Microstock News / Re: punctum day payout
« on: August 21, 2007, 19:50 »
Oh, and after being an istockphoto member for >5 years now: how I would love to see a press release like this one day!

(everything below this line is fictional)
------------------------------------------------------------
"Veterans Day was inspired by our members, and we gave the money away this day to maximize the bonus paid to our long term contributors, no matter whether exclusive or not. We wanted to find a way to thank our iStockphoto 'veterans' and this is a great way to reward them for their support, for their loyalty, for the years of passion, for turning  iStockphoto from the designer's dirty little secret into the most visited stock imagery site in the world years ago, long before there was any exclusivity program and Getty got a first phone call from BL."  ;D

does this mean that istock sells $100,000 of photos each day?

Nope, that means istock sells $100.000 of exclusive photos each day. Don't forget to add the non-exclusives' sales (AFAIK only ~10 percent of all contributors are exclusive) ...  ;D

try a search with words like

starclub

Oh, a bunch of celebrity shots with no model releases and no idea whether they can be used RF or editorial only. Dangerous ground when used for commercial purposes.

funny animal

Lots of funny animals everywhere.

Quote
gothic

Here I agree, zoonar is delivering more precise results, gothic architecture and gothic styled people as well.

Quote
raccoon

Try "raccoons". :)

And you`ll see the different...  ;D

Saw it two days agon when I did a search for "server". Well, now there are at least 2 findings. :D

And the quality of the pix are much better as in one of the Big 5.

You're kidding.

Quote
There I have to search through aload of rubbish to get an result after an hour. This is different at Zoonar, because they had a better searchtool as the most other sites.

Yeah, do a search for "business" and you'll find the same spam-f*cked mixture of pictures like on any other microsite. No big difference.

But e.g. the very first picture from a search for "computer" (without changing any sort order etc.) is a photo of a USB stick with a clearly visible brand name (LG's "Xstick"). Congratulations, this is actually a novelty on all microstock sites I know. :)

And also funny: if you chose "random" as sort order the order of the search results never changes. That's the most non-randomly random I've ever seen. :)

I opened a photographer's account there yesterday, let's see what Zoonar will bring in the next months. :D

Correct me if I'm wrong.

You are wrong, they do not require exclusivity. :) Funny enough the German version says "no exclusivity demands", the English translation "low exclusivity demands".

But uploaded pictures are bound to Zoonar for at least 6 months, so if you are going to opt-in for DT's "Sell the rights" license it seems as if Zoonar is a no-go because you can't remove your pictures from there within 72 hours.

really good agency, very good searchresult, very good availability, good prices for photografer and fair prices for customers.

And obviously very little sales. Right now there are 6 pictures claiming to be the topsellers - with 2 sales each! OMG. Make 3 sales and you become King of the Zoonar universe! :)

Has anybody noticed a difference in stockxpert sales this week?

Yes, I did indeed.

Mine are double what they usuallly are which I didn't expect in August.

Oh, so it's you who got all my DLs! It's my 8th day in a line with no downloads at all ... Not a single one. Nothing. Total silence. Flatlining. Used to be ~2/day in April, slowed down to ~1.5/day in June/July, and not it's zero for more than a week.

Have they changed the 'Popularity' order recently or is it just ebb and flow working in my favour.

Whatever it is - I totally dislike it. And I've never seen an ebb like this (except BigStock AFAIR, but I've cancelled my account there months ago ...).

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Adlai Stevenson
« on: July 07, 2007, 15:54 »
That's the old "Travis Burt" problem - this was AFAIR the first name mysteriously appearing in the keyword lists of many pictures.

The problem behind this is probably the import of Getty's "controlled vocabulary" dictionary - a list of tags which was created for the purposes of Getty, including tags for editorial shots and therefore containing names of e.g. politicians.

And it's particulary funny that though you are not allowed to use any brand names as keywords on istockphoto there are tons of brand names in the "controlled vocabulary" - happily used by new contributors who are not yet really familiar with istockphoto's rules for keywording ... :D

IMO the idea of the CV system is the best thing since bread in slices (tagging, sorting and correct multilingual translations, unlike the hillarious efforts of automatic translations on other sides), but the implementation and extention of the CV was and is just pain in the a...

Be sneaky sign up with another agency using an alias and upload all the rejects there. I'm pretty sure their are some people who do that. Anoher way of doing it is put all you stock on IS and editorial images on shutterstock.

Are you serious or did you just miss to include some smilies?

