Microstock News / Re: ShutterStock press pass
« on: June 12, 2007, 20:45 »
Gizeh... I'm gonna have to agree with you there...the idea seems half baked!

I play in the press world 7 days a week.. there are a lot of big problems these days that this idea will not help..but probably hender anyone starting out.  More and more "events" around the world are becoming "commercial" and obtaining "official photographers" ...  making it harder  daily for legitimate news agencies to cover concerts, sports and otherwise.. news worthy events.  It's big business...it really is.  That's what Getty's purchase of WireImage was all about. ..  access to events and content they were kept out of... don't be fooled.

Anyone thinking they are just going to get one of these "press passes" and go to the next Green Day concert or the Masters golf ...  is fooling themselves, if not being misled by SS.

Good luck...  a shooter from a microstock agency taking up a space at a big event... just won't happen.   sorry to be the bearer of bad news. :(

Cheers for now..  JC

General Stock Discussion / Re: keyword spamming?
« on: May 28, 2007, 20:20 »
Hey Lee & Tom,

Thanks for the follow-up and laughs!   Stockxpert ..  were the culprits.  I wrote to them and asked the questions why the cropped image was acceptable yet the full image was considered spam.  ( the crop was minor at best )     After reading the keywording notes by Sharply_Done, If anything.. I should be pulled up for NOT putting enough keywords in!!!!

Boy this is fun... don't worry...I don't take it personally.  Been doing the photo game way to long to understand it.

I'll let you know how I go with the reply from SXpert.

Cheers,  JC

General Stock Discussion / keyword spamming?
« on: May 27, 2007, 23:38 »
Howdy..

Just had the strangest thing...3 pics submitted from one series.  Two of the three had the same exact caption and keywords as one was just a cropped image.    The cropped image was accepted but the other two images were rejected on the grounds of keyword spamming.

I'm not a wordsmith and don't get carried away with the keyword..  literal is what you might call me, but accepting one image and rejecting two is strange.

Or should I just get use to it and carry on?

cheers for now.

Ok... I'm slight confused about the domain name included in the price of admission.  I have my own company, my own website but if I decide to try an alternative... do I then point my domain to Kumaru or come up with something completely new?

How does that work?

Cheers,  JC

Just got this sent through to me...  just wondered if anyone else has seen it and their thoughts?

Great tips!  yingyang0 has done this before and knows skating!  I'll take it one step further.. take the advice of getting down, that's laying down to get shots from a smaller pipe to start.
Then, once you're comfortable..  MOVE CLOSER.  It's one of the more important tips we teach our photographers here...  push yourself, your photography ...and your subjects.  Nothing beats a great in-your-face action shot.

Good luck.  JC

(PS. I wasn't kidding...  loose boards do hurt!)

Chellyar..

It's fall here in the land of OZ..  and as luck would have it the rain held out for the game last night, but came this morning for our Tuesday morning golf!!  I love the challenges sports throw up ... as long as it happens during the day and outside!!  Glad to hear someone else has to put up with crappy light  and the odd good patch.

Thanks Bryan for the compliments...  I have a great body of work here in the office, over 1 million slides (sorry.. it's not a typo!) ... just trying to figure out how best to sort, scan, tag and get online...  anyone looking for a job?

Cheers for now.   JC

G'day Sharply & Chellyar..

Just letting you know about life from the end...  starting professional and now heading to microstock.  As you suggested Sharply..  I specialize in one area of photography (sport/Leisure) and have done so for far too many years to count... but wouldn't trade it for anything.  Having owned and/or operated RM collections for the better part of 25 years, I'm finding playing in the MS has only helped my photography.

Sure... my rate of acceptance isn't as high sometimes as I'd like... you see, my day job has me going out tonight to photograph a rugby game which could yield some great MS images.  Pitch dark and in the rain!!!!!   I don't care how good your cameras are, getting images accepted to any site with the noise I'll get tonight is a real challenge.  ( I'll get a good laugh when the reject note comes in telling me to re-shoot the images in better light or with a better camera.. I shoot with Nikon D2xs ...  any news on a D3 yet?)

Microstock is helping me to look beyond my scope of work and shoot for better quality.. even if sometimes it seems impossible.   I keep think something about teaching an old dog new tricks.. but in the meantime...  I'll take your word for it and keep with what has been a great life for me  for a long time.   Specialize in what you love and understand.

Thanks...  happy flying.

Howdy sbonk...

Unfortunately, not all cameras with the same megapixels are made equally.  I shoot only sport and whislt my cameras handle what I do 9-5 great!  The quality of capturing the pics correctly don't always make the image reviewers very happy...   strange mix really.

So the speed of your camera ( and your lens )is more the issue than the shutterspeed.   1/1000th is more than enough to capture your mates on skateboards.   Best thing to do is have a look through skate mags for ideas on how the pros look at the sport....  I'm not saying copy the work you see, but I think you'll find the photography cutting edge for the sporting industry.

Good luck and watch your ankles in the skate park....  stray boards hurt like hell when they hit you!!!
