What is everyone's average dollar per download at each site? I assume this is not a personal question. I saw on this other thread that some of you are making between $0.70 and $1.10 per download at shutterstock alone. I make $1.90 as an exclusive on iStock. If those are numbers at shutterstock are consistent with a fair number of you guys, it for sure makes no sense to be exclusive to iStock anymore.

Though even if it was really obvious I should go independent, I might still sit on it for sometime, I might be pretty busy with other things in the coming months.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Keywording software on Mac?

Thanks for the comments. Since my initial post, I've learned to do a 'preference' reset for Bridge. The bug seems to have gone away for now. Fingers cross.

General Stock Discussion / Keywording software on Mac?
« on: February 16, 2020, 12:48 »
Typically I use Adobe Bridge to keyword on my Mac. I have a huge list of saved keywords in the keyword panel and I just search for the ones I want to use and select them from different categories.

I realized today that as I go from category to category selecting prewritten keywords, sometimes all previously selected keywords would get wiped out from the metadata of those selected files. The difficult part is that this glitch isn't repeatable. It just randomly happens on different files and I have no idea why. I can even go through the exact same steps of choosing keywords on the same files and it won't repeat. But I've seen a bunch of different files lose all previously entered keywords.

I'm using Adobe Bridge 2020, so I downloaded AB 2019 and saw the same glitch happen there. Again, not repeatable by following the exact same steps a second time.

Clearly at this point Bridge is not trustworthy. What are my other options for keywording on a Mac. I had a look at xpikes but it doesn't seem to allow a pre-saved list of keywords to choose from. I don't want to use any software that requires me to do a search on shutterstock/adobe stock and then select a bunch of similar files and then manually choose which keywords I want. I just want to presave keywords in the software and then select from it as needed, just like I can do in Bridge.

BTW I don't seem to want to use lightroom to keyword. I've taken a look, I don't seem to like their interface. It doesn't seem to be anywhere near as easy to use as Bridge.

Also I've looked at the mac software on this page
https://shuttermuse.com/best-digital-asset-management-software/
that suggested DAM software, then I went to youtube and search for videos on each mac software's keyword features and they all look incredibly time consuming to use. Thus all inferior to presaved keywords in Bridge that I can quickly search and select.

Thanks.

IMHO...looks more like a personal home video, versus something made specifically for consumption on youtube. I skimmed through it. I didn't personally find it interesting to watch. My understanding of how youtube works is your video will be tested on a select amount of people and the algorithm sees how they interact with your video. If youtube notices a high level of engagement, then that video would pop up on more people's feed, and if enough of those people engage with your video, then the algorithm would again populate your video on even more people's feed, and so forth. In addition to producing actually interesting content, there is also the art of the click bate thumbnail. No one is going to watch if they don't click. They only click if the thumbnail seems interesting. Also it seems to me, youtube isn't worth the effort unless one can generate at least hundreds of thousands of views on every video. Info on the internet says 1 million view could earn somewhere between $3-8k depending on how desirable the viewers are for advertising purposes.

I would pay for a book written by one of the best microstock photographers. Since they prefer to sell photos than writing books to earn money, I will not...  ;)

You don't need  a book, or even pay. The obvious answer is produce content that lots of people want. What is that you ask? Just do a search on any term that interest you and look at the 'best match'/'most relevant' results. That will give you plenty of clues on what is trending. Further more think about how to spend as little time on it as possible on creating the content and keywording it.

Which of the big earning stock agencies accept editorial stock footage?

59
Well 'apparently' Adobe Stock search engine will penalize you for having anywhere near 50 keywords. They talked about it in the webcast some months back. My vague memory was them saying something like 30 is the sweet spot. I don't sell on Adobe Stock, so as often as possible I add as close 50 as possible. The thing is, you never quite know what keywords become most popular in finding any one of your images.

Photography Equipment / Aerial photos without a drone
« on: December 25, 2019, 02:25 »
I just bought the DJI Maverick Mini, so I have that part covered. What I'm thinking about now is I would enjoy getting some aerial photos of people in the city, over crowds. My understanding is flying drone over people is generally frowned upon, and depending on the location it could be illegal. So if I can't use the drone, I'm wondering about what my other options are. I just ordered a 3 meter selfie stick for my GoPro. I was thinking I could just extend it at a 45 degree angle over city crowds. Obviously no where near as high as a drone would be, but better than nothing.

