Adobe Stock / Re: Prints for sale through fotolia?
« on: August 28, 2008, 18:05 »
According to a reply from bilderking in the German forum this usage of pictures from the Fotolia database is based on an agreement and has an explicit OK from CEO Thibaud Elzire who answered bilderking's request with

"... What you want to do exactly fits Business API possibilties. About the licence, you just need to purchase  standart license if you buy an image license just for one time print."

So: yes, according to Fotolia bilderking is allowed to "resell" prints this way, buying a standard licence for every ordered picture.

1 sub-DL so far, worth $0.19 - not a success story I think ... :)

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Active in Forums - Increased DL?
« on: July 17, 2008, 08:35 »
I was wondering if anyone believes in the theory that if you are active in istock forums, you will have increased sales.

I strongly believe in the theory that investing 2 hours in shooting some good photos brings a lot more than investing 2 hours in posting to the forums.

Additionally you could also upload the photos from these 2 hours to other stock sites (as as you are not an IS exclusive of course) which might bring even more royalties since the DLs on other sites do not depend on postings in istockphoto's forums.

but I guess it must be worth the effort if people do.

It sometimes is. Even with only 30% royalty shares you can make 8 or 15 or even more EUR per download, and that's pretty cool. Web sizes don't bring much money, but it sums up.

I actually don't have MS word for Vista other than the trial copy of it, so it may be even more difficult for me.  :-\

Any free text editor with "search and replace" capability will do the trick!

Actually there's just one grammar I "hate" more than that of my mother tongue (German), and that is Russian ... But my deepest respect to all who are learning German as a foreign language. Even we Germans are in a constant struggle against grammar and spelling, so don't be afraid about mistakes!

Dresden  surprised me with river view and
Sans Souci  palace (if my French is not correct, which i rarely so, please pardon me)

Pardon me, but Sanssouci palace and gardens are in Potsdam, near Berlin - did you mean the Pillnitz palace? :)

It is "even better now" I'm from Dresden. :)

Later when you are more into German you should give a try to "Schtonk!" (a hilarious comedy about the true story of the faked Hitler diaries) or "Mein Fhrer" - I always enjoyed learning English from comedies (like "Blackadder", "Fawlty Towers", Monthy Python stuff etc.)!

i really dont understand why you dont want upload anymore...

Because some peple react when they feel treated badly.

i have 8.500 pics online and since the subs startet only 2 sub-sales.. normale sales where great... there is really no reason to stop uploading at fotolia.. this month i upload there ca. 600 pics and 550 are approved... so i like fotolia... and there sales

Good for you. Congratulations. You just missed to tell that you are currently earning ~100 credits a day and decided to go exclusive with them in the future (not that this was of any importance but I've read this for so many times now that I was actually missing it).

But please accept that there actually are people who think and act different, who are concerned when they think their agency acts against them and is moving to the wrong direction.

Cheers,

Good for you. Congratulations. Broken record - you just missed to tell again and again that you are currently earning ~100 credits a day and decided to go exclusive with them in the future.

That's something I don't like on istock. All this "keep F5ing, watch out, certain things will happen sometime bla bla" - IMO it's just childish. I'd so like them to announce things when they are ready and worth to be announced. It's been a pretty long time since somebody told me the truth about Christmas and Santa Claus ...

When in the beginning of 2008 istockphoto was going to squeeze some extra money out of European (and especially British) buyers with a quite annoying subtle change in the pricing scheme and some phantasy-based exchange rates  (therefore almost doubling the costs for some European buyers, flanked by an even more annoying explanation) some small "riots" in their forum finally helped to revert istocks decision after a few days. AFAIR Bruce L. aka bitter himself took the blame for that attempt and wrote an excuse ...

Be careful! If you keep deleting accounts whenever you get pissed,
you will soon find yourself looking for a new hobby.

Yep, and I can tell you which: finding stock agencies where you can earn more in shorter time with less work and a better communication! :)

Believe it or not: during the last 5 months I've applied to 2 local agencies which actually earn me twice the monthly Fotolia amount each out of portfolios half the size of my Fotolia collection (until yesterday of course :)) and *tataaa!* one of them even doing the keywording by themselves.

I will not drop istockphoto and Dreamstime in the closer future (istockphoto because of being there from almost the beginning, Dreamstime because they have a nice tendency upwards), but i.e. I already feel very uncomfortable with Shutterstock which is probably the next in my "Goodbye!" list.

Fotolia was just ripe. Too much effort for too little revenue, and the subscriptions finally triggered the bottom.

This is sorta like the golfers I hear of breaking their clubs when they miss that "Important shot".

Nope, it's more like finding a better golf course when the current one is raising the costs while lowering the service and surrounding the holes with concrete walls.

Well at least on StockXpert 99% of my sub sales are for XL files and vector ...

Of course they are - one must be stupid to not buy the biggest possible size with a size-independent subscription plan ...

Oh, Fotolia Subs will be limited to L size - what a "smart" move not to mention that in the newsletter. And yes: it's 0.23-0.30 per DL, not per Credit. Fotolia's communication is indeed a catastrophe (especially when you a using localized sites - there is no information at all in the German forums ...). But that's not my concern anymore.

Oh, btw I just opted out - out of fotolia totally. Deleted my portfolio there. Making subs-opt-out available for exklusive pics only  is ridiculous, 0.23 credits are too. Bye fotolidiots!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Yuri, I admire you!

The reflection part is actually very easy to do compared to the time it takes to perfect the other aspect.

I think your assistant will hate you for this - artificially creating a real looking reflection of a perspective shot is hell of work, mostly in vain. Simply flipping and shearing a picture doesn't do the trick at all. There are always parts in the reflection which are invisible on the original object and vice versa, and that is what you simply can't simulate (and what immediately caught my attention when looking through the SS's TOP 50). :)

Once again: Please don't mind me starting this thread. And also once again: I really mean it when I say I admire you.

I am sure we all have a few images in our portfolios that aren't representative of our best work.  The difference between my goofs and Yuri's is he makes a fortune off his!   That is something to admire - and maybe envy...?

To those who I confused: Lisa's point is exactly my point too. Except for the envy of course ... :)
