I think the changes by iStock seems logical. Month over month, year over year, they have been slowly losing market share to Shutterstock. Everyone can read the quarterly filings by Shutterstock, as far as I known, Shutterstock have grown every quarter since going IPO, and probably nearly every quarter pre-IPO. This is just iStock's slow march towards mirroring Shutterstock's business model.

I'm an exclusive on iStock, but I've definitely browsed on Shutterstock. There are some really amazing high quality imagery there. Which are not sold at a premium. So it doesn't make a lot of sense of iStock to have Vetta when something similar can be found at Shutterstock for a whole lot less.

This last past month of sales of August on iStock has been brutal. I've been there many years and I was kind of shocked how bad that month was. I've seen declines, but not like that. I will stay exclusive with iStock for now, because I'm not confident the grass is greener on the independent side. But as the commoditization of stock photos continues to be advance, it is only a matter of time before I drop the crown. I'll see how the sales track for Sep and Oct, then decided if I might be better off on the other side.

Regardless if you think $.50 per image per month is reasonable, well that is up to you. I've shared what is true for me as well as my friend. As both of us have established professional backgrounds as graphic designers, there is natural understanding of what graphic designers look for in stock. We spend our production time wisely, concentrating on imagery that we have a confidence that will have some sort of buyer appeal, which can be done by looking in current trends in advertising, etc. In particular, my friend concentrates on composites that display a concept/idea. We both focus on execution. We definitely don't just walk down the street and take photos of random buildings and objects and upload that as stock. While that stuff is sellable (and I've shot them too in the past), it won't necessarily sell in the quantity as an image that has been thought out and given good execution.

My back of the hand calculation of my portfolio and knowledge about my friend's portfolio is that we both average about $0.50 per image per month. Thus 200 images might be the number your looking for. The 20/80 rule definitely holds. Most don't sell, but a few sell well.

First time poster, because I generally have no reason to post. Anyway, I've watched all the videos. 2013 and 2011. It is pretty interesting. But then I'm the kind of person that is happy if I read a 300 page book and only found one thing of interest. I think there is a little bit of something for everyone at all levels. Some of it is very interesting and some of it is quite boring. But that is all in the eye of the beholder. I watched it over several days while I was retouching photos, so no big deal. I spent the money on the video because I looked at it as doing research. Just like I visit this website.
