General Stock Discussion / Re: Do you have any sales in Crated.
« on: October 20, 2014, 03:46 »
I got my first sale on Crated today, $32 for the only one of my around 100 images there that has been curated by them. An abstract watercolor painting. I had the markup quite high the first months, when I got this one sold the markup was set to 30%. What markup percentage do you use there?

77
Joined FAA in January 2014. So far, I have earned twice as much there compared to SS this year. But my paintings sell better than my photographs there.

I've just noticed that images in galleries are shown without any watermark. They can be downloaded by just using the mouse right button so you can get a free image sized as much as 512x349. This is a nice blog size for free  :(

Are peresanz and I the only contributors concerned about this?
Is here anyone that is not concerned about that?

I have got 25 sales since April, out of about 300 images (no PNGs). Most of these sales are backgrounds, and some are nature photographs.

I noticed that images over 25 MB aren't accepted. Would it be better to downsize these stitched panoramas or to degrade the quality to get them down to 25MB?

Anyone have any idea on what the time frame is for being "curated" or not?
A week in my case.

I can't find any references to a POD site called "Canva".   What is it?
Canva is not a POD site. Check this thread:
http://www.microstockgroup.com/new-sites-general/canva/msg341072/#msg341072

82
Canva should perhaps be added but I'd held off on adding the POD demand sites because I feel they aren't quite microstock.  I know lots of people use them to make money, but they aren't really stock photography  (although I'm happy to open a discussion about that).  I also haven't listed ebay or etsy where people could sell images or t-shirts.  I'm trying to keep the voting list somewhat tightly edited towards microstock.
Why not a separate list for POD sites?

83
I intend to participate in the poll here next month, for the first time. But I miss Canva on the list. So far Canva is my best earner this month, better than SS, FT, DT etc

But my one sale on FAA this month beats them all. Why not add FAA and the other POD sites to the poll? There are discussions on this forum about sales dropping at FAA, so I think it would be really great if these sites were added to the poll, even if it's not microstock. Maybe a separate poll list for POD sites.

And I also wish there was a poll about which agencies people consider as the most fair-trade ones.

I joined in January and have got four sales so far, out of about 400 images.

Good to know something is going on here :)
Can I see your pf at FAA, please? :) 4 sales in 4 months (with beginner) is impressive!

My few sales might be just good luck, but two of them are very special art pieces that also have sold OK as microstock.

FAA could be better in many ways. But they do seem to sell. I joined in January and have got four sales so far, out of about 400 images. 3 of my sales are scanned paintings, one is a flower photograph. I have earned much more than the yearly fee already. I think it really depends on what kind of portfolio you have.

For me it seems to work better to upload when it is night in the US and Canada...

making negative posts stay on the page wouldn't be a problem - perhaps I'll change that.

I still like the voting though.  When there are 100 people saying one thing and one person saying another.. perhaps there are lots of people who don't feel like speaking up but agree with the one person.  They can then simply press the 'agree' button and the reading audience can see that a lot of people actually do share the same opinion, even if there is only one post taking that position.
The heart-agree button is a good thing...but I see no good reason to keep the disagree-minus button.

As I wrote on the Fotolia/DPC thread before I saw this new thread:

Why not just remove this vote down option? Is that anything grown-up people should be doing, giving minuses to other people??? Even if it maybe only means "disagree" in most cases, you NEVER know how the person in question will take it. And because it is even more anonymous than posting things using anonymous usernames here, some people may actually use this feature to vote down people they do not like.

Give hearts when you like a post, and if you disagree, do nothing or make a reply explaining why, or maybe just a simple "disagree", written with letters. A minus is something very negative... Really bad and hateful posts should be reported and removed, but that is something different.

This is not a union, opting out of DPC is not a strike, people who decide to stay on DPC for whatever reasons are not strikebreakers.

I am very negative to DPC. But I do respect anyone who wants to stay with them, for whatever reason.

Warning: When you decide to follow someone on Crated, that person gets a mail with copies of the top four images in your Crated gallery. And these images are larger than those on the homepage, but still not watermarked. I mailed their support about this, so I hope they will change that soon. These images are of course only given away to other artists that hopefully will not use them for free. But I do not like that!
I just got an answer from Steve via their support, and they have fixed this issue now. It looks quite OK in the last "new-follower"-mail I got, almost only thumbnails.

I think it is a good thing they also have an office in Europe (Helsinki). If they will print and ship from there.

It could also be like Stockbo and invest an awful lot of time submitting images and never get a sale. And you dont make it into the search, you never get a sale either.
Of course, we do not know yet if they will generate sales, therefore it might be a good idea to upload just a few images suitable for prints, to start with. If you do not get them into the search (it took 7 days in my case) it is probably not worth the effort to continue. And I do think they could offer rejection mails as well as acceptance mails.

Being an early contributor means advantages and disadvantages. Crated is beta, you could not expect everything to work smoothly in the beginning. But I do hope they will add a watermark feature soon. If this site will generate sales, I guess it is an advantage to be an early contributor.

I think they might be smart when they only let you upload 5 at a time. Maybe they want people to upload their best work only, the images best suited for print.

I thought the Canva concept was very interesting, so I decided to become an early contributor there last year. I think it took more than 6 months before my portfolio finally got online in April. But so far they are my best earner in May. I think that is because parts of my portfolio is well suited for Canva, but also because I am an early contributor. I do not have large portfolios (200-400) so the statistics about my sales may vary a lot, except for SS, where they are quite stable. But so far in May, I have got twice as much sales on Canva than on SS. I know it is a very short time, but the trend is obvious. Therefore I think it might be a good idea to become an early contributor at Crated also. And take the disadvantages with being an early contributor.

The portfolio links does not work even if I am logged in. I have to search by name to find them. And IPTC data still does not work for me.

My gallery: http://crated.com/Kerstin

That link goes straight to your gallery when I click on it (am logged in). I've found support to be responsive - send beta feedback (link at the bottom of each page) if you find a bug
I have found out that the links as well as IPTC works fine with Firefox, but not with IE.

96
Should I be logged in to see your work there?
Yes you need to be logged in.

I only have smaller portfolios so the variations in my sales are not of much interest, but the only ODs I have got this month so far are actually two from Fotolia. Have opted out of DPC and removed my best sellers at Fotolia, so I thought I would not get much more from them...have less than 200 images there now.

So the acceptance email I got was just a carrot dangling in front of me out of reach?

The beta-invite email is an invitation to join the site before it's release.

We base the curation on the content that is uploaded to Crated so once a user adds images to the site, they are reviewed and if approved, an email notification is sent.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers,
Steve
Why not also send an e-mail if the images are not approved????

Hi Stephen,

I filled out the application, provided a portfolio link and was invited to join. Does that mean I'm approved and will appear in search? Or is this step 1 of a process? I uploaded a couple of things, but I can't find them via the search.

Thanks.

The application filled out is to access out beta, so the invitation gets you an account. We base the curation on your Crated gallery so we take a look at your uploads and you will receive an email notification if you are approved and indexed into search etc.

Cheers,
Steve

I also thought I was approved when I had got the invitation to get an account, after you had checked my portfolio elsewhere. I have uploaded a gallery, but not my very best images, because you do not add watermarks yet. What happens if I will not be accepted with these initial images, will there be another chance soon?
