Can someone please tell me about 500px Prime?

How do you make an application? What are they looking for? Anything else about their business, would be helpful too.

Thanks :)

Yes, it would be bad - especially in the interim period. But there is also now, since the digital camera became more available, a glut of contributors, and if this economic model is correct then there will be a rationalisation of contributors as well, and eventually only those who can maintain a good income from it will remain.

It is not a pleasant time for all concerned when there is market over-saturation - a very turbulent time. But eventually the market corrects itself and the main players who remain and survive will do well.

Its been a few years since I studied economics, but I remember there are exceptions to the rule, so depending on the market tolerance, sometimes a small group of businesses rather than just one take over the industry, such as in the petrol industry - an oligopoly instead of an monopoly. And maybe we will be left with just the Big 4 stock agencies, if they do the right thing and look after both contributor and customer.

Also, once I took it a step further. This was also for an engagement shoot, the bride to be wore a dress in a a very beautiful dark red color. When I converted it to black and white, I thought it was a shame to lose the red, so in PS with the history brush, I took the dress - just the dress and her matching earrings - back to its original color. This was only for one, the solo head and shoulders shot just of her. It looked wonderful because skin tones look best in b&w, but the color of the dress wasn't lost.

She loved it so much, that they paid me extra to do 6 other shots. So, I think it's best to give them a little extra so they can see the difference.

When I submit photos from a portrait shoot, I select a small handful of the best ones also in B&W, so that the client gets both color and B&W for those. The client is usually very appreciative and sometimes wants more in B&W.

Personally I think most portraits look best in B&W, but it's good to give clients a choice. Often they can't visualise it for themselves, so you have to show them.

So, I don't think micro stock is dead, because there is still a high market demand for it especially with the continuing growth of the internet market. Eg online shopping, information resources, etc.

We are just in the middle of a market correction with too many players in the game. And of course, this goes for contributors as well, until the market corrects and those who do not find it profitable fall away.

I remember studying a business model at university that may explain what is currently happening in the micro stock market.

The model explains that when someone invents new technology or product that consumers want, the market takes off and more and more businesses jump onto the bandwagon, and soon the market becomes over saturated, and eventually this forces down the price. But with the falling prices, eventually the price gets too low for anyone to profit, and the bulk of businesses either go broke, shut down or do something else.

However, if the product is still desirable by the consumers, often one large organisation will dominate and take over the market. The organisation that succeeds will be the one that has the best internal management, systems, etc. For example in the past, IBM with computers, Microsoft with software.

That one organisation will then continue to dominate that market until new technology comes in and takes over. Eg Apple with iPod, iPhone technology.

I think this business model can demonstrate what is happening here with micro stock, and they have hit the top of the market saturation point, and prices have to then naturally decline, until one large organisation remains.

So who will it be? Shutterstock perhaps, if they are smart enough.

I remember reading the announcement by SS regarding this and they said that their ability to provide the fastest and most accurate search results to customers is part of the secret of their success, and if they gave exclusivity to some contributors, their images must take priority in the search, and this would interfere with getting the right image to the right customer. (I hope that makes sense ... please correct me if I am wrong).

So, it is not win-win-win situation for everyone - the customers lose, SS lose and only exclusive contributors win. So its not a good idea all round.

General Photography Discussion / Re: Filters, plugins, etc.

Hi Guys

thank you for excellent thread and comments. I was so impressed with your comments that I just purchased the Nik Collection, however I have a minor problem.

Where do you find the filters? In the little box that comes up within PS, it says: 'to add filters to this view, mark a filter as a favourite by clicking on the star icon next to the filter name within the filter interface".

I tried looking through the website but couldn't find anything - maybe I missed it. So I thought it might be easier asking you.

Thanks :)

You actually have two choices

1. Go up to the very top and click on Filters, then scroll down almost all the way and you'll see Nik Collection - highlight that and you'll get the options.

2. You'll see a little gray box on the right - it might be closed up and just be like a little toolbar line in which case you hit the little box to open it. It will show you all the filters and you double-click on the one you want to use.

You can also access them all from LR. Have fun!

Ah!! Thank you, thank you !! I didn't realise that there was a new item under the PS filters drop down menu - silly me :)

Thank you once again .. and it looks fantastic !! Great plug-in ... thank you again !!

Software / Re: Does anyone here design apps?
« on: June 28, 2014, 19:10 »
Thank you so much - I would like to try that. But I have Adobe CS6 creative suite and Lightroom is not included in that - apparently it is a stand-alone product, and I don't want to have to spend another $100 -$200 on more software.

Is there anything else in CS6 that has the ability to store categories of keywords?

Adobe Bridge.

