General - Top Sites / Re: My first month with Freepik !
« on: April 23, 2022, 08:11 »
Love or hate them, just this week we managed to get some exclusive inside-info from their Product Manager via an interview:

https://brutallyhonestmicrostock.com/2022/04/18/interview-with-esmeralda-banos-product-manager-at-freepik/

Alex & Elijah

Alex, why do you look into the cheapest of the cheap? Why aren't you investigating premium and boutique agencies that are actually respectable and that actually sell image licenses instead of using images to make money from advertising?
The only useful information about "freepik" and all those similar scumbags is "Stay Away". (And I'm giving it for free)

Had a look, no below 0.35 sales. Mostly 0.35 and 2.00 this year. Thanks for the alert.

Adobe Stock / Re: Mark as Illustrative Editorial?
« on: April 09, 2022, 02:05 »
The sample photo is very nice.
These houses look generic; so much so, that even the owner can't surely tell, "hey, that's my house". For that reason, I'd go ahead and submit it as commercial provided that here are no people, names or other personal, identifiable elements in the photo. (You can always clone them out.)
I don't think they will accept it illustrative editorial just because these seem to be generic houses.

Do a search on this forum. A few threads like this:

https://www.microstockgroup.com/general-big-6/freepik-steals-designs/msg570385/#msg570385
Here's a copy paste of my last post when they came up as I don't want to type it out again:

Why would you devalue your work by selling somewhere like Vecteezy? As someone who has been approached repeatedly by them, and even offered cash incentives to upload I dont understand why anyone who values their work would take the bait.

They are as bad, if not worse, than Freepik was at their worst point. Giving away loads of work for free for $5 per 1000 dls or sell your work to subscribers paying $9 per month for UNLIMITED downloads. Its madness. I cant really imagine a worse deal.

Also full of stolen stuff like this:

https://www.vecteezy.com/members/freevector

The owners are running a stock image site without even understanding how licensing works. They think they are covered as long as they sell this stuff as editorial, even though the uploader clearly doesnt have copyright of the images.

There couldnt be a worse deal/ site out there so very curious as to how they get anyone legit to sign up.

In that case the response from the person who uploaded was basically *o sh*t wish I'd read the terms as they have my work trapped for a year"

We should NOT be giving them oxygen and certainly not helping promote them with interviews.

Great post!

Brasilnut, if you give this crappy agency a go, you are promoting them.

Think again. As a book cover artist and creator, do you really want to be associated with this crap?

Also, many new stock contributors seek advice from you. Promoting a "free" crappy agency is not a responsible thing to do.

Thanks for your comments...please don't shoot the messenger :D

Even if some claims sound outright ridiculous without any reliable stats to prove (giving away free pics will lead to more sales of paid pics), it's worth listening to what the top guys in these agencies are thinking so we can adapt accordingly. Like it or not, the free-download model is only going to grow and we need to be aware instead of burying our heads in the sand hoping it will die off.

Vecteezy do have a "pro" section for paid-downloads which I'll give a go. At this stage, as my earnings have decreased so much I have almost nothing to lose.

I opted out all of distribution today. What a happy day! :)

How soon do you think these opt-outs will be updated and effective with the worldwide distributors?

I closed my account as soon as the penny sales showed up.  Done with Alamy, done with microstock.  I feel great about not being ripped off like this anymore.  But, I didn't need the small amount of money I was making.  Everyone has his own situation to consider.

This is probably the only sure way to opt out Alamy penny sales.

No need to deal with the ridiculous refunds, either.

I will opt out all distributors. All of them.  Opting back in is possible anytime anyway, but I don't think there will be any regrets.

Shoot new world order, transhumanism, central banks, social credit systems, loss of personal property. More bioterrorism. Frankenfood made from soy, disappearance of beef. Plant-based food. Big agriculture.
Excellent ideas Cathy

More ideas. Neuralinks, crypto, space travel.

From Elon Musk. The billionaire who also spoke about space travel, colonies on Mars, crypto, artificial intelligence and Covid-19 vaccines said Neuralink is trying to figure out if it can use its chips to get monkeys to play mind Pong with each other.
That would be pretty cool, said Musk, who is CEO of Neuralink, in addition to SpaceX and Tesla.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/01/elon-musk-neuralink-wires-up-monkey-to-play-video-games-using-mind.html

Great ideas. Thanks for the link, Cathy.
The so called "lifestyle" photography with lazy drug-addict multi-gender individuals chilling out is so OLD. The next trend is people communicating with machines and robots; maybe we can have microchips inserted also in the brains or our pets? To make them do things, or to communicate with them? To find out what exactly is going on in their minds? (May be more than just "food" and "walk")
Maybe cyber threats and surveillance can be combined with the idea of neuralink in stock photography.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Top Selling Content 2021 Email
« on: March 16, 2022, 10:21 »
Alamy sent out an email featuring "Top Selling Content Of 2021" at the end of last week. Been waiting for a discussion about the best selling images, but when I just checked out the lightbox, it was empty.
Any ideas what this is all about?
Did you check out the images? Strikingly many bestsellers were historic images.
I didn't get the email. Was it just if you were in the top selling content list?

