1800+ clips. About $6000/month.

If these stats were true what would motivate you to broadcast them, it doesn't make any sense, therefore I'm very skeptical

There's definitely people that make that or better. It's possible to make money at stock, but it it takes a lot of work. If you think you can make that kind of money by just shooting stuff in your backyard, it's not going to happen. But if you work hard and try to improve on every shoot, it's possible. Too many people fill their portfolio with a ton of average footage. I don't upload average stuff, every video that I upload, I have done my best to make sure it's the best I could possibly make it and then try to figure out how I can make my next shoot even better.

That is way to low for hd....would of thought a big agency like this would have more consideration.

They sell 4K footage for the same price as HD, so it's every crazier. I'm not sure why anyone would want to upload 4K footage to iStock.

Step through your rendered movie frame by frame and double check that there's no repeating frames. That's the biggest frame rate problem people have.

I didn't understand. And if I found a repeated frame, what should I do?

If you're on a Mac, you can open the movie that you're submitting in the Quicktime Player application. You can use the arrow keys to step frame by frame through your movie and see if you have repeating frames. I'm not sure what programs on the PC allow you to go frame by frame.

If you find repeat frames, then you're doing something wrong in your post processing.

espaws is the only way to upload videos to iStock. Any videos that you've uploaded to espaws should show up in your stock portfolio once they're approved.

I'm exclusive to iStock, so this doesn't effect me at the moment. But since I'm using the standard iStock model release, I'm wondering if there's a better release that I should be using to future-proof myself in case I would like to put my videos on other sites in the future.

I plan to start to make stock videos from the beginning of next year, and feel that I should go straight to 4K.

My 5Dii only does HD I believe, so for 4K I'll have to invest in new equipment.

What equipment do people here use to produce high quality 4K?  What's the best to buy in terms of the best balance of budget and results?

It seems like you should try doing stock footage with your current camera and see how it goes before trying to invest in another camera.

You cannot go to a stock photo agency, buy a photo, then put it up on your own stock photo website and resell. No. Generally that is called redistribution.

But you can go directly to a contributor and buy the copyright for their photos from them. You could then put it up on a stock site to be licensed.

35
Yes.

You can buy the copyright of a photo from someone. Once you own the copyright you can do whatever you want with that photo, including licensing it as stock.

There are people who well buyout the copyrights for someone's stock portfolio and then license the photos themselves.

What would be the best way to find those people? In my opinion it's just a game of numbers. I'm really fast with photo-editing in Lightroom and have some strong sales already. I just don't find that much time to travel/take photos anymore, that's why this idea popped into my head...

I've seen people post on this forum that they were looking to buyout people's portfolios.

I agree with iFlop, the price difference between non-exclusive and exclusive photos doesn't make any sense to me. If people are buying images from micro stock sites, they're really are not worried about if an image is exclusive to one site or not. I've worked at several companies that buy a lot of stock images and the price difference between non-exclusive and exclusive for roughly the same quality of images causes a lot of confusion.

My goodness, it was only announced three days ago. Is it even live yet?

I would guess that he's asking about selling GoPro footage in general on the different stock footage sites.

Another weird thing I noticed: their video platform is apparently incapable of handling MOV PhotoJPEG or MP4 H.264:

Quote
3840x2160, the preferred frame size, will be accepted with the Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) and Apple ProRes 4444 codec only.
4096x2160 will be accepted with Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) codec only.

Name one other agency that limits uploaded 4K files to only 1 specific codec.

iStock limits HD footage to only one codec (photoJPEG), so limiting 4k to one codec is not much of a surprise.

40
Here's my naming structure.

I have a folder with the year. In that I have folders for each shoot, named with the date followed by a shoot name. Then the images are named the same as the folder with a sequence number.

2015 (folder)
    2015-04-20_ShootName (folder)
         2015-04-20_ShootName_####.cr2 (image)

^^ Another weird decision if it is a positive decision and not an occasional bug. (I don't check the bug thread there. Life's too short.

It's definitely a new design. Very slow. No Loupe. But I did find the sort orderit doesn't show up when you're looking at your own portfolio, but does show up on searches.

42
Another thing I couldn't see how to sort by newest first on my own or anyone elses portfolio page. I normally scroll through to see how many of my new photos haven't sold yet.
Unless they've changed that too, and you're on a different iteration than I'm currently seeing (!)

Yup, they seem to be changing the Search Results Pages too. I've also seen a new version a few times todays. It pretty much sucks. No options for changing the sort order. No search options on the left side.

43
Removing the descriptions is completely stupid.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Video Istock submissions
« on: April 14, 2015, 15:18 »
So I started and I'm here again. I made my first ESP submission of a butch of videos. They were accepted and  now (one week passed ) looking for a search (new) the thumbnails and the enlarged view at the file page no working, no view. I mailed reporting but no answer yet. Some experience?

You really should try posting your questions to the actual iStock Forum's Video Page. The people there are really helpful.

45
Hi Tom, it really sounds like you need a new accountant.

But if the requirements and system have changed, then IS needs to update their instructions:

http://www.istockphoto.com/help/sell-stock/training-manuals/video/final-clip-submissions

Start by uploading a low-resolution proxy file. Our inspection team will review the proxy and let you know if we want you to upload the full-resolution clip. See the Digital Video Requirements section for proxy file requirements.

If the proxy file is approved you will receive an e-mail with instructions for submitting the full-resolution clip. Your full-resolution files should be in Quicktime format, compressed with PHOTO JPEG (if file is rendered as a progressive scan) or MJPEG-A/MJPEG-B (if interlaced) with 3:1 compression. Compression should be set to no less than 95%, "High", or "Best". Clips should be 5 - 30 seconds in length. See the Digital Video Requirements section for more full-resolution file requirements.

I don't send them videos but this is terribly confusing? You say, no more proxy files, they say it's required?

Which is it?

Yeah, their video manual is way out of date.

It's never been a requirement to upload proxy video files first. That was just someone people could do if they had a slow internet connection. So they could upload a smaller file first to see if it was going to be approved before uploading the larger, full sized file.

Most of the info in the first two posts are out of date.

You don't need to upload a proxy video, just uploaded the full sized video. I don't think they even except proxy files anymore.

You haven't needed a model release for CG since last summer.

There is a new upload system for video files that is completely different then the uploads for photos. It doesn't suck too bad.

But iStock paying a crazy low rate for video sales and that they are a company run by *insult removed* is correct.

You don't need to be exclusive to contribute videos to iStock. It seems better to contribute to several stock sites and see how it goes before deciding to be exclusive.

« on: December 15, 2014, 14:26 »
I've looked at Dissolve a couple of time and one of the things that turned me off was that there doesn't appear (maybe I'm missing it) a way to change the sort order on searches. On the searches I did as tests, it appears that the results are sorted by age, with huge groups of similar videos by the same contributor all grouped together. It seems that your videos are going to be fairly quickly buried in the search, never to be seen again.

I know that if you're exclusive with iStock your videos are suppose to be mirrored on to the Getty site, but I haven't ever seen anyone posting about being non-exclusive with iStock and uploading videos directly to Getty. Is anyone doing that? Or is Getty's video collection coming from a different group of people than the people uploading to Pond 5 and Shutterstock?