Thank you so much - I will try that.

For the other suggestion re Excel - I have already entered them into Word, so yesterday I gave them headings and a table of contents - so now just have to click on the hyperlink to find the ones I need. But I am sure excel would work too. I like Word because of the spell check, and Shutterstock is very fussy about spelling.

Thanks to all :)

Windows 8 has apps now - although that would defeat the purpose of mobility, unless I use a laptop - but it would be faster.  I store all my generic often-used keywords in a separate word document, and I have quite a few categories now - and its starting to take longer to scroll through looking for the right set.

Maybe I should design an access database to store them, but not sure how easy it would be to access them. Anyone with any other ideas?

Oh, and spell check too would be an important feature.

Software / Does anyone here design apps?
« on: June 26, 2014, 15:43 »
Does anyone here design apps?  I wish we had an app for keywording and tagging our images, does anyone here or know of anyone who can design one? Or is there anything out there on the market already?

It would be great if we had an app that can store data such as Author, Copyright Notice, Title, Description, and also keep a record of often used keywords under specific Category headings, and then can be easily applied to our images.

I know it is stored in PS or similar - but its still time consuming. I often use the same keywords for similar subjects and keep a separate word document for those. For example, we can then have a category called Christmas, and store all our generic keywords such as: festive, happy holidays, 25 December, etc. Or another for children, or finance, or whatever we often shoot. User defined of course.

I wouldn't then feel chained to my computer all day, and could sit there quietly at night doing my keywording on my iPad while my family watches TV.

Congratulations Kathi !!

Your story is an inspiration to all of us. Especially when you said, after reading the article you didn't think you would make the cut. And you don't shoot people because you don't want to, and you shoot flowers (because you love them, I assume).

Many of us think we have to conform to others opinions of whats good or not, but all we have to do is photograph what we love, like you do. A couple of years ago, I use to do color blocking, not because I saw it anywhere - it wasn't the trend then - but just because I like the way bright colors work together. I used to do backgrounds with red and orange blocks of color, and pink and orange, and crazy things like that. But then I stopped - because it didn't look like anyone else's and I thought maybe it was stupid. And now they say Color Blocking is the new trend - and I could kick myself !

I would love to see your portfolio, if you would like to share with us.

Congratulations again !

Does anyone have or know anything about the new Lytro Illum camera? It doesn't capture pixels, it captures rays of light.

Do you know if it would be acceptable for stock photography? The demo I saw looked amazing.

However, concerned about JPEG quality, artifacts, etc

Thanks, Ethan  :)

Ok, here is a perfect example. Go to the Shutterstock main home page, scroll down a bit and click on the Photos tab. On the left hand side there is a very nice photo of asparagus.

Now, I dare anyone to try to duplicate that photo and get it passed the SS reviewers now.   I can almost guarantee that it will be refused for a) poor lighting (shadows) and/or b) cropping.

Something happened to the review system a few months ago. What used to go though approved before, will more than likely be rejected now. Everything is taken too literally. That sweet little asparagus photo would not exist there today, if left up to the current review system.

Oops, this last post was to PixelBytes - I am newly registered here and still learning how to post.

Oh, I forgot to say, to conform to Shutterstock's severe review standards, a photographer has to compromise their artistic work. SS review standards will only produce bland, overexposed white background stock.  And that is behind the current image trends ... if they are not careful, and keep insisting on this criteria for stock, they will eventually lose the number one position.

I hear what you are saying, and to a certain extent I agree. But do we really need them? I think we should question that. I earn an average of $300 to $500 per month from SS, more from the others combined. I can earn more than $300 A WEEK from doing something else, however I chose this job because I love photography. So, in reality I don't really need them.

They need us because they need a constant supply of top selling fresh new stock all the time to satisfy their customers. But if its not fresh or just plain bland and uninteresting stock, the customers will go elsewhere. And their top photographers who are getting angry over this, will eventually go elsewhere. Let the others get the fresh, new images, and see where the customers go then.

I am pleased that Scott has replied, but I must admit I felt a bit deflated by his response. I don't think he has added a real long term solution for anyone, except to keep resubmitting and writing to support. I for one don't have the time to do that.

I personally think Shutterstock's review criteria is far too severe - after all it is only MICROSTOCK ! The dollar-a-download stuff. And some of the things such as wb or cropping is ridiculous. Shadows? every photo has shadows. Anyone can pick faults in a photo if they try hard enough, and that's what the reviewers seem to be doing nowadays: looking for reasons to fail an image, not to approve. Big difference there.

I for one, am just going to submit, if it fails, then move on and give my work to the other agencies. Shutterstock's loss. :'(
