I can see this tip coming. Save some images throughout the year, and dump a LOAD in January to instantly boost your rate. Not good for client and not good for comtributors.

These 'tips' will be great, and will say "Worker harder, work faster, work smarter"

Its the usual squeeze.

Well, I can't make any sense of this. Will everyone zero at the beginning of each year (start on 15% and have to rise up the ranks fresh)? that seems insane.

If not, why is my level on the email tied to my downloads so far since January, and not based on my total for last year, which would place me well into the next tier.

I also was wondering that, is January 15% for everyone?

I must say, i've not experienced unusual rejections during all this. Had one rejected, in the last 2 months, and after looking at it closer, i agreed with them.

Also Mar 20 sales were above average for the year. Im expecting April to possibly take a hit, i will know by the 15th  April, as i record averages and totals every 2 weeks, for many years.

Read the same email, not really a surprise. I hope people didn't get caught out with much owing, i was lucky and had a payout in September 2019 and since then nothing much happened. It reminds us all to always take out earnings as soon as you are allowed. Never leave it with another company.

Over the last 10 years of microstock selling, the best CreStock ever did for me in terms of percentage of annual profit was less than 0.5% .

« on: December 22, 2017, 07:07 »
Hi
Can someone else check your nov totals like this...
On your royalities page hovver over your first graph, and it shows a total in $.
Now export your PDF statement and look at the bottom where is says Gross royalities, is it the same or different?
Mines different.

I never have faith in Getty to get figures right. Thier statements are the worst formatted ive ever seen.

Any news from SS on this?
It doesnt seem to be mentioned in SS forums?
If SS had random watermarks, like some other sites, I assume this wouldnt have been an issue?

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia allow derivatives of your work
« on: November 12, 2017, 05:49 »
I read the fine print 9 years ago. Age makes you forget, especially when you are more used to dealing with other licences these days. Thanks for the links. We all need a refresher sometimes.
By derivative I dont mean crop a bit, add a bit of text, change the background color, make it black and white, etc.  I mean completely copy the original photography into a differernt medium, weather its a painting, a digital cartoon style.

So reading it again, its not just EL licence that allows this, Standard licence does too.

Adobe Stock / Fotolia allow derivatives of your work
« on: November 11, 2017, 15:26 »
Did you know Fotolia allow buyers to make a derivative of your work you just sold to them? if you dont know what a derivative is...

What is a derivative work?
A derivative work is a work that is based on (derived from) another work; for example a painting based on a photograph, a collage, a musical work based on an existing piece or samples, a screenplay based on a book.

Personally i call that down right theft.

eww i guess they didnt sell too well or they had too many issues / complaints

accepted now, now wait for images to be accepted. its just a bit long, these type of images should be up the next day, not 4-5 days later. My event promoter wanted to see them online the next day. oh well least the other sites get them online within a day or two at the most.

Shutterstock.com / Press credentials take too long to approve
« on: August 23, 2017, 10:54 »
So far 3 days and still no approval for press credentials for an event. Do SS understand that these type of images need to be up asap?
It is the only site that takes this long, the images are now already for sale on other sites.

Who else submits press creds? whats your experience?

Funny.
As a video contrubutor to sit and watch your disscusion about backup...
Each second of my FS7 4K footage is ~400mb.
I have over 3,000 clips (avarage 30 second per clip).
All in original MXF + delivery PhotoJPEG.
I must admit I thought I found the solution with Amazon Cloud Drive - $60 per year with unlimited storage.
And a week ago Amazon cancalled it. (At least the "unlimited" part of it...)

Guess i'll keep buying those hard drives for now.

I looked at amazon also, but they add a cavet to the unlimited (in the UK) saying 'no professional photographers' etc

HI Paul
thanks for adding to the discussion

Hi
I bet we all battle with backups, are we doing enough, is it robust enough, is it costing too much? should i do more, etc. You can ALWAYS do more, but you gotta live life as well.

Well finally i have a system that works for me, here it is, whats your system?

macbook pro with 500Gb SSD
After a shoot i transfer the images to my mac, and dont delete the cards for a few days.
I run continuous cloud backup, so they start drip feeding to cloud storage straight away. I have about 35Mb download and 8mb upload speeds)
Ill run a local data (my profile) backup twice (ie once a week, or more frequent if needed), on two separate portable hard drives, so they are a copy of each other (to all intense purposes)
I also run timemachine on a 3rd drive once a month.

When i need space on my mac i delete older shoots, knowing they are stored in three places.
When the portable drives get full, ill park those and get two more and start again.

I've never lost images, but i feel i am as robust as i need to be.

Additionally i have a 256Gb storage card in the side of my mac, great additional (always with me) storage and it doesnt stick out.

i see 5th place has 105 downloads, i dont know if 'teaching' is something you should be concentrating on

It's a great shot and the caipirinha tasted great! Drink one sometime, it may loosen you up!

Just because i don't like seeing people taken for a ride, doesn't mean i need 'loosing' up. Heres a drink for you ' Dosa Reality'
Im glad its a 'great shot' .... for you, but just because you said it, doesnt make it true.
I changed a tap once, maybe I should write a book on how to be a successful plumber?
Anyway, good luck.

I published a blog post on my top 5 most downloaded images at SS and why I think they're popular:

EDITED: i see 5th place has 105 downloads, i dont know if 'teaching' is something you should be concentrating on

Just for fun as long as you dont use your SS name on here, how many downloads on average do you get  month on SS?
Are we allowed to say here?ill add mine if we are.

Shutterstock.com / Triple pay notification in May
« on: June 08, 2017, 01:47 »
3rd May got payment notification
4th may got another payment notification for half the amount of 3rd may.
NEVER AN EMAIL SAYING ANY OF THESE WERE INCORRECT

It took Shutterstock 3 weeks and me sending 8 emails to actually send a comprehensive email explaining that the payment notification on the 3rd of may was a mistake.

They decided not to answer half my emails, so i kept sending them the query. When they did answer they just repeated the same party line, basically, "you get paid on the 15th"

Totally useless service wasting my time.

They must have known they sent out incorrect payment information to many people, yet didnt send a follow up email saying "sorry we messed up again" and "please ignore the previous payment notification"
