Cameras / Lenses / dust inside the lens
« on: December 28, 2012, 20:09 »
Hi all:
I have a very annoying issue with my Tamron lens (AF 28-300 mm) it appears that somehow dust or dirty got into the lens and has accumulated smack in the middle at the front part of the lens giving me nasty cloudy spots on every picture.  Of course, I notice this on a road trip where I only brought this lens.
Any ideas how/why this could have been happening and more importantly, whether there is anything I could do about it?
Thanks so much for any help and advice.

Hi everybody:

long time no speak ...
Anyway, I am planning a trip to Melbourne in late Feb early March and have some time on my hand that I could use for photography.  I was wondering whether anybody knew of any courses, classes, meet-ups.  I am interested in anything for a 1-day workshop to informal gatherings for a photo walk.

I would really appreciate and ideas and suggestions you might have.
Thanks,
Tina

I want to send a couple of links to my portfolios to somebody but somehow can't figure out how to do this for shutterstock, istock, and fotolia.  :-[
I looked around on the site and searched this forum but nada.
Any advice?

Thanks!

Off Topic / Camera for my kid
« on: February 03, 2009, 02:28 »
My 4 year-old wants my camera and he sure can't have it.  So I decided to get him his own, kid-friendly camera but so far I haven't seen anything I like.
It should have more than the 2 megapix that seem to be standard for kids.  It also doesn't have to have any Disney characters printed on it and certainly Hannah Montana is not required.  Since he bangs it into everything all the time I would prefer a camera that has a smallish zoom lense, that is one that doesn't extend too far out and it should be light.  Oh, and I don't want to spend a lot of money as he will bang it into everything ...

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Tina

Off Topic / Selling rights to a picture
« on: January 09, 2009, 23:35 »
Somebody wants to buy the rights to one of my pictures.  It's not one I have on any microstock or is otherwise making me any money.  I like it but I don't love it.
I have absolutely no idea what I should ask!
Any and all experience and datapoints would be helpful.

Thanks

Off Topic / Palm Springs Photo Festival
« on: December 18, 2008, 13:19 »
I am toying with the idea to invest part of this years (meager) microstock earning to attend this festival.  Has anybody any experience with it?  Is it worth it, especially the workshops?
Thanks for your input!

Off Topic / Really good lab
« on: November 24, 2008, 16:19 »
I have a question for all of you living in the SF Bay Area.  For a photo competition (TPOTY) I entered I need to now submit actual prints of the 4 pictures I sent in (never thought it would come to that ;-)
I don't have all that much time so I'd like to have them printed where I live (it is also a bit of a control thing).  Does anybody have a suggestion for a really good lab to have these prints made from digital.

Thanks

Shutterstock.com / Sales disappeared
« on: August 28, 2008, 14:32 »
I just refreshed my shutterstock account page and in front on my very eyes all sales after August 18 disappeared (including compensation for the referals).  Big fat zeros for all days starting August 19.  I closed the tab, opened a new one, still the same.  Pictures I uploaded are still there, just the money is gone.  Anybody else experiencing the same?

General Stock Discussion / Keywords
« on: August 05, 2008, 23:37 »
I just looked at SS top 100 keyword searches - something I should have done more frequently as it turns out - and was surprised to find a large number of Spanish search terms among the top ones, among them corazones (#1), flores (#8), manos (#9),  rosa (#10) past week, similar positions over the past month.
I am happy to keyword in Spanish, it will help with my efforts to study the language but I am still confused, will the search term "flores" find my flowers or do I have to actually add the keyword "flores" (as those pictures I spot-checked did).  If not, I really wish I would have know earlier.
What do you say?

Thanks,

Tina

General Stock Discussion / What to do with travel pics
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:48 »
I am traveling for an extended period of time and have taken bunches of pictures (needless to say) everywhere I went (currently southern India).  None of the people pictures have a MR and so I was wondering what to do with them - if anything - with regards to microstock.  Is it worth my time and the effort to upload them as editorial only and if so where?  I have tried with a few that I took during carneval in Mexico and they haven't exactly sold like crazy (very seasonal topic, I realize, but still).

Any suggestions, experiences to share.

Thanks,

Tina

StockXpert.com / FTP uploads
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:22 »
I'd like to have a quick clarification from you guys who have been on StockXpert longer than I have.  I want to use FTP upload now that I finally set it up but it seems to me that every time I upload a picture with a person I need to upload the model release(s) anew and what is even worse, I have to upload it/them so the name matches the name of the picture.  Are they honestly expecting me to rename my model release 30 times for 30 pictures or am I not getting it? -  ???

Thanks,

Tina

Dreamstime.com / can't upload
« on: December 31, 2007, 17:13 »
anybody else having problems uploading.  I can't either upload a new MR or resubmit the files I wanted to resubmit because of issues with the MR.
After I select the approproate document in the Browse box the whole thing just relaods without the information.  I have "played " this enough times now to know that it's not me making a mistake.
Anybody else?

