools or other tools to make life easier for photographers, and received voluntary funding from the people using the services/tools.

Offer something different or substantative and the responses will be different.

Good luck anyway.

The size of any market is not determined by supply, it is determined by demand.

Everyone in the world could become a supplier but the demand to buy those images would not change.

I wonder if Alamy are getting kickbacks for each new account opened at Skrill.....? Kinda like referral payments? A % kickback for all future payments made by Alamy through Skrill? In my previous corporate career I used to have deals like that with my supply chain - spend so much and get rebates or volume discounts. Was an incentive to put business their way rather than a competitors - in this case Paypal. MAy not have been the best up front pricing or terms but I knew at the end of the year I would make my money back in one lump sum. Save 2% on every purchase or get lump sum at end of year of 3% from total spend?

From an admin on the Alamy forum.

Sorry if this isn't clear. Alamy aren't charging you here. The charge is a PayPal charge, which goes to PayPal. You can receive a free bank transfer in the UK or US, and if you're based outside you can get a free payment from Skrill.

But I don't buy this as I don't get charged by paypal for receiving payments from other american based sites.

Aren't the Paypal charges linked to bulk payments or something? Ron, you seem to know Paypal quite well, any ideas?

I read the mail and thought, boy, people must be having a hard time getting to the payout amount!  It speaks to sales volume dropping, more than kindness.

+1

More and more images, more and more contributors taking longer to reach payout and more and more people complaining that they are not getting their money. With the time it takes for Alamy to collect payment, and to then wait until you reach $175 could take years to make payout.

Even with current interest rates Alamy must be making a nice little amount off the top and now they charge for Paypal - is that to cover their loss of interest earnings?

Another step on the slippery road of stock.

An ED is an EL AKA Extended License.

And if the OP and others actually took a minute of their time and would give a quick look at the anything goes forum on SS then they wouldn't need to waste their time here posting trivial chit!

Thanks for posting the relevant links.

For most of us, however, there is no such thing as "a quick look" through the Shutterstock forums.  They are so convoluted that trying to find any useful information is like trying to find a needle in a dozen haystacks.

I guess if you spend a lot of time there you can manage to navigate them, but not everyone wants to waste the amount of time necessary to familiarize themselves with the ins and outs of the SS forums.

I am a bit confused why you would attack the OP for posting a simple question in the relevant forum here at MSG ???

Don't expect an answer with any level of sense or coherent reasoning!

General Stock Discussion / Re: more or less keywords
« on: October 07, 2013, 23:38 »
I've tracked keywords bing used on the 100+ symbiostock sites (something no agency helps with).  I only track keywords used at least 5 times on a given site:

here are the 4000+ most used keywords:
http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=401

the keywords used on the most sites:
http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=401

alphabetical list of keywords used:
http://cascoly.com/symbio/list.asp?list=403

To confirm, these are keywords the photographers had applied to their images, NOT what customers have used to search with?

Is it your initial submission application? Have you already submitted ten images for this?

Axel, I fully applaud your stance regarding not wanting to rip photographers off but I am rather confused.

You don't want to buy using exploitative sub model but you sell on the largest sub site there is?

How is that confusing? I submit my images to iStock, but I wouldn't never ever buy there (or recommend the site for anyone)

Rather hypocritical don't you think? Your images are good enough to sell there but you are too good to buy there? Why wouldn't you buy from there?

@ me

yes, thats right, am photographer too and the royalties of my portfolio on SS (or others) are just to support my apprentices (new gear / workshops / travels etc) and it does not generate my income. Thats why i dont care much about all these royalty constructs (EL / DL / SOD and all that quite difficult to understand "shares"). Thats the job of my apprentices.

I generate my income as the owner of a marketing company.

But - and thats the link - i hate it if photographers get ripped off and so i want to buy only on sites with fair conditions for contributors.
Got it, "me" ?

@all
Misunderstanding
we do not want to buy in bulk.
we need to buy a bigger amount but we are willing to buy as single downloads.
we do not want to buy as subsriptions because we dont like "exploitation models"
Fair prices for good work!

regards axel

You don't want to buy using exploitative sub model but you sell on the largest sub site there is?
You need to buy a bigger amount but you don't want to buy in bulk - isn't that what a larger amount is?
You don't care what your images sell for or what you get paid for them but you do care about what everyone else gets paid?
Isn't that like working for a marketing company and not caring what you get paid?
Would be interesting to hear your apprentice's pointsof view on this.

Anyway, off topic, apologies.