Any other creative ways to get aerial photos without a drone?

General - Stock Video / How to make videos?
« on: December 21, 2019, 17:54 »
I might have asked some variation of this question 6 months ago, but what I want to know is a little different now, same same but different.

In January I'll be in Australia, and February perhaps some parts of South East Asia.

I have very minor interest in shooting videos either for stock or Youtube. Maybe more for youtube, like a vlogger, since it seems if I could ever figure out how to get a lot of subscribers, the money is infinitely better on Youtube.

Right now I only know how to do stock photos. I don't do anything else but photos. I do also know how to do stock illustrations, though I no longer do it.

I know as much about video as a 5 year old. I don't know anything because I've never been interested in learning. I have a Nikon D800 I could bring, but most likely I might only bring my iPhone 11 Pro, which some people on the internet says records great video. I mostly don't like carrying around a heavy camera. I also have a GoPro 7 with a mechanic gimbal, which I've only used to take photos.

Could you please just write down some subject matter that I should google search on. I can do the research on my own, I just hope you guys would help me shortcut the process by telling me what to search for.

Also if I did want to shoot some travel videos for stock, what kind of things should I shoot that is high demand? I'm likely to be two different states in Australia. Traveling by car. Then I might hope over the ocean to New Zealand, or I might head straight back stateside, or I might head north to either Singapore/Thailand/Japan/Hawaii then back to the 48 contiguous states. BTW I love to go hiking, so I'd be looking for wilderness areas/mountains to go for a hike.

Thanks!!

What are the DL numbers for lower end of 2020 targets?

How many DLs are required to get 30%? Do exclusives still get 25% at least?
Well, yes, for iS sales, but of course 20% for Getty sales, which presumably buyers are being pushed towards.

Anyway:
Photos: Default - 25%;  30% - 800;  35% - 8,500;  40% - 34,500;  45% - 515,000
Illos:    Default - 30%;                     35% - 7200;   40% - 26,000;  45% - 172,000
Videos: Default - 25%;  30% - 300;  35% - 2,000;  40% -  4,600;    45% -  35,000

Thanks! You are always doing due diligence for others. I apologize for being lazy. :)
Didn't you get the email?
I've opted out of custom briefs etc, but still got this one, which is fair enough.

Yes, I got the email. But it requires me to log in. I am too lazy to look for password.  ;)

Photography Equipment / Re: The Best Unlimited Cloud Storage?
« on: December 16, 2019, 11:08 »
I keep separate folders for all the JPEGs that have been created for stock uploads on a different physical drive to my original Raw shots. I back up the Raw ones continually onto an external drive, but I've been uploading all the JPEGs to the free Amazon prime drive over the past weeks. I now have 25000 images for 159GB of storage that is all free (obviously I pay for Prime). It all happens in the background - whenever I add a new JPEG to my stock upload folders, it gets backed up to their cloud. I can see them and download them wherever I am, which also helps if someone actually buys an image from my personal stock website and something goes wrong with the delivery!

Steve

Steve, that sounds like a reasonably simple and effective approach. I may give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Backblaze backups your entire machine, not just photos. I have Amazon Prime, but I still rather use backblaze. Also you can now pay extra on backblaze to not have to plugin your external hard drive once per month.

Taxes. In the USA filing under a corporation is more tax efficient than filing under a sole trader. As a sole trader all your income is subject to (un)employment taxes, whereas filing under a corporation and paying yourself a reasonable market rate salary, whatever is left over is not subject to employment taxes. Though for this to work one would need to earn a reasonable income to make it worth your while in extra effort. Anyway, I file my stock income under a corporation.

I still wonder why anyone would buy my plain-Jane tree photo when there are so many better shots.  But it just goes to show you that you never know what is going to sell and what is not.

