« on: July 12, 2018, 01:13 »
I got that E-Mail too. My tax form has expired. On my dashboard, at the top, there is a box: "The tax form we have on file from you has expired. Please submit a new tax form."
I would never resubmit the tax form using a link from an E-Mail.

So, if your form expired anyway, what are you waiting for?

You don't have to resubmit the tax form using a link from an E-Mail, you submit a new one on SS tax center page.

My last tax form was dated December 2016 and W-8 form is valid for 3 calendar years.

In the email they say "We are reaching out to notify you about changes to our tax requirements....".

I didn't compare the old and new forms word by word by out of my head I see some changes in the text of the new form itself. I think that is why they are asking for a new one.

In my case 2016+2017+2018 make up three calendar years, so it was due to renew it soon.

Anyway, I submitted a new form and it was approved instantly.

If I remember correctly, they always asked to renew the form much earlier than its expiration date.

Alamy.com / Re: Question about ALAMY/BE & W AGENCY
« on: July 07, 2018, 05:43 »
Indeed, it's disturbing how many in-uses have to be found and notified to Alamy (that's exactly why the "Have you found ..." threads sarted on the forum). Often I've found that 'nudging' Alamy brings the report in quite soon afterwards.  ::)
Well, I was too naive thinking that this is an honest game. If I have to police and nudge Alamy to do the job for what they and distributors take the lions share for, than this place is not for me.
Even the tools stealing from SS are easier to find and report than stolen images from Alamy.

Six months is pretty standard on Alamy, especially with distributors.

Thanks ShadySue, I know that but the download still shows up with an X (unpaid) on the balance (or how they call it)

As I said before, I have no download showing for this image in my account, that is what I find strange.
If I haven't found it, how do I know that they will ever pay for it, at all ?

Alamy.com / Question about ALAMY/BE & W AGENCY
« on: July 05, 2018, 17:02 »
Has anybody heard about ALAMY/BE & W AGENCY?

I've found one of my images on a website watermarked with "ALAMY LIMITED/ BE & W AGENCY" but I have no download reported for the image on Alamy.

I contacted support and they confirmed that BE & W AGENCY is their distributor and they seam to have a yet unreported sale for the image but I should write back to Alamy if I don't see the sale in my account  by 16/09/2018.

The webpage with my image (and others) was published on May  16 and Google search already shows 5 pages of which 4 pages are verbatim copies of the first site (with different URL-s), all in Russian. Pinterest also shows my image as pinned from a Russian site.

So, anyone can use and misuse our images on Alamy and in six month, when the website is history, they will just refund the buyer.

Wait, they don't have to refund him, he never payed for it.

Thanks, I did that and yes, it is closer to 10%. I can't understand why can't they show the right amount, they don't pay taxes every second.

Thanks again.

It's like the Y2K problem, noone ever thought we may need more digits.  8)

Well, would like to check this theory but I have earnings from several month and I don't remember when I last converted my credits. Is there a page where I can see the date of my past conversions, I can't find it?

Go to "contributor area" then to "my sales". Calculate how much you earn before tax for a particular day. Then to "my statistics" and choose "how many credits I earned" and choose the period including the same day. Calculate how much you paid in taxes on that day. If the number is much closer to 10% than to 11%, problem solved. If not, send a message from your interface.

Thanks, I did that and yes, it is closer to 10%. I can't understand why can't they show the right amount, they don't pay taxes every second.

Fotolia does show rounded numbers in its interface. However, when final numbers are shown for an extended period of time, the numbers are supposedly accurate. Which creates a mismatch between what you calculate from interface and their final reported value. It's annoying, but in your case probably just means that they withhold 10%, not more and you will get the correct amount by the end of the month.

Of course there is no 11%, this percent is only for my sales and only this month. It is different for every month.
In the meantime I figured out where the difference comes from, they round up each tax percent at each sale e.g.:
sale $0.34
withholding: $0.04

Yes, they are specifically say on the detail page "withholding 10% = 0.04"

Other agencies, the ones that show "earnings before tax/ after tax" are not doing this.

I knew about the fact that they round up some values but I never realized how much money that means, especially now when there are only US sales, almost no sales from the rest of the world.

« on: June 28, 2018, 06:19 »
I just checked my sales on FT (just for this month) and I noticed that withholding for US sale is higher than it should be.
I have 92% US sales (unfortunately), withholding for my country should be 10% but the stat shows 11% withheld. Translated into money, the withholding is more than taxes would be for my total earnings.

I would like to know if anyone else has this happening.
Thank you.

$199, $449 and $1699 for 2, 5 and 25, respectively.
Thanks for the help, that's great.
May I ask if you see the same numbers (price) in GBP as the ones shown by Niktol in $ ?

I see the same amount in , that is strange.

It's not strange, they just rip European customers off.
Thanks for the answer guys. Yes, they rip European customers off. Not just customers but contributors too. I get my cut in $ whether the image is sold in or $.

They convert from GBP but not from .

After SS's miserable footage pricing the avalanche began, at least these guys give us an opt out.

Just curious how you consider $70 for HD and $180 for 4k to be an "avalanche-like" drop? Did you get $5,000 before?