The advise already given is spot on, paying 50% or thereabouts except Symbiostock paying 100% to the artist.

Good luck.

How can they stop you talking about earnings - you are not an employee? Do they try to stop any of their other suppliers discussing what SS pay them?

90 day turnaround - maybe something to do with them not having exclusivity? Or are they seeing a lot of contributors selling rights on other sites and asking for removal of their images from SS? It would be interesting to see what happens in a case whereby you sell the rights and therefore have to remove the image from all other sites. Would the 90 day turnaround with SS stop the sale?

Social media - just formalising marketing strategy I guess, they already do it, this just confirms that individual contributors are happy for them to do it. Probably a lashback from Facebook in case any contributors are not on Facebook and therefore do not accept FB T&Cs, this covers FB and SS in case of any legal response from a contributor.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sheet music copyright
« on: September 17, 2013, 09:25 »
Make it up yourself, get a release, use printed materials from before 1900.  That's all I can think of.

A potential problem with this is that unless what you write is actual music, then the music industry professionals that would likely purchase your image will be able to see that it "doesn't make sense" and wouldn't buy it because of that - they would not want their customers linking them to poorly written "non-music.

Hi ,
we need to buy a bigger bulk of images for our customers and we dont like to support the worst exploitators.
What agency has the best compromise between good material online and good royalties for the photographer?
We do not mind to pay more than the usual "mean 30 cent"

regards axel

Judging by the size of your portfolio (nearly 7000 on SS) don't you already know the answer to this Axel? Which site pays you the most? If you are trying to find out which sites to join next because they pay more then just ask that question.

222
For starters, I don't think that page has been updated since around February or earlier - a lot of Valentines images in there last I looked.

But to answer your question, who knows really? I have had an image sell 15-20 times a day for a month and not appeared in there. All relative to time of year and comparative sales I guess. Some weeks when sales are low 5 a day might do it, busy times you may need 25 a day.

So lets see you have a football team right?

If so there is an idea for you and I am not talking about shooting the NFL players cause that is a no go pretty much everywhere.

But you can shoot something else like the stadium?

Lambeau Field Stock Photos, Illustrations, and Vector Art
(1-42 of 42 results)

The courthouse.

Brown County Courthouse Stock Photos, Illustrations, and Vector Art
(1-10 of 10 results)

Bay Beach Amusement Park Stock Photos, Illustrations, and Vector Art
(1-26 of 26 results)

Start by looking in your own backyard.

Can you give an example? I think we tried this before on the SS forums and maybe I missed it, but you showed some keyword searches that were extremely specific, but in the broader search, the area was covered.

Come on, show me the left handed widgets that need to be shot or some area that's lacking.

Don't give away any top secrets, just one example of an under covered, marketable subject?

I can shoot green tomatoes because red and yellow are all covered 17,000 times. But how much demand is there for that color variation? I'm interested in one subject or object that isn't well produced already.

And the point isn't anything against you, it is, with 26 million images, going on 27 million, pretty much everything that buyers want, has been shot and covered. And I would agree, if anyone can find something that's not, it would be in their best interest to fill that void.

So show me just one? (and everyone here will bury it!) LOL

SHUTTERSTOCK STATS:
29,167,816 royalty-free stock images

And what I am talking of is marketable.

And how big do you think the market, or demand, is for each of those search terms? It is demand that makes an image marketable, not search results. As already stated, you are using VERY specific search terms so of course the results will be small, but who is going to search using those exact words?

Apart from someone living/working in Bay Beach, who else is going to want images of their amusement park? Surely in the majority of cases, a generic amusement park will meet most requirements unless it is editorial and specifically about Bay Beach? Same goes for Lambeau Field Stadium (which you would probably need a property release for).

Uncle Pete has already tried to explain this and you just don't seem to understand - or choose not to because then that would mean you are wrong.

Go back to SS forum and let the grown ups talk.

I blocked symbiostock threads a long time ago, I forgot how many there were.  Maybe that has something to do with the declining quality of the forum?ETA:  Ha! I just un-ignored symbiostock and two thirds of the forum is symbiostock.  Back to ignore.

I'm curious, did the decline in quality start around the same time as your increase in snobbery and reduction in tolerance?
No snobbery or intolerance here, unless it's intolerant to want to see something else other than symbiostock threads here.  I have nothing against symbiostock, just the massive amounts of threads that clog up the forum.  I planned on unignoring them at some point in the future, I thought they would calm down a bit but I guess not.
