General Stock Discussion / Re: Pond5 "Good News"!
« on: March 21, 2019, 17:29 »
Forget Getty. We are talking about P5 here and their move to cut throat their contributors like many have done in the past hidden about bla bla bla.....retaining value....bla bla bla.....stopping the race to the bottom. Go exclusive if you want. I guarantee you that you will not make up for the loss you will make deleting your portfolio in other agencies. Whatever you do you will loose as a contributor.
Good luck with whatever choice you make........

Just got off the phone with them, let's see what the future holds for us long term shooters! Now I am posting a video about it on my site but I will summarize it here. I think as a business this is a good move and needed at this time in the industry. I am seeing my RPD go down and buyers shopping around as well. The 60-40 split does not bother me and I would have done something similar. If you are a serious video producer then this is a good space for you! If they keep the buyers coming this will put pressure on Getty to get more content but do be fooled Getty is the one who has shafted the artist for $$$. Pond5 has set it so I make more then they do if I am exclusive! This is the move I expected and aside from a few glitches I hope it does well! Now I did make a suggestion to add photo in the exclusive pack so we could advertise that as well! Watch the video on my channel in about 1 hour if you want more info.   https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwoU327B927MD49NNf16gxw?view_as=subscriber

Pond5 / Re: Letter to pond5 and quick Poll for contributors
« on: March 21, 2019, 13:41 »
That is not a problem at all the same way it is not a problem at Gettyimages. When you send content to Getty you can not send similar content to other sites. If you get caught you are out.

It says artist exclusivity some places and video artist exclusivity others.  Is this just for video content?  I assume it is but they license other types of media as well so just want to make sure I understand it.  Time to crunch some numbers but I think pulling my video stuff off SS and iS is probably the right choice.

FWIW I think content exclusivity just won't work, too many people would abuse it by putting similar (almost identical) content on other sites, it would be impossible to police.

And I agree 100% with you. Clear and concise. It is what it is

Agree with you 100% Bart.

My words to Pond5 ...

My first reaction is that I wish there was an option to begin uploading exclusive content moving forward without having to kill my relationships at other agencies.  This would create a more stable transition over time.  If the exclusive program is an "on-off" switch and I pull all of my content from other agencies I will lose 75% of my income overnight.

What I would love to do is upload my next batch of videos and make them exclusive to Pond5.  And / or the option to delete videos from other agencies and make them exclusive to Pond5.  I started as an 'exclusive contributor with iStock back in 2006 and it did not go well ultimately, the purchase by Getty changed a lot of things.  I would very much like to be part of the Pond5 exclusive program, however I would like to have 100% exclusive content on Pond5 rather than be a wholly exclusive contributor to only one agency.

Mixed feelings here but somehow I think the way they have done this is knowing that it will be just and effective 20% cut to contributors.  I understand their logic to the downward pressure of prices if the same content is everywhere BUT to ask us for a leap of faith deleting all our content everywhere is just not reasonable and an insult to artists because

1- If you loose best match placement in all the other agencies because you take videos down and tomorrow another Hellman & Friedman buys Pond5 you are screwed

2- The hit of deleting all the content in other outlet is an enormous financial hit that I think none with large selling portfolios is going to bet. It might take months or years to make same or bigger numbers

3- The 6 months is also a disgrace in spite whatever they say. We are in the digital age....very weird to act like predigital ones. One of the reasons when I never joined Dreamstime was that 6 month period. Period

If they would have acted with the wellbeing and with a fair deal in mind they could have just started with exclusive clips not Artist exclusive so that contributors can dip their toes slowly in the hot water and see if it works of them. Now it is a big russian roulette.

So bad implemented folks. I am sorry to see that greed has also finally bitten in a very short time the two remaining agencies that treated better their contributors.

Good luck to all with whatever decision you take

The lack of logic is amusing, since the very nature of stock footage is that it is never exclusive. The goal is of course to sell it multiple times. Will the client feel better if 99 other Pond5 customers used the same clip? But not if Shutterstock customers did...

Exactly.  "We don't like to see the same clip out there, so try not to sell it too much."

"Will those non-exclusive clips drop to 40% or would we have to delete all content from other agencies? I'd think about going exclusive, but there's no way I can afford to delete anything from SS"

It's artist exclusive.  You have two weeks to remove.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Getty debt
« on: March 19, 2019, 08:56 »
Getty is a very large company and has amazing archive stock collection and also exclusive contracts with major sporting
and red carpet events. That will be the saving vest for this company.

Now in the creative section of the business (images,videos,illustrations,......) they lost the battle long ago and I don't think they will recover. The best contributors specially of Getty Creative are gone and in the micro side of the business Istock cannot compete anymore in quality and quantity for similar reasons. Many top exclusives don't supply anymore and without those the archive is just more limited than the competition.

They forgot to treat well their contributors and it has bitten them hard to a turning point that they are not able to redirect. Maybe a lesson for all other agencies. Mistreat your suppliers and the road to perdition is 1 mile ahead.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Video in iStock
« on: December 21, 2018, 14:10 »
:-\ I really don't get any non exclusive supplies videos there. My average is 35$ on the 5 places I sell. From low shutterstock where my average is 20$ (my cut) to P5 where my average in 60$ net. 063 ?? just don't get it why people would not only waste time but also throw rocks to the other agencies that pay them much more for every sale...........................

So, anyone has sold a video in iStock for more than 0.63 usd? Non-exclusive. Thanks.

;D I see you have never shot or have not a clue on how to shoot footage for stock. ;D

Its more the finding of those locations.  Thats the hard part.

The guy probably have been using leftovers from paid-for jobs for years directly to amass this library.