Thanks,

Tina

General Stock Discussion / How many in a series?
« on: December 01, 2007, 02:24 »
I just did a photo shoot with a adorable 3 year old girl and have tons of cute pictures of her as angel, in her princess dress, ...  I want to upload them all - but I wonder how many should I really upload?  What the "recommended series size"? Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Tina

Adobe Stock / Different Fotolia payout in different countries?
« on: November 23, 2007, 12:25 »
Do I get this right:  I am on the US version of Fotolia and am making 35% of whatever I sell in US Dollars .  If I were to sell through the British website I would make the same percentage of the same amount of money but in British Pounds or if I were on the German website I would make the same in Euros.
I hate to point out the obvious but the BP is twice as much as the Dollar and the Euro almost 1.5 times as much as the Dollar.  So why wouldn't I sell through one of the other sites (okay, it would suck to have to translate everything into German but that isn't the case for the British webpage and moreover most of my sales seem to come from Europe anyway).

Am I missing something?

Off Topic / Help with asome quick event photography tips, please
« on: November 07, 2007, 20:09 »
Quite surprisingly I am shooting a Diwali event tomorrow (learned about it today).  It's sort of inofficial and I am not being paid for it but I would still like to do a good job (obviously).  It's indoors and I don't know the location.  I'll pack my Speedlight, my 85 mm f1/8 and my IS long lense and could use a few good hints, tips and tricks for the more experienced among you.
Thanks,

Tina

I have been on Shutterstock since mid-April of this year and am very happy overall with my experience there (and my dlds).  My near-term goal is to have a reliable 1000 downloads per month (now its mote like 350).  Could you guys take a look at my portfolio and suggest ways to achieve that (beside the obvious - need more pictures.  I just had two really good photo shoots but am uploading slowly to keep the momentum)?

Thanks gals and guys.

Dreamstime.com / That whole Model release business ...
« on: October 23, 2007, 18:44 »
.. at Dreamstime is driving me insane.  Try as I may, they are never good enough.  Like I upload 4 pics of the same model, one gets approved, three rejected because of MR issues.   ???

I was at a point were I was going to delete all of them and then start fresh but, guess what, that isn't possible (the service guys told me something about possible misuse - how can I misuse my own portfolio??).  They'd have to do it and that just didn't sound like it was ever going to happen.  As always service is uniquely unhelpful.

Just venting ...

Off Topic / Photo permit in India
« on: August 20, 2007, 23:12 »
Hi:  can somebody help me with this question:  I am planning a trip to India next year and read somewhere that a photo permit is required to photograph (especially with tripod).  Does anybody have any experience with that and knows the procedures (where, what, how long and how much!)

Thanks!

Cameras / Lenses / need new lense (ok, want new lense)
« on: August 18, 2007, 14:10 »
I am in the market for a new tele lense to replace my cheapo Sigma 70-300 mm for use with my new Rebel XTi.  I have been searching but can't make up my mind so I am asking you guys/gals for input.
Here is what I'd like to have: similar range (could be <70 mm and/or >300 mm though).  I'd like to have a macro setting and some type of image stabilization (I am really not an enthusiastic tripod user).  I don't want to get the cheapo models for around $200 bucks but I also can't spend $1000.  I was thinking somewhere in the middle.  I am agnostic as to the brand as long as it is a good lense.
I was looking at the new Tamron AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC.  Would be a nice (almost) all in one lense for my extended travels next year but I am a little reluctant as it is so new.  Anybody has any experience with that lense?

As always, thanks everybody for the input.

iStockPhoto.com / istock is dragging
« on: July 25, 2007, 13:50 »
no dls in days.  I have a small portfolio but I used to sell slowly but steadily.  Now - nothing in days.  I am at 269 or so dls - am I bronze now or not?  Would that make a (tangible) difference to me?  At this rate I surely won't even think about exclusivity.

iStockPhoto.com / Ratings? What, who, why, how?
« on: July 17, 2007, 01:38 »
I am wondering how the ratings/reviews at iStock come about.  I have 92 pics online (yeah, I know, not enough to be taken seriously but I am working on it) and 32  reviews/ratings and I thougth that was pretty cool but I noticed that there are people out there with portfolios of equal size or even smaller with way more reviews. Who rates what?  What roles do the ratings play in the search algorithms.

Thanks for your input.

iStockPhoto.com / New Categories
« on: June 19, 2007, 13:08 »
Nobody has mentioned it yet (I think) so I will:
The new category selection at Istock is sooooo much better than before!  Three categories from a predefined list compared to selecting a random number from a list that I believe contained more than 10,000 entries (I counted them once but forgot the exact number).
Going forward the upload limits will be the issue for me - not the hassle factor with uploading.  Now if disambig.. (can't even remember what it is called) could be made easier .....

Still, I am loving it.

Adobe Stock / fotolia.com vs. fotolia.de
« on: May 31, 2007, 08:08 »
I have a question for you all.  I am sitting here in Germany eager to check my Fotolia account but am unable to do so.  Whenever I type in fotolia.com I get automatically redirected to fotolia.de and my password and username aren't accepted/known there.  I tried going through the link at the bottom of the page that says Fotolia US but the same happens.  I seem to be unable to open fotolia.com while here in Germany.
I tried fotolia Spain fro kicks and that worked.  Any suggestions how to deal with this?

Thanks,

Tina

Off Topic / Signing off
« on: May 01, 2007, 21:41 »
I'll be off for about four weeks. Taking a trip to Austria, Italy and Germany and hopefully returning with stockworthy grandparents and grandchild pictures  ;) and some romantic Tuscan vineyards in evening light type shots.
Any last suggestions for the traveling-with-kid-also-trying-to-take-pictures photographer?

"See" you all in June,

Tina