Shutterstock.com / Re: render file sizes max. 25 MP
« on: June 05, 2007, 06:21 »
By any accident can it be that you confuse MegaPixel and MegaByte??? Restricting the size to 25MB makes perfect sense to me! SY

That was was also my first thought when I got a rejection for a picture being too big ... But nope, the limit is indeed 25 MP, not MB. :)

Shutterstock.com / render file sizes max. 25 MP
« on: June 04, 2007, 22:21 »
According to this thread the largest allowed file size for renderings, fractals and other computer-generated artwork is now 25 MP - anything bigger than this will be rejected in the future.

In this thread I have tried to explain why it doesn't make sense to me that e.g. uploads of 40 MP files are rejected while SS is selling upsampled files of 50 MP and more; but finally it's Shutterstock's decision what to accept, what to reject and what to sell to their clients.

I've never seen a supersize picture, interpolated to 400% from the original file, so I can't say anything about the quality of these upsampling results. But I sincerely doubt that it will reach the quality of a non-interpolated file - that's why I have always uploaded renderings at the highest resolution I could produce without spending to much time.

I couldn't find any place on Shutterstock where a client is tought that "supersize" means "interpolated" and only "large" means "non-interpolated".

So from now on it seems to be wiser to scale anything down to below 4500x3000 pixels because only then your uploads will be upsampled to supersize 9000x6000 pixels, giving you a bigger chance when a client is comparing file sizes and has the choice between e.g. 6000x4000 (non-interpolated) pixels and 9000x6000 (supersize-interpolated) pixels ... I don't feel very happy with that, but it is what Shutterstock wants so I will play their game.

Thankfully other agencies are happy with being able to offer the original 50+ MP hi-res files so I will go on wasting hours and hours with watching my computer raytracing pictures at insane sizes. :)

Funny enough: I had my DT's best day ever on May 1st when I expected to get no downloads at all! But on May 2nd and 3rd (until now) when I hoped to see sales picking up: nothing. Zero. Flatlining. Strange. :)

General - Top Sites / Re: April earnings
« on: May 01, 2007, 06:05 »
IS: DL -10% / $ -25%
SS: DL -30% / $ -30%
DT: DL -36% / $ -20%
BS: DL +14% / $ +15% (but that makes a plus of $1.50 ...)
StockXpert: first month there, so no percentages, but way better than DT and almost the $ from SS - pretty good result!

In the end, it all comes down to sales. :)

Sorry for digging out my old thread, but: Steve, you were right, and within 26 days I made it to the first payout. That's cool. :)

143
What I meant for the average per picture is: the total number of pictures sold since you join IS divided by the total income you have received from IS for those sold pictures.

Ooops, allright, that would make ~ $0.37 ... but I joined IS when the contributors got $0.05 royalties no matter which size.

My avarage $/DL for this month is about ~$0.63.

144
~$9.50 per picture, calculation based on the number of my currently active pictures. I'm not sure about the amount when calculating with all the deactivated/dollar-binned images, could be ~$8 per picture then ...

Dreamstime.com / Re: 40,000...
« on: April 10, 2007, 18:22 »
Have you seen his average monthly uploads?  That equates to 28.5 images per day.

According to the file numbers of iofoto's portfolio (2037002-20463xx) all pictures in their portfolio where uploaded between ~March 1 and ~March 5-10 ... That's a total of at least 3.500 uploads in ~5-10 days. Not sure about your math, but for me that equals to at least ~350 uploads/day. Wow. So much for the equal limits for everyone. :)

Edit 11-04-2007: Ooops, I didn't know that you can actually upload an unlimited number of files per day via FTP and the limits kick in only when finishing these uploads. Sorry for my misunderstanding, please accept my excuses!

« on: April 03, 2007, 20:41 »
IMO BigStock isn't really worth the effort ... In the beginning I was quite optimistic, but finally I made there as much in a month as I earned within a day or two on other sites. So I keep the portfolio there as it is, requesting a $30 payout every 3 months or so.

I'm glad your experience at StockXpert has been a pleasant one so far.

Yes, actually I like what I've seen so far. I got a little confused about the briefcase thing and the need for moving pictures between folders, but that's nothing to concern - once you get an idea what to do all works pretty well.

I'm furthermore surprised by the quality of the site translations into German, they are far above standard (though I found some minor  mistakes - please don't mind me, my grandpa was a teacher for German language, so it's probably the genes ... :)). And the help system is also outstanding ...

So currently there is just one thing you could do for me: please sell some of my pictures ... :D

Thank you,

I applied on StockXpert last Wednesday and was already wondering whether I will ever receive a mail with either "congratulations" or "sorry" ... So I just checked my account today and realized that my application was already accepted by last Thursday.

Allright, the day was still young, I had some spare time and so I sent my daily maximum of files via FTP. And then the unbelievable happened - all these pictures were approved even before I had a chance to fill the descriptions, keywords etc. :)

Is this normal at StockXpert?