Hire some some models, book a location, rent a RED camera for a day, shoot 8 hours of footage, chop it into 30-second bites. One day gives you 960 clips. A month of that gives you tens of thousands. (If you're not picky.)

366
The poll results might not be exact but they are a reference to consider and I think the trend is very clear.Exclusives are trapped and many would do more as non exclusives now if they had their ports established in the other sites. But uploading now is  a tough alternative that might take quite a long time to bring good results in images or illustrations.

The video is a totally different front. Only a fool or disinformed contributor would go or remain exclusive in the footage department . The sale power of Getty- Istock is much lower than Shutter-P5-Adobe combined

367
I am baffled .............. :-\

368
This is actually a good news.  We'll make more money from web resolution sales than Shutterstock.  Pond5 should've done this years ago.

Agree

Adobe is in middle ground in comparison with other leading stock video agencies. Much better than Istock/Getty without question. I even wonder why non exclusives collaborate with them. Fortunatelly I know many large footage producers that don't. Shutterstock comes next with their 5$ licenses and also a low royalty split.

But Adobe is still far away from P5. Much better split for contributors and editorial content makes them a better option. Also I get the best revenue sales from them. Although they sell less that SS the net revenue from P5 is much larger. Just today I sold another license with 166$ for me. So Adobe still has work to do IF they want to be the number one option for contributors.

Derek like so many other contributors on this forum know how to run a site better than SS,IS,GI and AS combined and are so sure of themselves they need to come here to express it. I doubt Derek will answer you as he is so busy consulting other agencies how to do it right and/or starting the next new big agency that will show the well established ones how to do it right.

Dennis, I am surprised you even tried to understand this cud.

First, I have to get into the habit of checking this forum on a regular basis and assimilate the tools so I can respond in a timely manner!

Second, while some folks may not take the time to respond, others hopefully will.  While Adobe (or any company) isn't perfect, I can say from personal experience that Adobe as a company cares about creatives and contributors and we're looking how to make Adobe Stock the best overall experience for both contributors and customers.  I'm always open to hear!

Thanks,
Dennis

General Stock Discussion / Re: Alamy "good news"!
« on: December 05, 2018, 15:05 »
In any case I feel pity whoever uploads to an agency that pays contributors a 15%. 40% is already much lower than the 65% they started. I have to say that the arguments of CEO for tye cut are quite poor. Alamy is not a high earner and to lower even more income for contributors might backfire hard. We will see......

The problem isn't so much the 10% (or 20% however you look at it) cut, since that's still quite a bit above the industry average of around 30% and much much higher than iStock at 15% on non-exclusive. The issue is that Alamy veterans are experiencing year on year declines on average $ per download. So it's effectively a double-whammy that is being dealt to contributors. This isn't immune to Alamy though...look at earnings on SS for 10+ year contributors.

I think they could have framed their communication to contributors much better. If they need money to invest in the business, why not take out business loans, interest rates are super low in the UK.

Shutterstock Pond5 Adobe and Storyblocks

Istock with their 20% and penny sales are not worth it.

Envato Videohive have now capped many contributors to 10+- videos week so if you take this seriously not worth it. It'is a pitty as they were gettying sales although their upload system was a nightmare much improved lately.

Stocksy Video I don't know as I am not in

All the others a big waste of time

In my opinion there are only four video sites worth uploading to.  I don't see much benefit to paying a agency distribution middleman.  I prefer having a direct relationship with those four companies.
Which agencies?

General Stock Discussion / Re: November Sales
« on: November 26, 2018, 07:16 »
Unfortunately I think the time for new agencies is long over. Be it 50 or 80% to contributors. Even Stocksy with all their traction, expertise, good will and excellent content is barely making a dent in the global market share, taken by the 3 big players. In the digital world one year late in the game might be a tough barrier to overcome but 10 years late is like the distance between the Milky Way and Andromeda, impossible to overcome with current knowledge.

This is unfortunate but unless something unpredictable and very disrupting happens I don't give any of the new agencies a serious chance to change the actual panorama of the industry.

I think we can safelty assume agencies like SS and Adobe will NEVER go back to its shall we call good days, hey days if you know what I mean. Right now there are two agencies being launched next month.
They are governed by people with huge experience and its 50/50 split with contributors. These are agencies who will gear themselves towards the creative buyers, designers, ad-agency people etc, etc and not to be mistaken for pic off the peg outfits.

Keep your eyes open it might be something who knows?

This is a consequence of globalization. You knew that when you entered the "collaborative economy" where microstock is an excellent example. You have to compete with the world and that means that you have advantages and disadvantages against people that live in other countries. I life  from stock for over 11 years now in an expensive european country with an average all this years of 5k+, the good years much more. I will be playing till I can and when it is not more doable I will look for something else.

By the way "microstock stars" that come from very expensive countries and cities like Denmark,London, etc have adapted. If that means to go to Ukraine or Southafrica then be it. Now to pretend to live in London photographing beauty or food for microstock is a suicide if you ask me.

ss is earning money..simply put there are more and more files and more nd more desperate contributors especially coming from russia and ukraine who upload zillions of files and the cake is simply spread...zero entry barrier and low cost make this possible.  micro apart one rare case i'd  say 100 200 big contributor will be just an hobby for all the rest.

Good for Russian and Ukraine contributors, if they work hard they deserve to be succesful at this game. Not like others that are always moaning about how hard life is because of others: ucranians, russians, the search engine, obscure agendas, bla bla bla.
Get your act together or pack you bags and go if you don't know how to swim in this sea.

ahh you don't understand the point....they work hard to earn 500 dollar because they can survive..im working pretty hard...im still working now friday at 2 o clock...the point is we are competing with people who pay zero   for shooting...probably even taxes in out cases and have cost of life 2 3 times less than us...but are paid in dollars and earn like us...is not possible to compete...
