Hey everyone, have been shooting for some years with the Sony NEX6 for stock footage and images. Guess its outdated now as i see more 4K clips with coming out and i get more rolling shutter rejections.

My choices are the new sony a6600 or the trusty sony A7III. The a6600 has the eye focus in video, no video duration limit and some cool new video features. While the a7III for a slightly higher price is a full frame with crazy good low light capabilities.

What would you advise, which to get.

One of the main reasons i liked the official shutterstock app was that it highlighted files that got sold for the first, 5th or 10th time. It seems SS has turned off that feature as i don't get that info on my home page anymore. Or am i doing something wrong? How do i get it back?

Hi everyone

Starting this off in response to the discussion on the Pond5 thread.

Discussing on

- How do we push agencies like SS, istock, getty to offer a fair share of royalties
- How do we work with the agencies to prevent the race to the bottom
- What agencies are inherently unfair - low pricing, very low royalty, that should be boycotted
- How can we create enough of an impact to make the agencies correct this

The core ask : a better price and a fair share of royalties. This allows the contributor to invest more into creating better content by allowing more investment into
- Better tools, cameras, lights, locations
- Ability to spend more time on creating better content as they don't have to work a second job just to pay the bills
- Ability to spend more on courses, literature to hone their craft
- Ability to offer fair pay to models, location owners etc
- Avoid contributors from leaving, attract more skilled contributors

Second ask: Since we handover our media to the stock agencies for safekeeping they need to highlight how they will safeguard this media and it's unlawful use

How will this be enforced
  • By moving out of agencies that aid the race to the bottom. I'm sure not everyone will move out, but if we can pull enough quality content from there then the users are sure to follow.
  • By ensuring that we and artists we know are routed to the fair agencies because that's where they'll find the best content
  • Calling out the unfair agencies on social media, through discussions with artists, creative firms etc

Would want all your help on adding more points to this and creating a common writeup that we can share on petitions, mails, social media etc. The idea would be to ensure we get heard and replied to.

Having a strange issue with stock submitter uploading files correctly to Adobe stock but not submitting them. Have been facing this for a week now, I've checked that my settings are correct and I've not accidentally ticked Upload only. Some help on this would be amazing

Hi everyone

So I've been trying to sell stock as an individual for some time now and i see that many of you sell as a company rather than as a person. On the payments, taxation etc how does this benefit? Should i also be looking at setting up a company to sell stock.

General - Stock Video / After effects vs Premier for stock video
« on: November 25, 2018, 10:58 »
Hi, wanted to get some advise on if premier is a better editing solution for stock video. Have been using after effects for stabilization, little color grading and some noise reduction. I load multiple clips, make multiple compositions, edit them and render using adobe encoder. Will premier give me a better flow since the filters are all available there as well

Hi, have just started attempting stock video with some files getting sold. I've currently been a heavy user of warp stabilizer and am planning to get something to help me get more stable shots of walking etc. The contenders are

1. Gimbal like the crane plus ($500), expensive but one of the best in getting smooth shots from my mobile and sony NEX6

2. A small roxant type stabilizer ($30), marginally better than handheld. Need a lot more time to stabilize and can get only level horizon shots. This is mainly to bide time if at all.

What would you all advise? Is the $500 investment worth it?

My sales in the getty moments collection seem to now all be in the 1-3 dollar range, and because of the small exclusive portfolio it seems to be a very very low earner 10-15$ a month.

Am i doing something wrong or has getty dropped its rates (portfolio https://www.gettyimages.in/search/photographer?family=creative&photographer=amlan%20mathur#license)

What next, what other macro stock sites should i be looking at now, westend61 seems to be more of lifestyle pics for europe, I've been active on Alamy, what else.

Hi everyone

I've been trying to learn what moods my sony NEX6 shoots video. Trying to figure out which to use from the top two modes in quality

1. 25FPS progressive at 24Mbps : get more quality per frame and keep size a little low

2. 50FPS progressive at 28Mbps : get more smoothness and a change to make a slowmo later. But since the bit rate is not all that high might lose detail per frame.

The camera saves in AVCHD, I'm using after effects for my editing and exporting it to mp4 compressed

Microstock Services / Android: best model release app
« on: April 01, 2018, 10:18 »
Have been trying some model release apps this weekend. Didn't find one that allows people to sign using my phone screen and also exports to one image that micro stock submitter will accept.

What do you advise?

MicrostockSubmitter / Can't add two images to model release
« on: April 01, 2018, 10:15 »
Hey guys

Have been using the model releaser app (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pa.modelreleaseapp) and it exports the model release as two images. The problem im facing is that microstock submitter only allows one image as part of the release, and SS rejects that. Suggest, how do i solve this?