Sometimes the buyer deliberately want shots that are not 'better' :)
I had two photos appear Saturday Night Live in the last 12 months. Both were boring photos of people. Neither of them would be considered super attractive. Just average looking. Thus they clearly wanted show average looking people photos in their skit.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock complying with Chinese censors

Why bite the hand that feeds you? Yes I know China is an evil dictatorship. I would not want to live there. But it is seemingly a well managed dictatorship, as long as you are han Chinese your lives have gotten better over the decades. If you are Muslim, well that is just really unfortunate, open air concentration camps and all. Which comes back to why bite the hand that feeds you, I was reading about how pretty much all the muslim governments around the world keeps their mouth shut about China's repression of its Muslim minority, they don't want to bite the hands that feed them. China is too important to them economically. I read that a few years ago Turkey's president said something about China's treatment of its Muslims and then China let Turkey know how displeased they were by Turkey's comment and Turkey has never brought it back up again.

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Stock 2020 Visual Trends
« on: December 11, 2019, 19:04 »
What is in it for the contributor to produce these kinds of context to fill in gaps in Adobe's collection? My probably wrong opinion is that there is no real demand for these kinds of images, despite what Adobe says. My uninformed opinion is just observations from what I see in mass-media every day. There is nothing wrong with producing these types of images. I'm more asking from an opportunity cost point of view. As in I could spend time on creating this kind stuff and get like 1-2 sales in a year or I could do something obviously more popular and get 20 sales in a year for the same amount of time and energy spent.

I've never owned a camera with 2 card slots and have never had a card fail. But I do understand cards have failed for some people. I think a lot of photographers carry two cameras. Mostly to safe guard the main camera failing during a job.

Why not upload a few in June, July, August, Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec. Then you have covered all your bases.

GLStock / Re: GLStock does not pay ?
« on: December 10, 2019, 14:08 »
Only ten shopping days left and the reserve has not been met @ $5,000. Come on, someone here must have $5,000 to buy a working agency and show us how to do it right? Start with 50% commission because at 40% GL is going broke. LOL  ;D

Here is a question. Why don't any other  agencies buy it? Migrating libraries dificulties, previous pending financial issues or just similar content? Even the glamorous "dear customer now GLStock is part of our growing family... Blah blah blah..." worths the five thousand dollars. It actually costs less than a full advertising campaign in some cases.

?

As a company that basically makes no money, it isn't worth anything. But to replicate all the work that has gone into it is worth more than $5,000. If I knew how to code, I'd buy it. But not knowing how to code makes it kind of useless to me. I did take a look at their images online and the selection isn't that great. My guess is that without exclusive content, there is no way for GLStock to compete. It is too small and thus worth nothing.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Shutter stock rejections arrgghh
« on: December 04, 2019, 17:24 »
If we can rule out AI doing the reviewing (which I have no idea), then perhaps the really fast review time could be due to them having a lot of inspectors in 3rd world countries who are paid by each review. So they just sit by the computer waiting for images to hit the review queue. I've read that is how it works on Amazon's Mechanical Turk.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Is this a stock agency?
« on: November 26, 2019, 19:05 »
I had a quick look though just now, it appears it is a way for you to efficiently submit your work to publishers for 'exposure'. You give your work away for free, they credit you in their publication, and you hope to get commission work in the future from the exposure. For anyone that maybe reading the publication and likes your style, they may contact you for commission work. And/or you save a tear sheet and plug it in your own marketing efforts, ie your website, and say you have been published in "GQ" or "Real Simple", etc. Being able to say you've been published in a big publication can be a helpful in getting perspective clients for commission work.

Under their pricing page, both you the content creator and the publisher both pay this website to be on their platform.

Giving your work away to large publications for free for exposure is not uncommon. Though of cause one would only do it if there is a need for exposure. Exposure would be good for someone just starting out and is still building out a name.

I looked through their list of current publishers, it is almost entirely of no-name brands. Thinking through it some more, big publishers probably don't really need free work and it may not make sense for their work flow. Meaning the inconsistency in quality of free work would actually make it quite expensive in human labor to deal with for a publisher, versus just hiring pros like they have always done. With pros, they know what they are getting, and they get want they want in the time frame that they want.
