MicrostockSubmitter / Weird filenames
« on: March 24, 2013, 23:24 »
Not sure if I ever asked this question, but whenever I upload a file, say "vector.eps", it changes the filename into something like: "429_cGVhcl9hbmdyeS5qcGc.eps"

Is it possible to keep the actual filename intact?

123RF / Horribly bad watermark
« on: March 10, 2013, 17:07 »
123RF, your watermark hardly protects our images. One small logo in the middle of the image is not enough, because in some cases, it doesn't even touch the image content.

Please consider extending you watermark to the corners of the image, or create some kind of repeating logo pattern.

Example of bad watermarking:

General - Stock Video / Are 3D or VFX videos selling well?
« on: March 09, 2013, 20:07 »
I'm thinking of producing several abstract 3d and / or visual effects videos, but are these selling well compared to real life footage?

Dreamstime.com / Wrong commission?
« on: February 24, 2013, 09:53 »
I got a 'large' level 3 sale. Cost: 9 credits (2010), it earned me a commission of $3.15.

But the image level 3 window says:

Large size
(5MP - up to 8MP)    13 credits ~
as low as $10.01 per image

What is up with that? Is this the wrong commission or is this one of those 'we give away discounts out of the contributor's pocket'?

Shutterstock.com / Dollar price for 2 enhanced license downloads?
« on: February 07, 2013, 11:02 »
What is the price in dollars for Americans who want to download a "2 enhanced licenses" subscription? It only lists the prices in Euro's for me, which is 159. But I specifically need the dollar price.

Photo Critique / Vector critique request
« on: December 21, 2012, 21:25 »
Was accepted at most agencies, but rejected by Istock and Veer for "lacking commercial value" and "wouldn't appeal to customers"

I want to know why. Do you agree with them? If so, why?

Shutterstock.com / New upload system buggy as hell
« on: November 27, 2012, 06:07 »
So, they came up with a fancy looking 'drag 'n drop' upload device, but things are now so buggy I can't even upload my vectors (eps and jpg at the same time). They keep reappearing in the Submit section, then they contain errors because 'the accompanying jpg was not uploaded', then I must delete them, then they reappear again for submitting.  :o

It used to work perfectly. Don't try to fix what ain't broken, SS!

So I went up from 15% to 16% somewhere in september, but the percentage on my stats page stayed 15% for a while. I also haven't noticed an increase in RPD (however small), and apparently, other contributors haven't either. But the topic has been deleted from the Istock forums and now I have no idea what the latest news is. Lobo promised updates, but nothing so far.

Does anyone know anything about it? Istock is taking ages to respond and is holding back on info.

iStockPhoto.com / iStock down? 503 error
« on: October 24, 2012, 09:06 »
I'm getting a 503 error when trying to access my personal page. Is it maintenance time or is it yet another problem? Anyone else having the same problem?

Someone asked me to do a custom illustration based on one of my stock images. I quoted her an exclusive user license (production price + user license price) but she now asks if there's a non-exclusive option as well, and how much that would cost.

Would it be wise to sell a non-exclusive license of a custom illustration? What would you do?

123RF / 0 dollars for a sold image?
« on: August 26, 2012, 16:37 »

Take a look at the middle one. It's in the list of sold images, but there's no sale and I didn't get paid for it. ???

Does anyone else have the same issue?

Veer / Images online, no views?
« on: August 05, 2012, 16:29 »
Why are there no views AT ALL? Some of my approved images are online for weeks (after a month review time!) but they get no views whatsoever? Does it take another month to make them searchable?

I need some advice on pricing an exclusive user license:

Someone wants to buy an exclusive license for use of a character I originally created for microstock. He wants to use the character as a mascot for his company. Sounds good, although it means I have to delete all images containing the character from all microstock sites. So I have to come up with a price that surpasses the amount of money the images would normally generate in a lifetime.

But how many years is a lifetime? Would you use a revenue-generating period of 30 years as a guideline? Or 20? Or maybe just 10 years, taking into account the possibility that the industry will change?

So let's say the image generates a hypothetical $10 a year. How much would you charge?

iStockPhoto.com / Nice going, Istock...
« on: June 19, 2012, 01:12 »
*sarcasm*

So I searched for 'mouse character' and by chance came across this image:
http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illustration-18309482-cat-and-mouse.php?st=20d94b5

You may have noticed the mouse closely resembles Jerry from the famous duo Tom & Jerry.