I've been shooting stock video and images for some years now. Am fairly decent at shooting and post processing. I've been considering joining a course to get better at it and boost my sales. Any suggestions on which ones are worth taking. I've shortlisted the following till now

1. Breakfast stock club's course
2. Basics of stock photography ebook

What edits do you make before you upload video for stock? I'm using after effects since that allows me to edit multiple videos on one go. What i currently do
1. Stabilizing
2. Contrast and saturation.
3. Curves editing

What I'd want to do and want advise on
1. Color grading
2. Something similar to the split toning of lightroom
3. Gradient filters similar to light room
4. Selective color saturation

What else should i be doing to get a good shot? Do i incorporate movement into shots? Do i keep locked on shots? How do i become a better videographer?

39
I've been using after effects for editing my stock videos. Mainly stabilization, saturation bump up, some curves and then encoder to convert it to mp4.

Was wondering if premiere is better for this task? Especially if i need to do 4-5 clips in one go

Stocksy / Call to artists 2017?
« on: May 31, 2017, 07:09 »
I've been trying to get onboard for a couple of years now. Have been steadily improving my work as well. How do i apply to this site? Has there been a call to artists this year?

Came across this crazy article today.

https://bizztor.com/royality-free-stock-images

So how do sites like this get images? Why do these contributors want to give them images for free despite a production cost? And finally apart from google ads, how do they make money?

Hi guys

Started video editing for stock and have just figured out a decent flow to it. Would love suggestions to improve this

- load up the 3 videos per session in AE
- make compositions for each and apply a premade set of filters
- start warp stabilizer let it work (takes a ton of time)
- drag vidoes to adobe encoder (this can only be done after warp stabilizer has finished)
- encode and upload using stock submitter

Would love to automate some of this. So that i can define settings and let it encode/stabilize overnight. Can't seem to find a way to do that. Advise please

Photography Equipment / 3rd party battery for NEX6
« on: January 15, 2017, 11:20 »
Have to change the battery of my NEX6 soon. Need suggestions on whether to go for a sony orignal (expensive) or a brand like wasabi (half the price)

Some concerns
- will it charge in camera
- will it hold charge over long periods of no use
- will it screw the camera
- how long do they last compared to an OEM

Have had a strange experience working with after effects with 4k files. When i export using quicktime and h264 i get a 2000X2000 file. I think this is a codec limitation. But then what other ways do i have of getting a 4k compressed file from after effects?

Btw magix editor pro outputs h264 .mp4 files perfectly.

Pond5 / No sales at pond5: over 3 years now
« on: October 08, 2016, 06:15 »
I seem to be doing something fundamentally wrong on pond5. I've had some video sales but NEVER an image sale, never, not even once. My stuff sells well on SS, iStock, Fotolia and even 123rf. What am i doing wrong on Pond5?

General - Stock Video / 300MB for 20sec, 4K clip: Normal?
« on: July 12, 2016, 06:42 »
Hey everyone, started stock video some time back. Have been shooting 4K shots using a phone. The cam file usually is about 150MB for a 20sec 4k shot. However converting it to .mov using H264 seems to bloat this to 300+MB. Is there a way to reduce the size, since a smaller size will allow me to upload many more clips per day.

Hey everyone, have been trying to get some panorama shots for stock. Experimenting with android camera and PTGUI and my sony NEX 6

Android : have no clue where my photo spheres are getting saved. Shot a couple and after processing they disappear

Ptgui and sony NEX6 with 16mm kit lens: this needs almost 3 layers of 10 pics each with a top and bottom to work. So almost 35odd shots to get a proper 360X180 shot.

Would love to get some advise on how to go about this

Alamy.com / Alamy - What images to send (exclusive?)
« on: May 22, 2016, 13:48 »
Hi everyone

Been trying my hand at Alamy for some time but with very little luck. So though I might need some advise on what goes where

1. Do I send them my regular MS portfolio? the one on SS, IS and all others (it is RF right)
2. I think editorial goes into RM with them, so does this need exclusive new images
3. I heard travel does well with them, if so then do you guys pick images from your shoot specifically for Alamy?

Looking forward to getting my first few bucks on Alamy. Thanks

I've run into a small problem. Using MAGIX movie edit pro i cant encode 4k video into a quick time movie (.mov) using the h264 codec. On selecting this the program goes back to the main screen and the encoding does not start. Can encode if i turn 'insert keyframe after every 15 frames' but that gives me a video with a black screen. HD files get encoded well enough.

Any suggestions on what to do. This seems to be my best bet in quick editing and upload.