By the way, a quick look here will give you all the information you need: https://www.123rf.com/products/
Sorry. either I used the wrong wording or you have the habit to understand things differently.
I never said/meant that it is an  "avalanche-like" drop on 123. What I meant is that after SS's much contested sales lately, other agencies will follow.

In fact, this change is in my favor because I always selected the lowest rate before. As Noedelhap said, I find  this a "fair inbetween pricepoint" too.

After SS's miserable footage pricing the avalanche began, at least these guys give us an opt out.

My question(s) is:
- the new pricing is in credits, the old one is in license points. Is 1 credit = 1 license point?
- if so, is 1credit = $1?
Thank you.

Not that it matters much, I'm just curious. Two weeks ago I deleted my last 5 editorials that were pending for 8 month.

PS. bellow are the new prices, excerpt from the email:

Flickr / Re: Flickr sold to SmugMug
« on: May 07, 2018, 16:33 »
I read this topic with mild alarm. I am a long time iStock guy but use Flickr exclusively for non-stock personal use. I did not see any notice but will  investigate. A few years ago I decided to use Flickr to store albums of personal photos  for my own and sharing with family and friends. I find it a great way to organize and share, so much so that I have pretty much gotten out of the habit of putting copies on an external drive like I used to. I has become my repository for all my family and vacation photos, many thousands now.
Maybe I'm being foolish but I figured if Flickr goes down and those photos disappear, the whole world must be ending and it won't matter anyway. Flickr is my "safe" bookcase full of my photos albums I hope will long outlast me.
I do not use Flickr for any storage or sharing of stock photos, but it seems it would be hard for someone to steal them unless you allow them to with the permissions. As I understand it, no-one can even see them unless you choose.
Is this changing with Smug Mug, I guess I better find out.
They sent out several emails to everyone, check your spam folder.

« on: May 04, 2018, 05:50 »
Thanks ShadySue, I know that any image can be used as editorial, that is why I found the specification strange. I thought if they are mentioning it, it must have a reason.

This image was downloaded just now, on May 2 and this will be my first payout after about 2 years. I know about the long clearing time, in case the buyer doesn't return it after using it 6 month. This refund thing is the most unfair thing that can happen to us.
As I see here on the forum, it happens a lot lately.

Thanks again for your answer.

Alamy.com / I have two questions
« on: May 04, 2018, 03:16 »
Would anybody be so kind to help me with two questions regarding sales:

1. For my last sale, on the sale history page I see under details the following text: "Usage: Single company - multiple use editorial only".

I didn't upload the image as editorial.
Q: is the price different when the license is editorial license only?

2. Is payout automatic or I have to request it?

Thank you very much.

That's what really matters to you, which is fine for you and others with the same mindset.
That's not what really matters to everyone else, who may have a living elsewhere and no possible interest in all the hassle which arises from selling stock.
That is true.

Also there are many pro photographers who share samwagner10's point of view, offering their work or part of it for free without likes and comments, not even credit is required.

The number of these free site has grown these last years, I think the latest is https://unsplash.com

Ive been on Flickr for years adding some of my best work that sells very well elsewhere. Almost no activity and I cant tie one sale or even lead to Flickr. There are plenty of photo sharing communities. I realize its not intended for selling but since most of us are here to sell stock I dont see the point for sellers. Anyone get sales or even leads through it?
It's not about sales. Many people are using Flickr as "backup drive", keeping their HR images private in separate sets. I never saw this solution a safe one but many do.

Now imagine all those images landing on SmugMug.

I just have a few small images there and haven't visited Flickr for years but if I don't want to be enrolled to SmugMug automatically, I will have to delete them.

Btw. just got a second email today, no mention of opt out any more, just stay or leave. It made no sense anyway.

I just got this email from Flickr:

Were excited to announce that Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.

.......you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.

If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMugs Terms and Privacy Policy.

So, what are you guys and gals doing?

Watching, I don't use either. Quote from Variety: "With Flickers acquisition by SmugMug, Flickr users have until May 25, 2018, to either accept SmugMugs terms of service and privacy policy or opt out."
That is what Flickr says too in the text I quoted, except there is no opt out really.
I posted this mainly for those who already have a SmugMug account.

Some of you may remember how we ended up with double and triple accounts when Google acquired Youtube, Feedburner, ....

First they say you can opt out but at the end they say that you are either in or out.

From the FAQ: https://www.smugmug.com/together/faq

Just a little reminder:
The last funny story, when they introduced a Flexible Plan (in fact, 1 image for $1, on demand) a lot of people left Depositphotos or deactivated the images. And you know what? They started to block deactivation! You could kick down 5 works, then get error message and delay before you could deactivate the next 5. And all the time they replied that everything is fine and they did not block anything. Then they started to whine to every contributor's e-mail, that Flexible Plan is a temporary solution and they will turn it off soon. Guess what? Plan is still there, for almost two years. And they advertise it every month.
I don't know, why some people are still there, really.
You just said why, because nobody has the time to go there each day and deactivate them in batches of 5.
Even if you deactivate them, that is no guaranty they don't sell them anyway.