A further look into this contributor's portfolio reveals this image:
http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-illustration-18695475-bulldog-and-dachshund.php?st=a3eafb5

Yep, that's awfully similar to Spike the Dog from the same cartoon series.

How in the seven hells did this pass the quality control at Istock? I already sent a ticket to Contributor Relations. I'm not out to screw this contributor, because the rest of his work seems genuine, but I think it's better if these two images are removed from their database.  ;D

I received an e-mail today inviting me to a new vector stocksite called "Image Toons" (http://www.imagetoons.com), run by Chud Tsankov. Another website promising 70% commission and plenty of sales.

The site looks decent, but I'm always a little bit sceptical. Has anyone else received this invitation and what do you think of it? Worth the effort?

Some guy e-mailed me about how he downloaded one of my images from Dreamstime (regular license), to use on packaging for the electronic devices he sells (notebooks, epads). The regular DT license allows up to 500.000 copies, but not use for redistribution. See excerpt below from the Dreamstime Terms of Use:

"What Royalty-Free means is that you pay for the image only once and then you can use it as many times as you like, with just a few restrictions. In other words, there are no license fees except the initial fee and no other royalties to be paid except those included in the initial cost. Note that the maximum number of copies for printed materials is 500,000 copies.
(...) Web templates, greeting cards or postcards especially designed for sale, similar print-on-demand services, canvas, t-shirts, mugs, calendars, postcards, mouse pads or any other items incorporating the image in an essential manner, intended to be sold are considered redistribution (if the image is used in an essential manner). "

My question is, does 'use for packaging' means he needs an extended license, or is it sufficient for him to have a regular license?

Secondly, he wants to trademark this image for his business. He slightly altered the image (which is allowed). He says he doesn't require exclusivity (so I don't have to remove the image). I thought Dreamstime does not allow image use as a logo (at least not without selling the rights). So is it even legally possible for him to use an altered version of my image as a logo?

Please let me know what you think of it, and what YOU would do (or charge him) if you were me.

New Sites - General / Drawshop sales
« on: May 03, 2012, 16:27 »
How are sales going for you nowadays?

And what do you consider the optimal price for your vectors?

So I passed QC with my first batch of images, added keywords and descriptions. Now their status is 'ready', but do I need to tick a checkbox somewhere to make them available for sale, or does that happen automatically?

iStockPhoto.com / Oh no, not again...Istock back to 1979.
« on: January 19, 2012, 20:01 »
Istock is down again. And ofcourse, the dreaded webpage has returned...

English Franais Deutsch Espaol 日本語

Thanks for visiting the 1979 version iStockphoto. Were working to get the site back to the future as quickly as we can. In the meantime, check out the coupon code below and be sure to come back soon.

I just had $12,50 added to my account (which is an unusually high amount, at once, at VS), but I can't seem to figure out which images were downloaded. My account page only shows the latest image sold. But I would like to see a big list of which images were sold, and when, and how much $ I got for each download.

Is there any chance this might get implemented in the near future?

Shutterstock.com / ONE cent short of this month's payout!
« on: November 30, 2011, 19:15 »
At the verge of the new month, it seems I have earned $74,99 at Shutterstock this month. The minimum payout is $75. Can you believe it?

Image Sleuth / Use as logo
« on: November 20, 2011, 08:47 »
Found one of my images on some fishing store window, and being used as some kind of logo.

http://rayburntacklemonkey.com/

Image could have been bought from any major stock site, since it's one of my most popular images. But use as a logo is always prohibited, even with an extended license, am I right?

What would be the best course of action? Try to find out where he bought it from (is that possible?), or personally ask him to remove it (easiest way) or ask for a financial compensation (which I doubt he or she will pay)?

73
Considering the current market position and contributors leaving IS/FT, everyone is happy with how respectful the former underdog SS behaves towards its contributors. And I share in their happiness, but something tells me that one day, SS will become corrupted with greed and starts to screw its own contributors. Think about it, Istock was once what Shutterstock is now, and Istock totally lost control of their contributors and customer traffic, due to mismanagement and greed.

What do you think?

74
I just did an image search on one of my vector illustrations, and I found it was being used as a book cover for some Spanish book. This image sold a number of times on various stocksites, but wasn't downloaded with an extended license. I'm not really sure if that is permitted?

Veer / New subscription system - Are sales picking up?
« on: October 19, 2011, 15:30 »
I was wondering if sales at Veer have been picking up since that subscription system came into effect.

I had a portfolio there 6 months ago, but decided to delete everything because I had zero sales. I might just reupload when sales seem promising.
