FOTOLIA's subscription video sale is ridiculous 85% discount on M size video sale!!

This nonsense got to stop now or I'll delete my entire video collection there.  This is a plain insult!!

Adobe Stock / Re: Still subscription sales for footage at Fotolia?
« on: September 01, 2014, 08:27 »
Hi All,

We have experienced a temporary bug allowing some holders of old monthly subscriptions to download videos from opted out contributors. That is now fixed.

We also remind you that the ability to download M size videos has been recently taken out from all new monthly subscriptions, so these sales should gradually totally disappear as old monthly subscriptions run out.

Thanks,

Mat

OMG, I just got a subscription video M size sales the other day and got only 1.3 credit which is only $2 or so.
If I get this ridiculous cheap sale of my video clips, I'll delete all my video files from FOTOLIA.  This is bad for us contributors.  I already deleted all my video files from 123RF because of similar ridiculous sales.  I actually closed my account there because it's not worth it.

It's ridiculous because I should be making $15 instead of $2 for those M size video sales.  FOTOLIA is giving some rich big corporation an insane discount in expense of us small business individual contributors.  They got to stop this ASAP.  It'll be bad for their business too if all the good footage contributors start deleting video clips from FOTOLIA.

$3,000 is probably about what the best selling photo makes there in a year.

That sounds reasonable.  Nearly $10,000 revenue from 1 photo in 3 or 4 years isn't bad at all.

One picture is not usually really one picture tho.  Usually it will be most successful from a  whole shoot.  That 10.000 should be average in with all photos from the series.

How likely you will shoot a one of 10.000 image.  Needle in a hay stack maybe.

Of course.  Majority of photos I uploaded and got accepted haven't sold at all.

704
BTW, that 'top-selling photo's of the week' page hasn't been updated for a while....note the preponderance of Valentines day images.  ;D

I didn't notice that.  what is that?  Aren't they updating or those are actually selling all year around?  Is it Valentine season in southern hemisphere?

I don't think you should count on income from an image staying constant for 3 or 4 years, especially the top selling image.  It's likely to be duplicated or tastes are likely to change or just the search could change.

True.  Just trying to guestimating the best case.

I don't think a lot of people will reply.

Mine made the same amount in 6 months.

That's spectacular!

I wonder how much those photos make.

Majority of my photos never sold in a year.

My best selling photo made about $1,000 in a year.

That's great!  I hope that the Shutterstock will acquire all the former Getty/iStock clients!
Based on my IS sales recently, I'd guess that's already happened, more or less.

That's great because iStock uploading process is a pain.

Hello,

These higher royalty sales are the result of enterprise agreements with large companies and advertising agencies.  Typically, they work with Shutterstock through negotiated agreements, which can include things like the option for sensitive use (although very few uses would be a sensitive one), additional legal indemnification, extra workflow features, etc., to meet the exact needs of their business.   As a result, they're paying higher fees and contributors receive higher royalties.

We have an increasing number of relationships that come to us through such custom agreements, which result in higher royalties paid out to contributors.   Those customers are typically major publishing houses, major advertising agencies, and Fortune 500 companies around the world (among others).

And what makes the price widely differ in SODs from less than a dollar to over $100?  Anybody knows?

712
It is a licence that allows for sensitive use and the sale is called SOD, they can go at 120 dollar

SOD can also go less then $1?

What's the highest commission on a single sales in SS do you know?  Is it $120?

I had $72 commission on a single photo sales the day before as well.  I hope this is a new trend for me.

713
And how much is the highest you can get from a single photo sale at SS?

714
I'll upload many Asian themed clips if you enable file format other than the jpeg stuff.  I usually have prores422.

715
I wish your new site will be successful and pressure Shutterstock and others to raise the royalty rate from 30% to 40%+.

716
ok, I am going to toss this out (might be way off) for thought. I've noticed a much higher rejection rate from the weekend (Sat/Sun) reviewers than the Weekday (Mon- Fri) reviewers. Might just be me but food for thought ???

That may exactly be why on Shutterstock.

717
Next week the rant will be reversed.

I definitely see a trend in SS for suddenly increasing rejections.

719
Their photo acceptance standard is getting ridiculous these days.  The same exact lighting and you get "Poor Lighting" as the rejection reason.

Sometimes, I get like $98 from single HD sales from Shutterstock.  I don't know if that happens on iStock too.
You can figure out the amount you can get very easily if you want.  Credits x Price per credit x Royalty rate.   1080 files are about 100 credits, the price per credit a buyer pays is around 50 cents to $1.67 with an average of around $1.30 and royalty rates for nonexclusive content is 15-20%.  The range for a nonexclusive would be about $7 to about $33.   Exclusives range from about $12-$85 for 1080 video, the high number is for a Vetta file at 30%, regular files can be up to about $73.  And an EL could be much higher along with mirrored content at Getty if you were exclusive.  I've had more than a few $100 video sales.

How often do you get below $15 for 1080 HD clip on iStock?  I'm not sure if it's worth selling my video clips there.

722
Lowest HD 1080 sale on IS - $17.10 USD

That's not horrible compare to $10.90 I got from 123RF.

723
Couple of days ago I got 1.70$ for small web DL. The script I use showed me 0.10 $ per credit (small web - 17CR - 32$ - regular price). So I`m not surprised.

$1.70 for a video download is way below what you should accept. There simply isn't the high sales volumes in footage to enable those sorts of prices to be profitable. Footage creators should take responsibility and not offer their work for such low prices. That's the only way to keep pricing respectable. $1.70 is absolutely no use to you as a contributor. Meanwhile the buyer gets a steal and the agency makes enough profit to make it worth while.

That's true.  They make us pay for their profit.  Rich gets richer and poor get poorer.

Honestly, I wish they go bankrupt.  Any company that sells us cheap should go bankrupt soon.

725
That's how it is at IS as well.

So, how much is the least amount you get from selling a 1080 full HD clip on iStock?  Do you know?
Prices now are about 98 credits per download, 48 cents is about the lowest possible price per credit (average is around $1.30 though) and the lowest royalty rate is 15% for nonexclusives.  So that comes out to about 7 dollars, the average for the lowest level nonexclusive would be around $20.

Thanks for the info.  That really sucks!  I won't upload any video clips there.
