General - Stock Video / Re: Selling direct on vimeo?
« on: March 26, 2016, 13:44 »
I just wrote to Photoshelter, asking if they would expand their services to include video.

They are not an agency but a very reliable storage plattform.

Actually I am surprised there is nothing out there for videographers, quite a few options for photographers.

For youtube or vimeo this could have been an easy add on.
More probably this is a cost question, volume of files and traffic. Photodeck has this feature, but i use it only for clients, not for videostock.

Every sale with usage of somebody's plateform is not 100% direct. They just give some freedom to do this and this can continue till they allow this. Once comes a moment when owners start to favor some contributors or start promote their own product. All platforms need surveillance to catch the moment of changes. But before - yes, profit from some win-win

I never give or show unretouched photos. These photos always will be used against photographer to decrease a price or to blame in attempt to not pay at all. Some variants for proofs: collages of thumbs for a choice. In this case editing will not take a lot of time and resources. Watermark on all thumbs. For small projects - upfront payment or not show any thumbs/proofs before. Had cases when client used them in profiles and it was very difficult to receive payment because the sum was less than for small claims court level.
Of course everybody has different environment and different level of precaution is needed. Contract should include all even small details, otherwise they can demand prints for a short session for the same price or something else.

Here many times already started discussions about donations of images. Many thoughts, opinions posted. I think you need to search this forum. Personally, i never witnessed increasing of sales after donation of somehing for free not in photography, not in any other business which proposed donations. This is only your choice, but think about your time, your eyes, your expenses. Donations i think can be justified when you don't expect a cash flow in exchange (a real and low budget charity for example, which can return to you as positively as well as negatively), otherwise it is a myth.

General Stock Discussion / Re: 500PX Core/Prime sales
« on: March 18, 2016, 03:23 »
They actively communicated for sales some time ago, but didn't propose nothing for us. As a photographer still cannot go with their watermark problem. And really there are not necessary complications for uploads to prime, core etc. At least for time when i was looking at them.

156
Client does not care about this. They see only "per hour". And often you can hear that "oh you want such money for a button click!" :-)

157
Any business is searching for the lowest price of supply. In microstock agencies have a unique opportunity to not pay at all.

158
Never ever i witnessed a real case when offering of free goods increases sales later. Expectations of next free offer - yes, for sure.

159
Uploaded some samples there, but never returned, no reason

160
I use it for portfolio presentation. Not all images are there for stock and for sale. Anyway, when noticed that resolution should be bigger than 600px i added watermarks. There are many apps on the market to do this. Communication - a bit strange, possible that it does not work properly.

161
I don't give them my photos already long time, but i tryed with DM, and date format was always not correct.
When uploaded finally, they demanded name of author and exact creation date for a medieval vitrage in a small village church, plus detailed description of the scene. IStock was not satisfied by century precision. There even the priest told that for name and date he have to do a research in archives, and he was not sure that it is known. And this file went to other libraries.

Software / Re: IPTC editing software
« on: February 28, 2016, 03:25 »
Hmm, I don't work in batches with Exifer (I believe it can't), but I do import data from another image, adjusting data accordingly. I think Irfanview allows batch editing.
Yes with Thumbnails, which come together with Irfanview. For series it is very suitable, for example for reportages.

163
Isnt't it already in EXIF?
Watermark and resize - another thing, because Instagram now wants images bigger.

164
Some of beautiful and high quality images i took in districts of Brussels where it is not safe to come with expensive gear. No secret. A policeman was with me. Regarding weddings i have regularly calls for false orders. The purpose - they want a photographer to come in not secure place/ not secure time. Of course, if for wedding they don't want to give details and sign a contract with identity proof, then no go to their quarters for "soire de mariage".

...

also, i read somewhere of how some ex-micro photographers have gone onto ebay to sell framed photos independently too.  i don't remember where i read it, but they too have gone away from microstock, and at that time, sounded like they are doing well.
at least i don't see them coming back to micro.

I searched through Ebay forms. In instructions (English only "sell as digital download") they allow to sell digital downloads, and this functionality is enabled in one of categories. I din't find this category in French interface at all. In the same time i saw some people succeeded to insert their photos with sending by e-mail delivery. Ok; But more heavy problem is return. With Paypal rules seller on Ebay is open to all types of fraud from buyer. Does somebody have seller experience to share here? Instructions on Ebay seems are outdated. I saw "refuse return" option taken out from the form.

Symbiostock / Re: Symzio is now LIVE
« on: February 24, 2016, 05:18 »
Conversations were usual - they visited website, they told that they liked fresh colors etc etc, then most of them stated that they already know pricing for this market in Belgium and big amount of photogs available. Some of them returned 2-3 times for telling that everybody for them will give all photos taken, all retouched etc. Once a couple wanted an album printed, delivered to their address included in demanded price. Crazy list can be continued, like mails from a british couple, that for reconstruction of wedding they are ready to pay a good price 150 eur and we have to provide a dress, borrowed in shop by us, not them. Lol. One can be tired with examples, i stop :-)

Yes, business - normal one - should be registered and pay to state taxes, social security etc. everybody can continue this list. People, receiving an excursion for free from one company, often tell me why we take money? (photosession on streets for tourists and businesses). And last week we had 4 demands for photography and video of wedding, 6-12 hours on place, for 150-250 eur. and even for free. That could not cover travel and other costs of course and was refused. The last ones explained, that they already paid a lot for registration, for dresses and restaurant. I said i am not related to those, they told they will find a photographer which will understand them.

Leo, same processes in real life photography services. We have more requests for free work than normal clients orders. People which have all necessary for life from the state or some commercials, demand other services to be provided for free. But to provide services, normal business should pay!

General Macrostock / Re: stockfood.com ?

This reminded me one "service provider" agency which contacted me several years ago. They didn't guarantee any work, but requested to sign an association contract with them, to loose the right to search other contracts and clients myself. Of course, i signed nothing.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Legal obligations
« on: February 18, 2016, 04:11 »
Like in other businesses, here any type of "agency" trying to intercept creation of relation between service provider and service consumer. To sertain point it is ok, but not further. They use any means for this. I saw somewhere interesting digits about unemployment in France and crazy amount of employers which could not find employees. Any of such processes is reflected in microstock business, including blacklistings.

General Stock Discussion / Re: How to close yay and veer accounts
« on: February 18, 2016, 01:20 »
I closed veer account several years ago and for that time it was enough an e-mail to support. With yay it was necessary to bring it publicly here, to have it done.

172
Good news. If i have now my old sets.

173
For big agencies it is less expensive to have own images factories for generic keywords. Other niches will be quickly filled in and kept only time when agency needs it to pick up

174
They do "royalty adjustment" when it comes close to payout. And now i have this accomodated by this e-mail. I think that in reality the files were downloaded and used. Their deal on our account.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Regular sales at IS
« on: February 12, 2016, 02:26 »
They automated payments and i think refunds too. Last months all what was sold was then deducted from my balance. Their behavior is not trustable at all. All refunds happen exactly in moment when balance exceeded payout sum, no matter in beginning of month or end. The total become again less than payout. Correlation is 100%!
