Selling Stock Direct / Cafepress use stock?
« on: January 26, 2017, 11:26 »
I found a shot of mine on cafepress for sale as a poster. I know some micro sites sell through allposters etc. But, I am not sure about cafepress. Just checking before I report it. Any info is much appreciated!

I am embarrassed to admit, it did not occur to me to look at the address. Thank you Shelma! I will keep that in mind for future reference  :)

Curious, if anyone knows which stock agency freeart.com may be affiliated with. They have thirteen pages of my port for sale on their site....

Bigstock.com / Re: account hacked ???
« on: August 04, 2016, 15:18 »
I also could not log in as they would not accept my password. Had to change password and was able to log back in without issue. But, I am very concerned over personal info and how password was changed in the first place. Sent email to bigstock. Waiting for reply.... I am really hoping this was an internal glitch and not a hack.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: What will be better for a begginer?
« on: January 11, 2016, 12:00 »
I started with and continue with the t3i. I shoot mostly landscapes and my personal experience  with the Rebel series has been..

Disadvantages: incredible amount of noise above ISO 100, shutter lags in extreme low temps (below -10 Fahrenheit),  hot pixels/noise in exposure longer than two minutes, it's not considered weatherproof, AF system is not that great.

Advantages:I do like the articulating screen, (though some consider that unprofessional), it is nice to have for a low angle landscape shots when I don't want to wallow around on the ground to capture it. The camera is user friendly, and it has held up well to the abuse I have put it through.

The lens is absolutely critical! You mentioned the 10-18. I just picked one up for landscapes and I am very happy with it. But, it is a wide angle and not ideal for all of the genres you mentioned.

As with any camera, you will get better results when you take control and do not count on the camera to make the decisions. You will not get professional grade photos shooting auto on a beginners DSLR. Canon or Nikon best of luck to you  :)

I use the t3i for stock and it is sufficient. But, plan on having to buy a decent lens. The Rebel series kit lens is awful!

I get what your saying about a safety net to avoid blown highlights. But, if the camera is on auto ISO(I would leave it on lowest if you are concerned with overexposure), and you want to set a specific exposure and aperture. What option is left for the camera to compensate with? I am not being argumentative, just curious that I am seriously missing a great option.....

8
I have a Rebel and it is not available in Manual. Have to use Av, Tv, P or A-depth.

9
I am confused. Shooting in Manual leaves you in complete control of the exposure. That is probably why this option is not available in that mode. What would exposure compensation do that you could not accomplish in Manual?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Did subs just start?

If you are not in the PP and have an olive cap on a bar, that's Getty360. There are hugely varying amounts to be gained from Getty360. I've only had one, $50, the very first month they were out. I did identify the file, so that I could contact CR, but I can't remember how.
There has been no notification that iS subs have started, and I don't remember seeing any indication of any higher than stated payments on iS subs.

I am non-exclusive, so I am in the PP. As far as I can tell the PP payouts ended a few days ago. It showed I have 8 DL's for April 22nd in the PP. Today is when the 46.17 showed up under the green bar earnings for April 22nd. However, the number of downloads did not increase only the earnings.  It is a mystery to me. I just hope it is not an error!

I just had one pop up for 46.17 on the 22nd under PP. Doing the happy dance, that is astronomical for my humble little port :) However, I am curious where it came from. Is it IS subs or Getty? I do not know....

Newbie Discussion / Minor or Adult model release
« on: May 26, 2014, 19:46 »
I have pictures taken of my son when he was 16-17 years old. However, he just turned 18. Wondering if we should use minor or adult release form?

I am also a newbie to stock with just over a year in. Initially, I thought I would be able to quit the day job. I was delusional. But, I am obsessed with photography(started about two years ago) and stock has been a great way to learn and improve. This is a fantastic forum with interesting and differing opinions on the stock industry and you can learn a lot on here.  I am slightly voyeuristic in that I read all the posts but do not comment as I feel I have not earned that right. But newbie to newbie here is my advice:

1. Keep trying to get into SS. I only have a humble 120 photos in port with a pathetic acceptance rate.  But, I have learned ALOT from those rejections.

2. You said you do landscapes. Find somebody/anybody to model for you. Landscapes are a tough sell on stock but if you include a person in that landscape shot, it seems to add commercial value. If you only know ugly people shoot at sunset as silhouettes or shoot them facing away looking at the view. You don't need a beautiful model.

3. Do not upload pictures that you would be embarrassed to claim. Certain sites have lax standards and take anything. In the beginning I uploaded anything and everything, I cringe when I look at some of them. But, they have sold a few  so now I hesitate to delete them and it has become a conundrum. Just don't do it.

4. Do not quit your day job!!!  I am a nurse in an inner city hospital and it is a tough gig. Believe me if I could quit I would, but that is completely unrealistic. My revised goals are to consistently increase my portfolio, shoot something different every week, learn from the rejections, and see an increase in sales every month.

Best of luck to you in your venture and thank you to all the pro's for sharing your valuable advice.

Newbie Discussion / IS I am confused..
« on: January 15, 2014, 07:15 »
I am new to stock and photography, and I am confused with IS. I have multiple questions:

If they have not sorted out the issues with Oct/Nov reports can we expect a PP earnings report at the end of January?

Does anyone know what the "discrepancies" consist of?

Is there an easy way to see which pictures sold and when?
I belong to BS, SS, DS and 123rf. It is very easy to see what sold, when, and the amount sold for. I only have thirty dl's on IS so I can figure it out, but there has to be a more efficient way.

SS shows which keywords resulted in a sale. Do any of the other sites offer this info? Thank you in advance for your help!
