General - Stock Video / Re: H264, again...
« on: December 01, 2015, 13:39 »
It's very different. PJPEG is intra-frame and H.264 is inter-frame. intra-frame codecs are editable, inter-frame's should only be used for delivery, projection.

I don't know if Offset is really working and we don't have any proof that it is or not..

I've been contacted by them early this year as they were working on opening Offset video this summer and still no launching so far..

Thanks for the update. It is interesting for sure.

I'm not on iStock but GI and I see the same trend since few months ago..

It is ridiculous, GI sell videos via subs even cheaper than microstock, it goes as cheap as $4! (I had two of those last month) and at the same time sell the same footage to a non sub client $xxxx... Sometimes I wonder what those clients would think about that if they knew...

Anyway, when we ask GI about those crazy low prices subs, they tell us that they need new competitive offers in order to reach new markets but the only thing that does is turning good old RM sales into subs...

It's not much different than a subscription; the whole idea is to get the real money in upfront 'fees' which contributors never see, then pay royalties on a token  'sale price'.    If you're at an agency and your conscience bothers you for more than a moment, just say that buyers are really paying for search functionality, not imagery.  Eventually I think some agencies will stop using the word "royalty" altogether.

There's nothing we can do except stop giving our work to companies that operate like this.

And what to do when stock companies copy what the others do and all end up doing the same thing?..

It is not a revolution, just an evolution. And 8K is next.

I don't know for America but in France or Korea, I haven't seen a DVD for years. And Blu-ray had no chance to replace it. People just want VOD or streams and those are HD for quite some time ago already.

We have in our neighbourhood a video store. One of those good old fashioned ones that has all the new releases for  you to rent. I like the place and support it when I can. The thing is, it's greatest amount of shelf space is still dedicated to DVDs, not Blu Ray. Maybe it's the cliental or something else. But the far majority don't even bother to rent on BluRay.
The difference between DVD and Blu Ray wasn't enough for most people but 4k takes it to another level.  Blu Ray will lose out, people will probably go from watching DVD's to streaming 4k, if the internet can cope.

I disagree.  The difference between standard and HD is huge.  The current resolution is enough that I can't see the pixels from my couch.  Adding more pixels won't change that.

The difference is as huge as the difference between standard and HD. Just go to any store and it is obvious. HD also looks like **** on my computer's retina screen. It is all about resolution and pixel density.

General Stock Discussion / Re: If you were a buyer
« on: November 24, 2015, 06:58 »
I rarely rarely need stock footage but when I do, my client or I only buy on shutterstock because it is the biggest. We never bother search on another.

Thing I noticed as well is companies or group of people gather to use the same subscription so to quote what a recent client told me "Just tell me whatever you find interesting, whatever the number or if you are going to use it or not, for me it is almost free."

Why shoot HD when you can shoot 4K. It is future proof. All my port is 4K since 2013.

Wait until Shutterstock/Fotolia re-align to $49 and VB, seing that, go down to $29 thinking they cannot compete with the "big boys". And all of this, repeating over and over until prices go to $x.

It happened for photos, it is sure happening for videos.

You really believe that?
That'll cut their profit drastically too.  Shutterstock is doing well and seems totally unaffected by VideoBlocks.  Fotolia has never had any notable video sales in the past anyway.

So, I'll enjoy getting $47/clip royalty on VideoBlocks while you and others get scared away from it.

I believe that because I've seen it. It happened for photos and now for videos. Price battles (+creation of packs, subscriptions), newcomers as VB, with agressive prices, that become popular and contribute to bring the whole market prices down until another one comes out.

I'm scared of it because when I see the stock business now and what it used to be years before, I can see that we are not going to the right direction. I know it's cliche but don't you value your work more than $49?

Getty is just trying to find ways to survive but do not know how.. Which is sad because I work exclusively with them >_>

It looks like macro stock is about to disappear but I cannot see the future in microstock either..

I would have voted sooner but I needed more than 10 posts which I finally obtained with this one!

It took me 7 months...  :-\

They don't accept footages without those documents.

Not even in the US..

Getty now requires drone pilot license and permits for any drone footage...

« on: October 23, 2015, 08:17 »
I joined Getty only few months before. By the end of first month I had less than 10 images with them and one got downloaded. By the end of 3rd month I had around 35 images. Nothing was downloaded in second or third months. Now I have around 50 images. I want to see how they do with these 50 images before uploading anymore. I would like to see how others do with them as well, but no one seems to be voting for them in monthly survey.

Edit: Sorry for being out of the topic, but I don't know the answer.

Are you on Moment or In house?
On GI forum, moment users post the pics they sold and their income every months. You can't be more transparent. For In-houses, there is no info.

93
Red Bull Media House still has its portfolio on Getty Images.. Maybe it's for just "point of view" collection?

You can but I don't know how. I think Getty decides whether a picture goes to ED or not, same way as they do for RF/RM. You may go to Getty contributors forum for more explanation. All categories are covered there.

Hello everybody,

It is my very first post on this forum, actually I did search for stock footage communities or websites and microstockgroup is the only relevant one that came up ;)

I received an invitation from Shutterstock to join their new platform : OFFSET Video which is launching around summer as per their email.

Actually, I did not know about OFFSET Photo but of course Shutterstock claimed that it is a big success. I checked the website and it does not look bad.. I searched on this forum and I could not find posts where actual OFFSET contributors could tell whether it is working for them or not.

Also, I looked on Shutterstock and it seems that they an office in UK beside US and phone numbers in other countries but do they have offices with proper representation, sales and consulting services in all those countries as well?

Thanks!