It would have been nice on that list, but I think it was just a newsletter.
Since many images on that list were historic, wonder if it will be possible to be on future lists unless we begin scanning old photos (CC or ones we own the rights to)?

Very good ideas!

Maybe also
People carrying microchips under skin. Hybrid operations. Heterosexual people lobotomized and forced to be gay.

Plant-based food.

Y'know, the basis of all life on Earth. Surely people aren't objecting to Plant Based Foods?

They're trending.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy restrict Russian sales on request
« on: March 12, 2022, 11:45 »
So here's another way to shoot ourselves in the foot?
I don't know if I have had any Russia sales ever, but I won't ask my work to be boycotted.

Edited to add: Much prefer Dreamstime's take on this.

you prefer a take where you do not have a choice?  Alamy gave people a choice what to do, you still want to sell to Russia, No Problem, You don't fine we will limit it.  In fact this is the opposite of #CancelCulture, this is Freedom of Choice.

Check out their site. Dreamstime informs that ..."Dreamstime ....  will donate 5% of our revenue," meaning they don't take it from us. So it is THEIR share, THEIR choice.

so if you sell at DT you are forced to sell in Russia, no choice...

To ouatedeP:

The whole point of selling photos via stock agencies is to sell them. So I see no problem there.

Generally speaking -
This cancel culture is making people far too neurotic. People are now seeing evil everywhere. At first it was about boycotting Russian companies and businesses. Now, it is boycotting even your own photo business.

If your neighbor commits a crime, will YOU have to go to the prison?

What about images on free sites? On personal websites? There are zillions of images online ready to be copied for free. Most of them will be Ok for blogs and news. If anybody wants to prevent photos being misused, don't post them ANYWHERE. Not on your personal website, not social media.

But, the thing is, you are not virtue signalling if you stop posting pics in your social.... and Virtue Signalling is the King.

I hope stock agencies will do action. Russian photographers should be banned.

Extremely stupid idea.

This hate towards regular citizens who have nothing to do with the war is unbelievable.

Do people really live for hating each other? Are you happy now that you have an excuse for bullying others?

Off Topic / Re: Will the Russia/Ukraine war affect sales?
« on: February 26, 2022, 08:01 »
I'm heading shortly to a protest at the Russian Embassy in Madrid to get some content. Wish me luck!

Without getting into politics, captured some cool shots and uploaded them to Rex Features (now Shutterstock Editorial) and Alamy Live News. Shot about 1 hour ago so time was of the essence for these breaking news type shots.

I've never actually sold an image on Alamy Live News (only later as a regular stock), so hoping it will be my first.

Serious question. Of course you are legally allowed to take these photos and license them as Editorial without model releases, but how do you decide with regards to the safety of the people there. For example some these people very likely have connections to Ukraine or Russia and could be back in these countries at some point. They could be in real danger if anyone recognises them, and of course these photos are easily searched and catalogued by bad actors thanks to keywords etc. Just wondering.

Brasilnut already replied, but consider this: it's a public place, public protest, meant to be noticed! People who attend know they will be seen and realize that they will be photographed and filmed. Either by journalists, other participants, or bystanders. This content will be shown on tv, web, social, practically any place imaginable by just anyone. So how I see it, Brasilnut's photos won't do any harm, they just show what's going on.

And what are Alamy thinking, an UK/Europe based agency trying to compete with the Chinese prices in the Chinese market? What reality are they living in?

My English is probably not good enough, because I don't understand it. The only thing I understand is that people can use photos almost for free.
I'm near-enough English speaking, and it makes no sense to me either.
Don't worry about your English, it's just inexplicable madness.

Same here. None of it makes any sense in any language.

Doesn't make any sense to me, either. What I too understand is that our work was distributed nearly free and we should be ok with it because

"Future growth opportunities are on the horizon across all areas of our business and we'll share them with you at the earliest opportunity."

Come on Alamy. Instead of empty promises, do something real. Like, get rid of this cheap Chinese distributor.
